I used to live on campus, from 2007-2010 to be exact. I lived in Shoreline Ridge, which is about 2 minutes on foot from the Medical School and Hospital. I lived there with my wife and two children.

Anyway, about two years ago the University of Utah HRE (housing and residential education) department decided that Shoreline Ridge would no longer be tolerating families. I say "tolerate" because that's exactly what they did for us from that point on until we all left. They made everything very uncomfortable for us, I assume to encourage us to vacate our apartments. As one family would finish up with their studies, they would be replaced with a single student. No families were allowed to apply for housing in Shoreline Ridge. At this point, there are about 140 apartments and a nice children's playground for single students to enjoy. Families are no longer welcome.

So the only option at this point for married students, or single students with children, is to live in the University Village (east and west), which is about a mile to the south, perched on the far southern edge of campus well away from the medical school and hospital. The Village consists of 40+ year old apartments which have no dishwashers, and no clothes dryer hookups. It's pretty grim compared to Shoreline.

The sad thing is that I know that there is a plan to demolish either the east or west village and not rebuild it, and then demolish the other and replace it with new housing. So there's a chance that if you do live in the Village you'll be evicted at some point to allow for either the demolition or demolition and new construction. The villages are also not off limits to single students, so you'll be competing with them to get an apartment, and if you do get one, it's one that was build over 40 years ago rather than just over a decade ago.

It's actually one of the reasons I didn't apply to the U of U. It's a great program to be sure, and I like the university overall. But it's housing department is extremely unfriendly to married students.

You can probably find a house or basement apartment to rent near campus, but the neighborhoods bordering the U of U are among the very most expensive in SLC (especially the one's near the hospital) so I can't comment on how much you might expect to pay.

Also bear in mind that the Salt Lake Valley has a great public transit system. You can ride the Trax train right to the medical school for free as a U of U student. And you can even ride the commuter train down from the cities north of SLC for free with your student ID.

Although there were some good points made in this post, a lot of this information is incorrect. I have lived in married student housing (east village) for 3 years now and have found it extremely "family friendly."

Saying that the village is "well away" from the medical school and hospital is a bit of a stretch. I often walk to my lab (located at the hospital) and it takes about 15 minutes. Better than that, there are shuttles and busses that can get you there very easily throughout the day.

Dishwashers don't come standard, but they are easy to come by from other families moving out, and they are very cheap and easy to set up. There ARE hookups for washers AND dryers in the apartments. The caveat is you have to have a lower voltage dryer. Once again, they are cheap and easy to come by from families moving out of the village.

There is no getting past the age of the apartments (they are very old), but they are plenty nice enough to live in, especially considering the family-friendly environment you are surrounded by. The rumor about knocking down one of the complexes has been circulating for 10+ years now. Eventually? Probably. Any time soon? Probably not.

Finally, I believe preference is given to Married students. So if you apply a couple of months in advance, you shouldn't have a problem getting an apartment. e.g. I applied in March, and had moved in by May.

Anyways the previous post was right in saying that trax is very convenient and goes right to the hospital, so it would be easy to find an apartment off campus and a convenient commuting route. It would not, however, be as cheap. Student housing is very cheap and includes everything from electric, water, internet (very fast), basic cable, and a great environment. And you won't get much more convenient as far as location.

Just wanted to clear those few things up for those wondering. Always good to have more than one viewpoint.

Hey,

Where are you guys exactly checking status to see if you got accepted? I think I am checking the right place. See pic attached.

I am guessing that the screen changes to "Application Status: Accepted"......?

Thanks!

Its from the main menu on page before the one you showed. It normally reads:

Main Menu

Complete....Schedule Int Form
Complete....Qualifications for Doc..
Complete....Secondary

And when it changes It says:

Incomplete...Acceptance Information (just above the others)

Good Luck Hopefully yours changes soon.

You actually don't have to go that far, but when you log-in, you will be at the page that says "Main Menu" at the top and then has places to click on the following options: "Schedule Interview Form," "Qualifications for Doctor of Medicine Degree," "Driving Directions," and "Secondary materials." These will have "complete" written next to them. If you have been accepted, there will be a new option at the top of that list that says: "Acceptance Information," and it will say "incomplete" next to it.

Sorry, I hope that makes sense. I would post a screen shot, but I don't know how.

Does anybody plan on calling the admissions office on April 1 if they haven't heard yet if they've been rejected or accepted? Has anybody heard of anybody else doing this? Any thoughts?

Has anybody been accepted via mail before being accepted online?

still not status change... I think some people mentioned they were accepted via snail mail and not status page. Since we weren't rejected last week and haven't been accepted I have a feeling we're waitlisted? Does anyone know how their waitlist moves?

def crossing my fingers too! :xf: I really liked the school and the vibe more so than others I've interviewed at. But mdbjork's posts are really worrying me 😏

Several out of state students and in state students have been accepted according to this thread.

At this point, I have a feeling that those that are left are wait listed or getting a rejection letter.

However, it seems as though they released acceptances in batches. The rest of us could just be at the tail end.

I will be calling on the 1st because they said, "If you do not hear from us by the first of April, then give us a call."

That is exactly what happened to me last year, when I was waitlisted. I dont know for sure but from what I have heard is that with the lower number of seats there is little to no movement on the waitlist. There will definitely be some movement at the top of the list but unfortunately there is no way to know where you are on the list.

He is one person, who registered on this site to complain. I plan on talking to the administration to get their side of the story and also talking to a least one student that I know there also. It wont be for a couple weeks as I am too busy at work, but I will post up what I find once I do.

I will most-likely be withdrawing my acceptance if that gives anyone good news. So there will at least be SOME movement of the waitlist. I do want to add, however, it has nothing to do with the negative comments about the U medical school. I know quite a few medical students at the U, from each year (MS1 - MS4) in fact, my brother being one of them. Yes, there are some crappy things that are happening at the U, but mainly it is that they are having mandatory attendance. Other than that, I'm sure you could find people at almost any med school that would complain of being "kept in the dark" from time-to-time or not really agreeing with the curriculum in certain modules or whatever. In the end, if mandatory attendance is a big deal to you, then (and only then) would I seriously REconsider going to the U. Other than that, I don't think I would give it any more thought than I'm sure everyone already will. The U is a great school, and will provide a great education as long as you take advantage of it. Those that are complaining most (I won't mention any names) seem to have an awful lot of time on their hands to peruse SDN. If it's really that bad, then the time would probably be better spent studying. But what do I know? I'm not a Med student. 😉

Anyways, I think that the easy answer to this is that there are pros and cons to ANY medical school. Some people will give more weight to some details than others will. This is true for anybody and for any med school. To blatantly say that you should DEFINITELY reconsider attending the U is just a melodramatic statement from an obviously bitter student.

I say congrats to anybody who got in, that is a fantastic accomplishment! And to those who choose to attend the U, I am SURE they will come away with a great medical education as long as they put in the effort. 🙂

i emailed about my status and they said mine was mailed on mar 28 and i should be getting it soon. so if u havent heard might be something to do

got my letter today, I'm on the "alternate list", IS, mailed March 25.
Does anyone know how the waitlist works at the U? The letter pretty much said they can't tell me anything and that the waitlist is active until August 16.

did your online status change or did they specify how high on the wl you were?

nothing in my online status changed, and they don't say anything about where I am in the list,
all it says is, "your name has been placed on the alternate list and we continue to actively consider your application. It is possible that positions will become available between now and the beginning of classes on August 16. However, we cannot predict when positions will become available, nor can we predict how many candidates on the alternate list will eventually be offered positions."

crap. good luck tho im probabaly gonna end up on that list as well if not a rejection with my letter on the way and no status update

My online status has not changed either.

I called today and my letter went out the 29th.

I am guessing it is a rejection or alternate list letter.

bummer....

so I looked up the Utah's alternate list policies:

"Applicants are accepted from the alternate list in the order that the Admissions Committee ranked them. Your rank is secure throughout the admissions process. Updates to your application will be accepted; however, they will not impact your rank. Your rank is confidential and will not be released.
It is not possible to predict the number of alternate positions that will be available."

So I have no idea where I am in the ranking, how many people are on the alternate list even, and the rank doesn't change based on application updates. I guess people who are accepted have 2 weeks to reserve their spot, so hopefully in the next two weeks if people don't reserve a spot some alternate listers will be accepted:xf:

same here i was told my letter was mailed on the 28th with no status change hopefully still some good news i really want to go here :xf::xf:

I got waitlisted yesterday with no change to online status. Does anybody have any idea how much movement there will be on the waitlist in the next 2 weeks?

Just got my letter today. Waitlisted. Since my letter came on April 1st, that has to mean something else right? 🙄

Rejected!

That is ok, I guess; I am still headed to medical school elsewhere.

Good luck to everybody on the wait list.

got the alternate list letter today...hope there's some OOS movement

got the letter today dated march 28 and got put on the wait list anybody have any insights on that ahhhh need a miracle :xf:

I'm rooting for you! At least it wasn't a rejection. From what i've heard from friends there is usually significant movement for the oos waitlist.

Are there any other current med students that can elaborate on mdbjork's posting?

From what I understand they are all separate wl and you would be in the oos pile and will move up according to what oos students withdraw their acceptance. keep hope alive ha ha

Do you have acceptances to any other schools?

I see I see thanks you've been very informative. Do you happen know a lot of med students at the U that have given you the insight? I definitely feel more hopeful now a friend of mine called and said the wait list was at about 30 people. Unfortunately, this is my only shot :scared:

I know this might be a little premature, but has anybody been accepted off the wait list yet? If so, did you get a phone call, or a letter letting you know you've been accepted?

wait do you mean that only 30 people are on the OOS waitlist?? that's hopeful... how does your friend know?

I read in last years thread that someone was accepted beginning of April off the waitlist so it could be anytime now :xf:

i also read that too i wonder if it was via email or online because it seemed pretty quick if it was by snail mail. but my friend called the office and thats what they told her but since it seems that there are different wl pools i wonder if each wl is at 30 or if they meant the total number of ppl on the wl is 30 because that seems much more hopeful :xf:

I declined my seat this morning via email. I am in state. Hopefully this makes someones day when they get off the wait list. Best of luck.

Hey has the residency match results for this year's graduating class been posted? Just got waitlisted and not sure if its even worth remaining on it...

I was accepted off the wait list. received the wait list letter Friday the 25th, it was dated the 21st. received a criminal background check email Friday the 1st, status online changed yesterday and received the snail mail today. I am an Idaho applicant and will be attending, good luck everyone!

Any other Idaho applicants out there who have an acceptance but might withdraw? Just trying to get a sense for possible alternate list movement.

or oos people???

I don't have a whole lot of friends at Utah SOM (more like 2), but that was the information they told me. I am actually thinking about withdrawing my acceptance, but i'm still trying to decide. I really like the school and would for sure matriculate here if money was not a factor, but having to pay out of state tuition for all 4 years is not appealing. lol

Any other out of state/non-idaho students considering utah over other acceptances? Financial aid told me that cost of attendance would be 70,000+ a year. YIKES!!!!!!!

I'm forgoing in state tuition at Utah to attend a private DO school with an 80,000 cost of attendance. It's all about what you want and where you want to go. The rest will work out.

I thought you said earlier that you didn't even apply to Utah. Foregoing applying to a school where your tuition would be 20,000 is a little different than passing up on an acceptance to that school, but I guess your point was more that you should go to a school based on personal philosophy more that personal finances...

I understand what you mean, but your situation is different. If I was foregoing an MD acceptance for a DO than that's ok, but comparing 70,000 (Utah) to 30,000 (my state school) is a huge disparity. So as of this time i'm trying to get as much information as I can about both schools and make my decision accordingly.

Congrats on your acceptance!!

wow thats pretty killer price tag. where would you withdraw to tho?

I would withdraw to Nuevo Mexico. As of now these are the two places I am considering. I feel extremely fortunate to even be in the position to have to decide.

Yeah, you got my point.

I realized I was very interested in DO early on. And the DO school I'm going to has a unique curriculum that emphasizes community health (to the point of having you rotate in community health centers). I'm deeply committed to the community health movement as well, so in a way I found the perfect school for me. I can't let a few thousand extra a year for tuition get in the way of that. Which was my whole point to jds23!

nice congrats and good luck with the decision 🙂

Been pretty quiet around here for awhile. Hopefully this will cheer somebody up:

I just withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to whoever gets it! 🙂
