Hi all, I just withdrew. I feel bad for holding this spot for so long, but it is unbelievably hard to let go of a school. O and I'm IS. Gluck to those on the waitlist.

Just dropped my waitlist spot. Good luck everyone!

Looking forward to meeting my fellow classmates at VCU (MCV) in August!! I just withdrew from my other acceptances elsewhere, and am shopping for housing in Richmond!!

Looking at last year's discussion, it seems like they make offers on the 19th. I don't know about this year...

Last, year May 19th was a Wednesday. All of the acceptance offers went out on Wednesdays as well. So maybe something this Wednesday?

Received an offer today, but withdrew my application. Good luck, somebody is bound to get the spot!

OMG! I got an acceptance offer today!! Totally freaking out! I'm so excited! I will most likely be matriculating here 🙂 Woohoo! :soexcited:

Accepted off of the waitlist...I will be withdrawing and attending George Washington University instead. The school had some excellent facilities and a nice hospital and a pretty diverse class. However, the area the campus seemed pretty shady...but so do a lot of schools'...Couldn't pick VCU over GWU because GW has a lot better rep and is in D.C.!!!

Good luck to all

Class of 2015, George Washington University!!!!

Ha did you honestly just post this in the VCU forum? I'm pretty sure GW's rep of late has been their probation and resignation of their dean among other high ranking administrative people. Have fun paying ridiculous prices for your school and cost of living, free up space for some more sane people.

VCU CLASS OF 2015!!

Vcu class of 2015!!

+1

Those of you who were accepted yesterday, were you guys instate or out of state?

Just maybe we should not take advice from someone who is biased. According to your profile, suferdud, you also got into GW and opted for VCU. Do not fault others for making a decision that you did not make. There is more to choosing a medical school than just financial reasons. For instance, GW is ranked higher in both research and primary care in US news 2011.

That being said I have not gotten into GW but a similar medical school, and got accepted off the waitlist here at VCU.

Can any current medical students comment on this article: http://www.styleweekly.com/ME2/Audie...EC780A9F6AB707

VCU really seem like it's on the decline. Long article but the relevant stuff is toward the end. Sounds like the problems are with the issues of the president of the entire university (Rao), not just medical school and the recent budget cuts from the governor. "Many hope Rao will restore the national reputation of VCU Health System, formerly the Medical College of Virginia, which was once known as one of the top medical colleges in the country."

Also on how competitive VCU is for USMLEs and residency matching.

Everyone (I know) that were accepted yesterday are OOS. Also, I heard the wait list last year moved really slowly due to UVA over-accepting students. Maybe we'll have better luck today or the within the weeks to come.

Sorry did not mean to come off biased/aggressive. Just thought it was kinda rude for a person to post that GW is a better school with a better rep...according to who?

The article you posted about VCU you copy/pasted from another person's post. Did you actually read it? i raise you

Financial trouble, dean "abruptly resigned," and "medical school leaders forced to resign".

I'm not trying to promote either. PLEASE do you own research. Did you actually look at USNEWS and how schools are ranked? Some important factors: residency director ratings. Almost the same for both schools. How about NIH funding...guess who has more? Hint: not GW.

I have no problem with someone picking GW over VCU (and youre right I picked VCU over GW). I'm not going to go into GW thread and rep VCU as a "better school." That was my only issue. Of course, to each his own, pick which school is "better" for you. All I'm tryin to say.

Congratulations AutumnChild and Curleigh!!! See you in August!! I love this school 😍

Hello! Were the only two secondary essays: Why this university and describe lapses in grades? Were there no more?

thank you 🙂

I think those were the only two. Try and have a really good answer for the 'why VCU' question. 🙂

Just withdrew my acceptance...definitely a tough decision...great diversity of opportunity at VCU...

IS female.

Good luck to everyone waiting for an offer!

How in the world is "VCU on the decline"? They're in the process of building a new 158.6 million dollar medical school building. They are increasing the class size over the next few years to 250. On top of that, they are ALWAYS above the natural average for Step 1(one student scored a 270 last year) and they send residents to Hopkins, Yale, Stanford, Mass General, etc., etc. every single year. Doesn't sound like a medical school that is on the decline to me.

If you get accepted off the waitlist, how long do they give you before you lose your spot? More than 1 week?

you get 2 weeks to pay your deposit and fill out a matriculation form. if you don't by then, they rescind your acceptance.

^ Same, I dont think they have gotten to the in-state wait list yet...does this make me too hopeful?

Sorry to contradict but, for the sake of information, I was accepted off the IS wailist last week, and withdrew yesterday...

Anyone else waiting for the post may 15th "big movement"? Or is that not happening, but instead offers are trickling out as people withdraw?

For those of you who recently got accepted off the waitlist, do you mind sharing your stats?

Gonna be honest, I don't think MCV and GW's rep differ too much. Both are mid-tier med schools. The cities of DC and Richmond and the curricula may differ but the reputations are essentially identical.

A large distinction should be made between VCU and MCV. The article mainly talks about VCU. While MCV is technically part of VCU it is over 100 years older. When people from Richmond say "VCU," they tend to mean the undergrad school and sometimes the non-medical graduate schools. VCU (undergrad) has traditionally had a poor reputation nationwide although in the recent decade has shot up in the rankings. MCV has always been a solid school.

MCV was created in the 1830s. It was joined with a professional school (aka community college) 130 years later to create VCU and has essentially been autonomous in everything except name. Even then, almost everyone at MCV calls it MCV and not VCU. The administration is slowly trying to move people to call MCV, VCU but it hasn't stuck.

Also on how competitive VCU is for USMLEs and residency matching.

How you do on the USMLE is going to depend more on how you study for it rather than the school. For the most part MCV outperforms the national average every year. Every school, even harvard will have people who fail and those who score in the 260s. MCV is no different

In terms of residency, MCV does pretty well. I graduated in 2010. I received interviews from a ton of top places including MGH (harvard), BIDMC (harvard), Penn, Yale, UTSW, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview, UNC, UAB and a host of others. I had so many great interviews I even canceled Yale and UVA. I matched to my #1 choice and the #1 program in the country, Johns Hopkins Hospital. I'd say MCV put me in great position for a residency.

i hope the "big movement" is this week....

hey guys! I emailed Dr. Whitehurst-Cook about my placement on the waitlist (3rd time) and she replied!

"You are in a good place right now."

SO HAPPY!!!

Make sure your email is very brief and concise, my last 2 emails were long love letters about MCV.

Now I just have to wait another month or so. hah pretty much used to waiting, turned in my primary on 6.1.10--a year ago!

Dr.WC is definitely reliable. I e-mailed her the day after May 15th and she got back to me that day and said i should expect an acceptance in less than a month. I got an offer the next day! Hope to see u in the fall 🙂

Awesome! Are you instate or out of state? I am instate and received the "sluggish" response from Dr. WC a couple of days ago

I just received a response from Dr. Whitehurst-cook! She said that "the out of state list is moving closer." Does this mean that I have a good chance getting accepted by VCU?

I hope so. 🙂:xf:

MedGirl, I also got a similar response yesterday! "We are getting very close" - but to what?! :xf:
