Does anybody know when the committee will meet to discuss the next round of applicants?

If I had to guess, I would think they'll meet again in a couple weeks. By that time I think they'll get some withdrawals and have a better sense of how many spots they have left to fill.

Did anyone who interviewed on September 30th hear back yet? I wonder if their decisions was based on the first batch of interviews...

Interviewed 9/16, admission committee complete 10/18. Still waiting to hear. They mentioned at interview that they notify acceptances once a month, around the 15th each month.

Yeah I am wondering that as well. I interviewed 9/30 and was admission committee scheduled on 10/6. Are all those being accepted now interviewed before 9/30?

Same. Guess that means we interviewed together. And iirc, we were all IS, and only like the second or third batch of interviews, so our group should be among the earlier acceptances. Hope we hear back soon - according to chasonian, if your status stays like that without hearing anything for a while, it means ur waitlisted :scared:

for those of you who interviewed, if you don't mind me asking, how long was your status "Preliminary Review Completed?" Mine is going on two months now...

Assuming all went well for us, think we are going to be in the second batch of acceptances, considering our ADCOM review was complete after the first round went out. Good luck! :luck::xf:

And to answer the previous poster's question, I was preliminary review complete for two and a half months before my II.

Thanks, good luck to you too.
Do you have any idea around when the next batch will go out?
I hope your not suffering the same level of neuroticism I am.

Well...what the admissions lady said was that once you're status says "Admissions Review Complete" you have been assigned a numerical score. Then whenever they decide to hand out acceptances if you're score falls within the range of the scores of those they want to admit then you will get an acceptance. So if youre hypothetical score is an 87 and the top 20 candidates at that time have scores that are 90+ you won't be accepted. But if the next time they decide to hand out acceptances the top 20 candidates have scores of 85+ then you would fall within that range and be given an acceptance.

So you're not officially on the alternate list until they have filled the class and no more interviews will be given which is in February. At that point in time you are place on the ranked alternate list.

p.s. all the scoring stuff I said above is completely hypothetical. I have no idea what the scores actually are.

oh, ok, I gotcha. I guess that makes me feel a bit better. thanks for the explanation.

Damn, so we gotta wait til mid-November then? alright, let's buckle up.

First of all, congrats to everyone who has been accepted! I remember getting a text last year @ around 12:04 on oct 16th and I about woke up half my apartment complex. 🙂

For those still waiting, hang in there! Applying is a rollercoaster and just keep the faith! Hopefully you all will hear good news soon!

I also wanted to address the quoted post below. FIU definitely looks at the applicant as a whole. You are NOT just numbers to them. I know several people who didn't have stellar MCAT/GPAs , nor are they URMs or whatever else people like to complain about having an easy in. However, they are here, fantastic people, and they're going to make amazing doctors. Don't lose hope. If you were invited for an interview, their interest was peaked. Be yourself, Hit it out of the park! Good luck everyone!!

I think their "score" system is complete nonsense. If you look at mdapplicant and the stats of people who got in, it seems like admissions at FIU is like at any other schools.

Above all, they're looking for high MCAT scores. So even you you do poorly on your interview, as long as you were coherent and as long as you have a really high MCAT score, you got +10 pts. If you fit their diversity quota, that's probably +10 pts out of 100. If you're in-state, +10 pts. I almost feel like the interview didn't matter that much.

From what I've seen in the current cycle, it seems like getting into medical school is very formulaic. If you have 3.85+ GPA and 38+ MCAT score, you'll get into a great/good school as long as you have a passing personality and some token EC's to boot.

Anyone interested in carpooling from Fort Myers to Miami and back for the Nov 14 interview? And while I am on the subject, is sudent hosting available at FIU? If you are driving from Tampa or Orlando or other places close to Fort Myers, that would be nice!

Hey guys, I just interviewed here recently and absolutely loved the school (despite what some people told me that interviewed earlier in the cycle). Many schools have a mission to help the community, but FIU goes above and beyond any school that I know of. Even though the facilities are smaller than some other medical schools, they are still nice, and the clinical experiences there are high quality (med students get a lot more attention since the majority of the hospitals in rotation have no residents 🙂). The student body seemed really happy and cooperative there as well. Hopefully I'll be hearing some good news back in December or so :xf::xf:. GL to those waiting for an invite and those waiting post-interview!

Accepted!! My very first acceptance!! I am so happy!!! This is such an amazing feeling!!! 😀

Yay, class of 2016!!!!

Good luck, everyone!

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 . Did anyone else just get an email? No text or phone call.

Thank you! I interviewed on 9/16.

Oh, and I received only an email, as well. A very nice email, though.

The email was pretty nice... I interviewed on 9/12

Very concerned. Alternate List to UM, and now passed in this round of acceptances at FIU. I really thought I was a strong applicant. Not sure what went wrong.

Accepted via email!!! First acceptance for me as well, what a relief! I interviewed on 9/9 and have been "admission review complete" since the beginning of october, so those of you who haven't heard back yet don't give up hope! Congrats to everyone else in the class of 2016!!

My last status update was 6/28 and I am preliminary review completed......Shouldn't I have heard something by now?

Accepted 🙂 Super excited 🙂 GOOD LUCK EVERYONE STILL WAITING and CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHO GOT IN!

I feel ya. I have better stats than some of the ppl who just got accepted. Hope I get in on the next round. If ppl from later interview dates start getting in before me, then there must have been something about my app they didn't like. My best guess for FIU is the ppl who got in already had much better volunteering/community service experience.

For those of you who got in, any input pn that thought? And if you haven't stated it already, when did you interview?

Interview invite for december 🙂 any tips?
any weird questions or hard ethical questions asked during the interview?

It really depends on who interviewed you. For example, my interviewers were a neurosurgeon from Baptist and a history professor from FIU who was on the schools planning committee... my interview was not so much a conversation as it was rapid fire of questions. I think I was asked every question in the book.

Other people said their interviews were chill and conversational. So it really depends.

Has anyone else been sitting at preliminary review completed for months now? Is this normal?

Hate to be a downer, but probably not. If you've been complete since the summer and haven't heard anything, there's a good chance you were passed over. You could still get one of the later interviews, though it may be for the waitlist. It's still possible, but I wouldn't be checking neurotically for FIU any more. Hopefully you will get some good news from some other places.

Interviewed on 9/30 and my status just changed to Admissions Review Completed on 11/1. I see that everyone who got accepted was from 9/9 to 9/16 so I'm hoping to be in the next round of acceptances and not have been passed over.

I've been on P.R.C since 9/30... really really hoping for an interview invite! anyone here who was complete around the same time and got an interview?

Nothing was really all that weird. Just be yourself, and try to enjoy the conversation.

Know "Why FIU?", "Why medicine?", "Tell me about yourself" (which is vague, so I just started at the beginning 😉), and also be prepared to answer ethical questions, questions regarding experiences observing physicians, questions on research (I happened to have a PhD as one of my interviewers, and was asked to elaborate on multiple research experiences I mentioned in passing), and questions about your leadership abilities. I was not asked about legislation or remedies for our health care system.

:luck:

i was complete on 10/11 and got interview invite 10/21. honestly, i have no clue why my turnaround was so fast. i'm non-trad, have good stats, and a connection to south florida. i think i was just a good match to what they're looking for...and was admittedly extremely shocked with such a fast interview invitation.

I've got a 30 mcat, 4.0 gpa, 2 years experience working as an EMT/Emergency Room Tech, and a lot of volunteer experience (including a medical mission trip). II on 9/9, accepted yesterday. I don't know exactly what they're looking for, but I know it isn't all about mcat and gpa. Don't give up hope though.

For those who are going to be interviewing soon, it really all depends on who you interview with- I didn't have a single ethical question during my interview. Like everyone else is saying, just try to relax and be yourself!

I interviewed on 8/29, my interview went really well, the interviewer even stated that I interviewed well. I missed the Oct 15 batch of acceptances since my status changed to "Admissions Committee Review Completed" on 10/18. I haven't heard anything since then! Starting to get concerned I really would like to hear some good news from this awesome school!

Anyone have any suggestions or thoughts? When might the next acceptances go out?

I submitted a few days after you and have yet to hear. Sucks though because someone below us submitted after we did and already heard 🙁

I interviewed on 10/10. On one hand, I'm very anxious to hear news. On the other, I hope they take a lot of time and really REALLY hope I don't get passed over. FIU news will definitely make or break more than a single day for me. I think I've heard they meet and move forward through several more on the 1st and 15th of each month?

Best of everything to everyone who is waiting for news!

Tell me about it! Hope the patience pays off for both of us! :luck:

If it puts your mind at ease at all, I completed all of my secondaries (14) around the same time (~ first week in October), and FIU is the only school I've received an interview invitation from. That, combined with my 10 day turn around time from complete to interview invite, makes me think that they just really liked me for some reason and hearing back so quickly from them or any other school isn't the norm.

I wouldn't stress if you haven't heard back yet!

I don't know if anyone else has multiple Florida interviews next week -- but it seems I'll be driving up and down 95 quite a bit. My parents live in the Ft. Pierce / St. Lucie area so I will be driving to FAU Thursday --> home --> UCF Friday --> home --> UMiami Monday --> home --> Orlando Airport Tuesday.

If anyone is along the way, please PM me. I have a car and I'd be happy to carpool during any of these legs to save some gas money.

If you don't mind me asking, when were you complete? I haven't heard back from FIU and have been "P.R.C" since mid-October. Just wondering where they were in the review process....

im from illinois so i have the same issue...but you need to explain (and know yourself) what it is about a urban environment ie miami you'd like...of course its not just miami, but being able to frame your desire to attend in from the perspective of treating an urban population is something i'm specifically interested in. hell, you could be into geriatrics with all those retired folks in south florida 🙂

I sent in my secondary on 8/15

Also, idk if this was mentioned, but how many interview invites to they give, and how many acceptances do they expect to give outright, and then in total (with waitlist)?

This is a completely random and unqualified... BUT I was talking to someone yesterday whose sister is an M1 at FIU... she claims that 80% of her class came from the waitlist.

Anyone know if they are meeting on Nov. 15th or handing decisions out around then for late October interviews?

I don't think late October interviews are going to hear back by Nov 15th; they haven't released results for a lot of us who interviewed in late September/early October yet. Also, the Nov 15th date is a release date; I'm pretty sure they've already made a decision on my application for example since it says "Admissions Committee Review Completed" on my dashboard but I won't find out until Nov 15th.

Darn. Thanks for the info!
