Congrats to everyone who has already received their interview! I am little bit slower in the process (hopefully not too far behind!) but am getting ready to send my secondary in within the next 3-4 days.
I had a question how I plan on answering the essay question that I would love to get thoughts on. I am a non-trad applicant who graduated in 2008 with a 3.45sci/3.48 overall GPA. I have been working in a healthcare investing role in VC since then. I was a dual degree student (Engineering/Business) and completed 59.5 credits, whereas most students/premeds graduate with about 36 credits (Penn is on a credits system, not hours, i.e. one course is 1 credit, course with lab is 1.5 credits). Through college I didn't really make an attempt to optimize my grades by doing things like taking Orgo the same semester as a set of easier classes, etc. It was a fairly rigorous curriculum and am sure played a part in me doing well on the MCAT (40).
I hope my committee letter will do a good job credibly addressing this but I thought the "Special Experiences" essay would be a good venue to discuss my lower GPA in an effort to have adcoms consider it with a bit of an asterisk. What are thoughts on doing this? Will they already have a good sense of the curriculum based on the AMCAS/Committee letter? Is it better to focus on a different sort of experience right now rather than use the space to "make excuses" for not having as high of a GPA as others.
I am considering answering similar questions from other schools in the same way so, again, I would love to get thoughts here.
Thanks so much and good luck to everybody!
EDIT: If I'm asking in the wrong place, can someone please tell me the right place to ask? Thank you kindly 🙂
