Got pooled on 9/3. Complete 8/5. Sorry I'm new to this thread, what exactly is the significance of getting "pooled?" I mean, out of all the applicants, how many are pooled for potential interviews? For those of you who have been invited for an interview, were you pooled first?
the really competitive applicants get an interview right away, or very shortly after getting pooled. It really means that we are on hold. Someone in this thread was floating around a number of ~20% of those pooled ultimately receive an interview.

looks like our interview season got underway today....

Hi guys,
Reporting back from the first day of interviews! I found that it was nice and laid-back, just like everyone said. We started off the morning with coffee at the admissions office - current students kept walking by and asking if we had any questions. Everyone was VERY open and friendly, right from the get-go. Then we went on a tour of the med school and had some info sessions about the school as a whole and financial aid. We had lunch with some current students after the info sessions - we split into small groups and they answered any questions that we had about the program, social life, etc. and also showed us the COMET system, which is their online network that gives them access to lecture notes, podcasts, virtual microscopy, etc. They really emphasized that the school is big on making sure you are able to learn the way you learn best, whether it's audio, visual, hands-on, whatever.
In the afternoon we split into two groups, one of which interviewed first and one of which toured Fletcher-Allen (the teaching hospital) first, then switched. My interview was very casual - my interviewer just asked me a few questions about my AMCAS and then let me ask her questions about the school. Other interviewees had much harder questions, which surprised me considering how relaxed mine was. The hospital is beautiful - very up-to-date AND you don't even have to go outside to get to it from the med school in the middle of winter. 😉
Overall, I thought it was very well done, and I would love to go there! Feel free to ask me any more specific questions about the various parts of the day...

Hey, been coming to this website for a long time now, just registered. This is my first post. I had a few questions for you about the interview and some general questions for anyone who can share some accurate advice.
First, about your interview, do you mind sharing what kind of questions concerning your amcas they asked (were they about your scores or experiences etc)...i have been invited to interview there, and its my first interview and i really wanna rock it. I would love to go to school there.
Secondly, my interview is scheduled for 11/23. I assume, due to the nature of rolling admissions, it is better to interview earlier rather than later. Would it be wise to attempt to reschedule my interview at an earlier date, and if so, would it even be possible? Would it be wise to say I am asking for an earlier date because I want to give myself a better chance at getting into the school to emphasize my great interest for the school and great desire to get in? Or is that being too forward? I know schools want to know that students are [still] interested in attending there (usually after interviews), but is it wrong to say something before? I just really want to get into this school, so I want to do all I can, but I do not want to go too far and screw up any chance I had. I honestly was pleasantly surprised...and when i say pleasantly surprised, I mean ECSTATICly DUMBFOUNDED lol...that I got an interview to this school. It is such a great school, and my numbers were not really very competitive with theirs, so I feel very privileged to get this interview, and I really want to make it count. Which reminds me, say I do well on this interview, I am sure they go back and look at the application as a whole. Are my low scores still going to hurt me even though they have already seen them and invited me for interview? Or will I be ok if I do well enough on my interview? Any help is much appreciated, I feel like such a rookie. Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if UVM has figured out student hosting yet?
To answer your first question - she was mostly asking about some low grades that I had and whether I could explain those at all (I was taking classes at a French university - in French - for my lowest GPA year, and that was all she needed to hear!).
For your second question - I don't think it's necessary to reschedule. UVM is notorious for waitlisting interviewees, particularly early in the process, as they still have a lot of spots to fill as a result of the rolling admissions. The Dean of Admissions, Tiffany Delaney (who is EXTREMELY nice), made sure that we all knew that being waitlisted did not mean we were rejected - rather, it's a function of the fact that they have to save spots for people like you who are interviewing later! Just prepare yourself well for the interview, show your interest in the school, have fun and you'll be fine 🙂

They interview about 600 applicants, accept ~200, and 114-115 end up matriculating.

the school would not have invited you if they saw anything on your pre-interview file that made you inadmissible. in fact, consider that you have received an interview: you are one of the ~20% of those who applied that got one. i'd say they chose you for some pretty good reasons. the fact that you are invited for interview is a sincere demonstration of the school's interest in you; they're making an investment in you. everyone that interviews here has a legitimate chance to become part of the class.
that said, less than 40% of those interviewed receive an invitation to join the class. sometimes your particular outcome is more a function of how your interview went, and sometimes it's a function of how many other great applicants they have relative to the size of the class they're filling.
regardless of your numbers, the interview won't make or break you. so much of whether someone gets into a particular school has to do with factors entirely outside their control: what the school is looking for (always something of a mystery), who else is in the pool of potential acceptees, et al. just be relaxed and enjoy yourself on your interview days, they really are fun.
i wouldn't bother trying to reschedule that November interview; if UVM is one of your top choices, you might even do better to leave it, and hopefully you'll have other interviews in the meantime at schools you're perhaps less interested in. i don't think it's a good idea to interview first at your top choice, people tend to be kinda nerved up their first time 😛
just to clarify: Tiffany Delaney is the Director of Admissions. Dr. Janice Gallant is the Associate Dean for Admissions.
and the point about waitlisting is well made: the admissions process here is very much weighted toward the latter end of the season, as compared to some other places. i believe this is UVM trying to make sure that they are as much as possible admitting only people who are truly excited about being here. thus, nearly everyone is initially waitlisted, and some of us remained on the waitlist for months before being admitted 😉

As for student hosting, the students in charge have not informed us about anything yet. I would assume it would take about 1 or 2 more weeks before anything gets going.

Hi everyone, I'm interviewing on Tuesday, Oct 12 and coming from Cali. Has anyone else found it a bit challenging to find convenient flight schedules to Burlington airport from here? I'm almost considering flying to New York city first and taking a bus from there. Anyone have any better suggestions? Btw, I'm really interested in doing some sight seeing while I'm in Vermont. You think it would be a good idea to fly out on Sunday so I have all of Monday to enjoy the scenery before my interview? Thanks! 🙂

So, I am a Vermonter who went to UVM for undergrad. The Burlington Airport is a really SMALL airport so the flights into VT are not only few but rather pricey as well. If you can find a reasonable flight in, it would be your best bet. The bus from NYC is definitely an option, you should check out taking a train (I think AMTRAK) as well. Both of these options would definitely be cheaper, but most likely would take up the majority, if not all of your day traveling. You could also try flying into some nearby airports, like Manchester, NH--then you wouldn't have as far of a bus/train ride. Another option, which is going to seem a bit crazy, is flying into Montreal, Quebec---its actually the closest airport to Burlington besides the one IN Burlington---and is about 2-2.5 hours away. I have done this before, but the price could be really high, it just depends where your flying from, but since its California it might not be that dramatic compared to your other flights. And, again, you would take a bus or train to Burlington. Overall, it really depends on how much of a factor money plays compared to travel time. But, you should know the trip is definitely WORTH IT!
If you have the time to come in a day early to hang out around Burlington, then I would highly suggest it. I think the city of Burlington is one of the great aspects of UVM. Its definitley small, but theres a lot to do and it is beautiful. You should check out Church Street (lots of shops, cafes, etc); if you like beer there is a local brewery Magic Hat that does a tour and beer tasting; if you like to hike there are a couple places close by, Mt Philo, that are pretty easy but have great views. There are a lot of other things to do, it just depends on what you like and how far you can travel around the Burlington area.
Hopefully this helps you out a little bit! Don't forget to dress warm, its starting to cool off here already!

Wow, thanks so much for the detailed info, brooksie442! I think the best option for me is a direct flight into Burlington airport after all. My plan is to be in Vermont by late evening, so at least I'll have some time to look around town and take in the beautiful sights. Can't wait to come visit!

They don't go in order for interviews....I was complete super early and got an interview recently. Good luck! I checked out your MD apps; there are very few people who deserve to go to medical school as much as you do. You've worked your ass off!

I am also from California, flying into Vermont for the Sep 21st interview. I decided to take a red-eye saturday night, that stops in NY and then continues to Burlington. This way, I have Sunday and Monday to explore (and only paying for 2 nights at a hotel). I am flying out Tuesday after the interview back to California.

I was hoping to gain some insight on attire for my time in Vermont, including for the interview. I am going to be flying in on Friday night, and was hoping to check out what the area was like on a Friday night. Saturday and Sunday, I was planning on checking the city out, then checking the entire school out on Monday (maybe run into someone haha). If anyone has any suggestions for places in or around the town that might be cool to check out, please let me know, and more importantly, let me know WHAT TO WEAR. I am going 11/19-11/24 (interview 11/23), and I have no idea what to expect weather-wise. I am from Southern California, so cold for me is far different than what cold is in Vermont, I'm sure. Also, for the interview, I was hoping to wear a suit, but the website says to wear comfortable shoes. Dress shoes aren't exactly what I would label as comfortable walking shoes, so I am confused as to how most people dress for their interview. Do most guys wear suits, or just dress sort of dressy-casual? This is my first interview, so any suggestions would be very helpful, and much appreciated. Thanks everybody.

Anyone else interviewing on 11/23 by the way? It seems like most people getting interview invites right now are for October. I got my invite on September 7, does 11/23 (2 1/2 months later) sound right? Do they delay the interviews of less competetive candidates? Or are most of you interview-invitees getting your invites 2 months in advance?

It's going to be snowing in mid November. Thus, bring a thick coat, puffy jacket. If you're checking out the city, gloves and hats are good. If you have boots, that'll be even better.
When you come to the interview, you can hang your jacket/coat in the office. As for attire, traditional black suit and dress shoes for men. I believe comfortable shoes are geared toward the women (flats).

well, I interviewed on tuesday and it was even more amazing than I thought. The school is beautiful, the town is beautiful and the people were so amazing. Now just crossing my fingers.

What time are you flying out on Tuesday? I'm interviewing the same day 🙂 but couldn't find any flights Tuesday night (I'm also from CA) so I am flying out Wed morning...
Awesome! I'm flying on United Airlines at 7:06 pm (random time I know). I'm cutting it pretty close to the end of the interview day, but I have to be back at work on Wednesday. The flight goes to Washington Dulles International airport, where I catch another United flight at 9:55 to LAX. I used Orbitz to find my flights 🙂

How long did it take everyone to receive their secondary? It's been almost two weeks for me after my AMCAS was verified and I still haven't gotten the secondary.

It shouldn't be taking that long. I would be proactive and contact the admission office. A simple email stating your circumstance would suffice.

Even though there's a link to the online applicant center on their website and you can actually create an account to log into it, the admissions office must grant you access to the secondary for you to be able to actually see and complete it.
