I got a letter in the mail today from Utah and figured it must be an acceptance since I didn't think they sent out post-interview rejections or waitlists until March. I was wrong 🙂. Oh well, best of luck to all the rest of you! :luck:

So Sorry to hear I'm out of state as well and just interviewed yesterday. I was wondering did you get an email in regard to research opportunities like the day after interviewing? Best of luck the rest of the way

I interviewed yesterday and got the research email today. Are you OOS or IS? I'm OOS.

hey oos as well any meaning to it or something they send to everyone? i really enjoyed the school definitely would love to attend here hopeful good news. hate the wait tho

So excited to have received an interview invite today! I'm IS, so i'm not exactly sure how much screening i've passed. I heard that if you meet their minimum/average criteria, and are IS, you are guaranteed an interview. Anyone else heard this?
Either way though, I'm totally stoked!!

If you go online and check your status, you will see if you were accepted in the first group of applicants. Admissions Committee must have had a review meeting this week.

I believe the U has sent out a couple of waves of rejections already also.

Where does it show you?

I'm also failing to see where you can see if you were accepted or not. Of course, this probably just means that I was NOT accepted. Curious if that means you were accepted? 👍, but it says you are already a Medical Student, so are you on the Adcom or something? I was under the impression that they weren't giving out acceptances until March?

I was also wondering how do you check this out? I was told as well that March si where everyone would find out. Is it just on the secondary application website? Thanks

Yes, the information you are looking for can be found on the secondary website. The top of the page will read, "You have been accepted to the University of Utah School of Medicine." Hope this helps. I believe the first batch of acceptances went out this afternoon.

Yeah it's true, I just got accepted! Pretty excited, they told me we wouldn't hear back till after the new year. In-state.

You guys mind telling when you interviewed? I don't even know if that's how they do it or not, but it might be interesting to note.

!!!Congrats!!! It seems its the very first invites so far. How were you accepted if i may ask, email? phone call?

Wow so much activity on this thread all of a sudden.
When I interviewed a week ago, they said that the "majority" of people would not be notified of their acceptance until march. But it seems like that isn't necessarily the case?
Anyone know how often their executive committee meets to decide on applicants? I thought my interviews went pretty well so I'm very very excited to hear back from the U. They have an awesome cancer center.

Only top ranked applicants (~top 15%) or so will be given acceptances outright. The rest of the applicants will have to wait till March to hear.

The U uses a special algorithm to determine who they deem as "must haves" and give out those acceptances almost immediately after they are reviewed. This formula also determines the "no chance" people who are rejected almost immediately.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the insight. When you mean immediately you mean after interview or after committee meets, which could be awhile after the interview?

I had the very first interview day of the season. I think it was September 8th or something in that neighborhood. I got a paper letter in the mail today notifying me about the acceptance.

Ms. Doulis mentioned that the adcom judges you according to the following breakdown: 80%interview, 10%MCAT, 10% GPA.

Is that truly how its done? I feel like unless your interview went really poorly, everyone seems to get about the same type of evaluation from your interviewer.. it might also depend on your interviewer's personality and how passionate or effusive they normally are.. (kind of a luck of the draw thing, don't you think?)

Perhaps the reason for them placing such little emphasis on GPA and MCAT at the point of selecting for acceptance is due to GPA and MCAT being heavily selected for in determining whether or not to issue the invitation to interview in the first place?

i think the 80% also takes into accoutn your lor and your activites with the interview. they seem to put alot of emphasis on your activities as a whole applicant

Accepted outright as in, immediately after the admissions committee reviews you and determines you are a top applicant, they offer an acceptance by mailing you and changing your status online within the week (possibly to sway you from considering other schools).

Lccjblu: 80% encompasses all your activities, AMCAS application, secondary application, Letters of Recommendation, and your 2 interviews.

Interviewers, in my opinion, serve to weed out the bad applicants. If you make an interview difficult on them and they are forcing answers out of you, you are very likely going to be rejected. A great interview won't necessarily grant you an admission but it keeps you in contention for one of the seats.

thats great news keeps good spirits up would really love to go here but being oos puts chances against me

If you get an interview from the U and you are OOS, your chances of getting in are probably better than an In-State applicant, post-interview.

That sounds like little more than OOS hopefulness ... hehe😀

I received an acceptance on 12/11 via snail mail. I can answer any questions if anyone has them. Good luck everyone!

In State. I got my AMCAS stuff and secondary in early and interviewed first week of October.

Any Idaho applicants out there following this forum? I interviewed at Utah on November 3rd. No news yet, I'm not expecting anything til March though unfortunately...

ooooo nice looks like acceptances are rolling out are rejections as well? i really am hoping to go here its my last home con on😍

congrats 🙂 was it a nice big fat packet or a deceiving thin envelope

Rejections have been "rolling out" over the last month or two. Yes, the acceptance letter was deceiving thin. When I first picked it up I thought it was a rejection but it turned out to be great news.

O man so I guess the suspense all the way up to opening it up. Congrats btw. Instate or out of state? Any idea which decisions for which interview time periods are being sent out already? Thanks

Accepted today by snail mail. No status update though. I hope that doesn't mean it was a mistake! I interviewed on September 20th. In-state. Good luck to everyone and congrats to those already accepted!!

Why is that? I'm from CA...I thought my kind was a dime a dozen! I'm interviewing this week, and am seriously considering Utah.

All I was saying is that the statement made by Rawls, about OOS having a better chance of being accepted than IS, seemed unfounded. Judging by the numbers in MSAR it seems like the ratios of interviewed:accepted were the same for both IS and OOS.

I am an Idaho applicant, I was invited to interview in the first week of January and my interview is set for Feb 7th, but i'll keep the forum updated on my status

Rejected by snail mail today. OOS - interviewed Nov. 18. Looks like I'll be re-applying this year. Good luck to everyone else!

Fabio, if you dont mind, could you post the ratio for acceptances post interview? Thanks!

Sorry to hear that. Well, the app cycle isn't over yet; hopefully there's still a chance at another school.

How do you think you did on the interviews? Do you think interview performance was a big factor in their decision?

Resident: Applied, 436; Interviewed, 321; Matriculated, 61
Non-resident: Applied 780; Interviewed, 182; Matriculated, 19

and at least 6 of the OOS spots are reserved for Idaho applicants.

So, how did peoples actual interviews compare to interviews received at other schools? I was surprised at the lack of feedback I received from those interviewing me. At other schools my interviewers complemented, agreed with, or expounded at least a few of my answers, however at Utah I received very little, if any interviewer feedback.

I do believe its 8 spots, and I am actually an Idaho resident so I am competing for one of those spots 🙂. However, I am also a Mexican-American applicant, so I also qualify as a URM, so I'm not sure how that is considered - either Idaho or URM spot

I got the impression that beyond the 8 spots for Idaho residents, all other Idaho applicants can still compete for the regular OOS spots. I would also not be surprised if the vast majority of those spots go to URM's. In my interview group the only OOS non-Idaho applicants were URM.
