This is not an attempt to inflame the situation further but I think you may want to reassess your initial post. You essentially suggested that because other Top 20 schools are interested in you, UNC should be, as well. Considering most schools have very specific candidate profiles they look for when constructing their classes - and this is especially true of UNC - success at Harvard, for example, does not guarantee an interview invite let alone acceptance at any other school ranked below them.

Additionally, I happened to work with one of the principal faculty members overseeing the re-applicant committee at UNC and I can assure you that getting an interview the second time around is difficult. There is no cutoff for grades/URM/etc and perhaps you didn't improve upon all of the aspects of your application that undermined your success the first time around.

The 'they owe it to me' attitude isn't welcome. North Carolina is one of the best medical schools in the country - they don't just interview anyone/everyone. It sounds like you've been successful this cycle and congrats for that. Perhaps North Carolina just wasn't the right fit for you and vice versa. There's no reason to disparage the university in the process and the 'smug' reception you received was in direct response to the entitled tone with which you started this anti-UNC conversation.

Accepted!! Got the call tonight from my adcom interviewer around 6:30pm ET. Excited beyond belief!! UNC is by far my top choice!

Also, and this may be a dumb question, but I've been trying to find a 'UNC School of Medicine' sweatshirt, and I literally cannot find any. I found shirts, but no sweatshirt. Anybody happen to have an idea where the sweatshirts are at?

I was in the School of Public Health as an undergrad (graduated 2007) and at that time there was still a Health Sciences Bookstore all to itself - up by the School of Nursing. In the old setup, there was an entire room dedicated to health sciences (med, nursing, pharm, pub health, dent) gear of all kinds. So, there were sweaters...but since the move to the main student stores, the choices have decreased markedly.

To answer your question: now, I don't know. They once existed and I'd be surprised if they stopped producing them, altogether. Perhaps they are sold by the student organizations within the SOM? That's how it was handled when I moved on to UCLA.

Lol, you can find the UNC School of Medicine sweatshirts at a couple of the novelty stores on Franklin. There's one caddy-corner from Starbucks I think. Congrats!

Thank you! Yes, it's been long road, but I can't imagine doing anything else but being a doctor, so toughing out the waiting and reapplications is just what I had to do. I'm glad UNC thought it enough b/c it really is an amazing school.

As for the UNC Med paraphernalia, I'm with Cster0905, I couldn't tell you for sure. The campus has changed a lot since I finished undergrad and worked there for 2 years post-undergrad. According to this--https://unchealthcare.org/site/healthpatientcare/visitor/bookstore.html--the Health Affairs Bookstore is still where I remember it (behind/to the side of Carrington Hall (nursing school bldg), as Cster said), so maybe check that out when you're in CH next. Carrington is to your left if you're facing Bondurant, and there's a driveway/service road just along the north side of it. Follow that back along Carrington, and the Health Affairs Bookstore entrance will be in a building on your left, if it's still where I think it is.

Thanks for all the UNC sweatshirt suggestions! Alas, I am in New York, so going down to the caddy near Starbucks is nigh impossible. I'll force my friend at Duke to pick me up one (he already suggested I get a 'Duke > UNC' sweatshirt instead). Whatever, after getting the call, I think the hard part's over.

A more pressing issue, however: I don't think I'm going to do very well this semester at all -- perhaps around a B- average, get my first C or two. Will it matter very much at this point? It's only because I've had so many interviews and other activities this semester. I realize that UNC doesn't even want my transcript until May, but do you think I might get kicked out for doing poorly on a semester after I've been accepted?

I know of students who have had their acceptances rescinded by UNC due to poor final grades at the undergraduate level but I've never heard of it happening at the SOM.

To be quite honest, I don't think it's a problem. They've extended you an offer of admission based on your current qualifications. B-/C may not be great but it is by no means D or F. Those people I've heard of having acceptances revoked failed courses. Furthermore, you have spring semester to do well.

At this point I believe Carolina is just concerned that you complete the degree program you list in your application. I'm sure plenty of top med school admits have a C somewhere on their college transcript (despite the SDN belief that you can't sniff an interview with anything below at B+).

Regarding your sweatshirt, though he may be your 'friend,' never trust a Dookie. Seriously. Once you're a Chapel Hillian, you'll understand. Terrible people (joking...kind of).

Okay, not that I'm anxious or anything, but WTF???

It's already Dec., and I haven't heard anything from UNC; not a secondary, not an invite, not even a rejection.

I'm IS, 1st time applicant. Should I be worried, or does UNC not do the "silent rejection" thing?

When did you submit your complete AMCAS?

I waited on my MCAT (it was reported around 9/20) and I got my interview invite around the last week of October - and that was late. They sent me a letter stating I was supposed to receive an invite several weeks before that.

UNC interviews through Feb and right now it looks as though people are just now starting to fill the second week of Jan - there are definitely plenty of spots remaining.

If you haven't already, find the UNC prompts and get everything written, signed, and scanned so you can turn the secondary around in a day. At this point, I don't think it would hurt to email or call admissions to make sure they have your complete primary in their office. It's one thing if they just haven't screened it yet and another, more serious issue if they don't have your app or they think it's incomplete.

Oh gosh, I completed my AMCAS WAY back in Sept., I think. But I was told that UNC is very sparing with their interview invites for IS people, so I tried to stay patient.

Your suggestion about the prompts is a good one. Any chance you could PM me the prompts, or tell me where/what dates they were mentioned in the forum? (Not lazy, I just hate navigating forum pages. All those posts and emoticons XS...)

You'll find the prompts for the 2011 secondary here - first post. Though it's a thread for the 2009/2010 cycle, I confirmed the prompts with the secondary I was sent.

Regarding UNC's interview policy, yeah, they screen pretty heavily. The admissions folk are very polite compared to many schools I've dealt with and I think confirming with them in a very 'I apologize for bothering you during this busy time, I would appreciate your brief assistance' tone is not going to hurt your chances of getting screened in. Ultimately, and I think you can craft your email/phone call as such, you're protecting your investment and just ensuring you've done everything appropriately on your end to prepare your application for its eventual review.

UNC admissions is not known for their expeditiousness but, from personal experience, their product is amazing and well worth the patience.

I'm OOS and submitted AMCAS 9 22, received acknowledgment within a couple weeks and about two weeks ago received an email from the school apologizing about the wait time, and they had yet to review my application.

Anyone received similar communication?
 
I see from past years that approximately half of 1,000 IS applicants are granted an interview, however I hear this year UNC has reduced the number of IS interview invites. Does anyone know by how much?

My interview is next week, just curious.

That'd be odd since they expanded their class this year by 13 seats... But I guess it could be true.

The North Carolina legislature requires that all undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of North Carolina admit no less than 82% in-state students.

Therefore, the SOM can only offer the new seats to a number of OOS candidates that does not affect the 82% mandate.

According to the website below, in 2008 Carolina ultimately enrolled 27 OOS students in class of 160 (17% OOS, 83% IS).

I questioned it too, that is why I posted. This may just be a rumor passed on from my friend who works at UNC, I was wondering if it was true. Sorry about the confusion. Thanks for calling me out on that divot.

You can go to the interview spread sheet and add all the numbers from September - February to figure out how many they interview this year...lol

I just did this - it took all of 10 minutes.

In terms of the number of interview spots made available in the calender from September - February:
IS: 524
OOS: 129

I don't know how many people are applying to UNC this cycle or what the application vs. interview numbers were last cycle; however, not all of the spaces were used in Sept/Oct/Nov 2010 so I imagine the number of spots made available will, in reality, be quite a bit more than the actual number of interviews granted and scheduled.

I've heard they are expanding the class size but I have not heard anything about how many people they plan to interview and admit (and whether that has been modified from the past).
 
Does UNC accept/consider LOIs or e-mail updates? And if so, how might I go about submitting one?

The Johnny T-Shirt one is good. We also do an annual clothing order run by the MS2 class presidents (I think) that includes sweatshirts among other things.

Congrats on getting in. This place is awesome.

Pre-secondary, I would only submit an update letter. If you have substantive career, academic, or activity changes, then write a letter outlining those. You can reiterate your specific interest in UNC but I would devote maybe one or two sentences to that issue - it needs to be a legit update letter.

In their primary/AMCAS acknowledgment email, they ask that all correspondences be sent to: [email protected]

I'm OOS, I received an invitation for a secondary about 1.5 months ago, and have not heard anything else. This school seems good, so I hope I receive an interview at least.

UNC's Office of Admission is pretty slammed right now and not known for expeditious review.

There are still several (>10) OOS interview days remaining between Jan and Feb.

Edit: For clarification, there remain several interview days that are not fully booked between Jan/Feb.

When one is invited for an interview by UNC, they're given access to the entire interview calendar, which is updated in real time so one can see when people add and days are filled.

Does this pretty much mean that if we didn't get a call last night, and interview was a few weeks ago, that we didn't get accepted?
