Just sent in an "in the area" email, will keep everyone posted on the success or lack there of. Figured since some people have been successful with this I might give it a shot, and being from CA this would be a huge help since these east coast trip are really expensive.

I just did one of these today too! Hopefully it works out in our favor.
 
is there any way to check what columbia's received already? (aka have they received my recs) or do we just need to wait until they send us the complete email?

also i just wanted to check -- we DO NOT need to mail in our photos anymore?
 
Received invite by email this morning. The days offered were all weekdays next week. I responded by email in three minutes. Got reply in afternoon that all spots that day, and my second choice day, were immediately/already taken.

Lesson: schedule your interview ASAP by phone.

just call and ask, they are very friendly
 
anybody else apply to bassett? i got an email a while ago saying my application was forwarded to the committee...a good sign maybe? still a huge huge longshot
 
I applied to the Bassett program. Long shot too, but haven't even received the complete email yet. So, more waiting....

What's the consensus on the activities question? For me it is still there on the secondary. Should I just leave it blank?

Yes. They will ignore it if you write anything. They decided to toss out the question after they'd finalized the secondary website.

And I'm not trying to trick you -- I'm no gunner, I'm just an engineer. We don't play those games 🙂

Hurry up and submit, though! That IS important!
 
For the first question of the Secondary. We only pick our top 3 collegiate extracurricular activities? Seems like a pointless question to ask when its already been listed in AMCAS. Am I missing something?

Don't write anything. If you really want to make sure you can just call them, I did.

You'll be asked for a photo with your interview confirmation.
 
Do they give emails when an application is marked complete? I see nothing on the website that looks indicative of application status, other than "secondary submitted."
 
Does Columbia have any local clinics or free health clinics that med students can participate in?

IDK, but being where they are, wouldn't that type of thing get BOMBARDED with people? I've seen the desperation at shelters when food was being given out and free healthcare is a lot harder to find than free food.

Yes, we have three. CoSMO is the oldest and largest. It focuses on the uninsured. You just sign up any week and goo. CHMMP ("Champ") focuses on the homeless and is longitudinal. You go and work with the same patients several times a month for all four years (with exceptions for exams, travel, etc). CUHRON focuses on harm reduction medicine. Their clinic involves IV drug users, etc and is twice a month.

Interview Invite!! Yesterday, via email, while in NYC for another interview, ironically 😉 They sensed my presence! lol I'm just so excited, and pleasantly surprised 😀 and for those of you with a sub 35 mcat - it is possible, my friends. Oh, I am in love love LOVE with the idea of going to medical school in NYC, and even more so with the idea of pursuing it at Columbia school of P and S 😍
 
Verified on 9/1 and still haven't received a secondary from here! One of my top schools too... Anyone else still waiting on one? I'm a California applicant but I don't think I would get screened out (3.67 cGPA, 3.5sGPA, 39 MCAT). keeping my fingers crossed.
 
columbia doesn't screen for 2ndaries, to my knowledge, but they were one of the schools that took longer to send out theirs. now it's probably taking esp. long... so just be patient

How does columbia feel about pre-interview update letters?

Not unless it is a new policy, but I would be surprised if only because Columbia has always placed pride on the fact that they evaluate all applications fully (plus, it isn't as if we have 5 essays like some schools).
 
Just sent an in area email. Hopefully I get an interview rather than a rejection!
 
for the columbia-bassett essay it says "What aspect of the Columbia-Bassett Program has the most appeal for you?" -- it says aspect NOT aspects

have you guys been describing the one aspect that most appeals to you or many aspects?
 
I received a complete email on September 14, but when I sign in online, the site still only says "Submitted on" and mentions nothing of my application being complete. Do others have this problem, or does your application page say that you are complete?
 
I don't think anything changes on the application site once you submit.

mine stayed with just the submitted after I got the complete e-mail
 
Just got an interview invite for the Columbia-Bassett program! Also, I grew up in Cooperstown, so if anyone has general questions about the area please feel free to send me a message.
