i have to get this off my chest.

as a miami grad there will always be a special place in my heart for the U, but right now i am really disappointed in them.

of the 18 schools i applied to across the country, they were the last to send me a rejection letter this morning via email, almost two months behind the next latest school. not having received even an interview invite, i do not think there was a need to withhold the decision letter for so long. it's not like anyone who hadn't been interviewed at this point even had a chance to be on the wait list. The email i did receive this morning was one of the most informal, discourteous rejections i've gotten (and in this season i have gathered many). they did not even have the courtesy to spend 44 cents on postage to mail me an addressed and signed rejection printed on nice paper with formal letterhead. no, they did not even have the courtesy or time to spend the 2 seconds required to begin the letter with "dear (my name here)" or even "dear applicant." there was no dear anything in this at all.

I will not say anything about my credentials. certainly there were many much better applicants than me and i won't spend this time disputing my scores or extracurriculars; that was their job. there's no sense crying over spilt milk, but i have to say that for the amount of time, effort and money spent on this application, the least we deserve is a timely, courteous response. it sucks to have cared so much and held in such high esteem a place that could not more obviously have given a rat's ass about you. of all the schools i applied to, i can't believe this would be the one i felt this way about.

miami, i am really disappointed in your treatment of your medical school applicants. we may not have deserved a spot in class, but everybody deserves some courtesy.

sorry to hear that, it sounds like they could really improve the way they handle rejections and stuff and I wish there was a way to give them feedback.

I think they waited until now because it's after May 15th, and if for some odd reason they had a bunch of people go to other schools, they might still need to hold extra interviews, so they wait until they know their class is full to send out rejections. Still, they can still improve communications to everyone waiting.

maybe the class is full this year already?

No chance. Even at top schools there is movement. I expect significant movement sometime, I just wonder when?! And why there hasn't been any to date?

Maybe they are waiting for the "dust to settle" with the wait lists at other schools and then go through the effort of calling people off the wait list just once rather than each time someone drops from their list.

I'm just speculating though...

Well, I called office last week and asked. They don't over accept, and there are spots to be taken. The data here on sdn supports this. Last year there were 10+ acceptances reported here on sdn after may 15. I just can't figure out what the hold up is!?

Isn't this the first year that they rank the wait list? Maybe they are delayed because they are trying to figure it all out.

I know last year's cycle had the UMMSM@FAU acceptees get dumped into the miami class, yet there still was a decent amount of movement around the 15th. I really hope that this ranking is the cause for the holdup :/

Is anyone looking for a roommate? Does anyone know of any facebook group or forum for finding a roommate in the class? I am 25, moving from LA, have lived in Miami for a few months before, and looking for a roommate on the more relaxed/chill side of things.... Please let me know if you have any suggestion or are interested in possibly living with me. Thanks

Hey there,

Email Marissa Orenstein and she'll add you to our private FB page.. There is a lot of interaction regarding housing there, I'm sure you'll find what you need.. Best of luck!

UMMSM Class of 2015!!:soexcited:

Sorry, I may be missing something here, but I have no idea who she is or how to get a hold of her. Help?

lol!! Sorry about that, I meant to say friend request her on Facebook.. Let her know you're part of the class, once she validates it, she'll add you to the group.. It should have been done automatically, but some have fallen through the cracks..

I am in the Class of 2015 starting this fall. I was wondering if anyone knew:

1. How many hours do students typically spend in required classes/lab per week (for example MWF 8a-4pm, TTh 8a-12pm). I realize lectures are recorded and posted online so it would vary depending on whether attendance was required but perhaps someone can generalize the typical time commitment for required lectures and labs per week. (I'm not a slacker but I have grown accustomed to watching lectures at 2x the speed during undergrad. I can't go back).

2. What are the exam schedules like (ex. every week, at the end of each module, once at the end of the year, etc).

3. How much time do they provide MS2's for Step1 Prep.

Just called the admissions office, the lady I spoke to stated that the class is currently full. I'm disappointed but there is that very slim chance from now until start of class that someone changes their mind.

Saaaad!
Was this for the MD program only or do you know if this is also true for the MD/MPH?

All I know is that I don't have a rejection letter yet. The fat lady hasn't sung yet.

I never interviewed and have not yet received a rejection e-mail. Insight into their admissions office right now I suppose.

Feels like I spent $70+ or whatever the application cost was for some magic tonic water that never got delivered.

1 - In general it's 9-12 (hour lunch) 1-3 or 4 M W F, and 9-12 Tue/Thur. Varies from week to week but not that lecture heavy. Some of that time might be scheduled as small groups rather than lecture. Probably anywhere from 10-20 hours a week of class activities, of which just a few hours might be mandatory.

2 - Every 2 weeks or every 4 weeks depending on the module.

3 - Dedicated time, about 5-6 weeks depending on how you schedule it. Realistically though, we have spring break, 1 week of pbl, 2 weeks of a very chill module (i.e. 2 days of studying total), and then those 5-6 weeks dedicated time. It's more than enough time.

Anyone spoken to the admissions office lately about alternate list movement?

I called a few days ago and I was told that, this year, there has been no movement in the wait list after May 15th.

This is nuts! Even Harvard has waitlist movement. Anyone know whats going on?

down to the wire 🙁 can anyone from the c/o 2015 fb group comment on any recent acceptances?

I was recently accepted into the Post Bacc program at UM-- and although I know they say there is no "linkage" are there any advantages when it comes to acceptance into UM Miller?

Many thanks!🙂

I was on the alternate list for Miami, and got a letter in the mail today saying that they cannot offer me a spot for the incoming class 🙁🙁🙁
