No celebrating here. So far no emails or application status updates either though.

Does anyone know the best place in GR (and a relative decent price) to stay? I know the list they gave us ive been looking through it.. Also, im not sure if i want to train it up from chicago, and then cab it from train station to hotel, or should i drive? i know train is about 30 $, but if it snows and i take car i may be screwed, but i save money by taking the the car because i wont need a cab from train, and then from hotel to secchia (as im interviewing in GR) . Anyways any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im interviewing january 19th, maybe someone wants to drive up /split gas with me /and or hotel.. THANKS!

I'm not a travel agent, but GR seems to be very compartmentalized. That is, there are many swanky downtown hotels that won't be cheap, and then there are many chains (from cheap to swanky) on 28th Street, which is a good 15-20 minute drive from Secchia. You can assume no traffic in the mornings that would make a Google Maps trip faster than it says. 28th Street is where all the big box stores are concentrated in GR, so a very boring place to actually stay.

I would STRONGLY advise against relying on a taxi. Taxis in GR tend to not show up on time, even when you schedule and tip the guy heavily when he maybe picked you up from the train station. You don't want to have to worry about being late because of a taxi before interviewing...

Almost anywhere in downtown is within walking distance of Secchia. I don't know when you're interviewing (i.e. if it's within a week or so, idk when the next GR interview is), but as of yet, snow has not even been a thought to GR. So I guess look at the different costs and figure out what is more important to you...

January 19th in GR..

January 19th in GR..

There will be snow then 🙂

Given my experiences with late taxis and not staying in parts of towns I'm interviewing at that gave me a good feel for the city, I'd say to stay downtown. A little extra money would go a long ways for me to know that I'd have a good and as stress-free as possible experience, which is what you'd get by not driving yourself and by staying within walking distance / downtown.

@EBFONE HOME

I am not sure how expensive the downtown hotels are, but there is a Radisson on 270 Ann which is about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown. If you advance purchase your room it's like $80-90 a night. The drive is almost a straight shot to the hospital, and traffic shouldn't be a problem.

Grand Rapids is fairly small, if you had a car you could make it to Secchia pretty quickly from almost anywhere, taking weather into account. So if you had a car, and are looking to save money, stay somewhere cheap that's not near 28th Street (boring big box stores). As for close to Secchia, I think the Holiday Inn in downtown is about $100 (call and say you're interviewing at the school, may get cheaper rates, that goes for all hotels every time you interview). It's easily walkable in about 15 minutes probably, and you'll be close to plenty to do before and after the interview.

Let's hope we hear something!! The wait is killer!

Plus I want some good news to take my mind off finals this week!!
🙂

Good luck everyone!
Yes GOOD LUCK to everyone! I've been stalking SDN posts forever now but this is my first time actually posting.... I'm hoping to hear tonight (interviewed 11/28 at the U.P. Campus), I know it's a little ambitious but I'm too excited!

12/1/11. So less than two weeks, much shorter than the 5-6 weeks they said to expect a call

just got the acceptance call! Interviewed on the 17th or so of nov.

Congrats to all!

just got the call!!!!
interviewed Nov 18th

ahh best birthday present!

Pick me too! I interviewed 11/3... the wait is killing me!
Congrats everyone!

I was absolutely not expecting a call tonight--interviewed on 12/1 in EL--so you can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to see a 517 number while I was strolling along at the supermarket!

Good luck, everyone. I hope everyone is as fortunate as I am. 🙂

Hey all,

Anyone know whether MSU is receptive to "in the area" emails/notices? If yes, what is the best way to convey this? Email or a phone call? Thank you.

Didn't hear anything last night. Interviewed 11-10 in GR. What time do they send out those emails again 🙁 Still no updates on the system and no emails either.

Congrats everyone who's in though! Great job!

Same here. :scared: But maybe no update today is better. Perhaps they are waiting to admit us next week. I would take that over a waitlist or reject today. :luck:

If your file was reviewed this week, your status will be updated by 1pm today. If nothing has changed by then, the wait continues. Good luck everyone!

Well, I guess we should all congratulate ourselves on not being rejected. After not being called last night, the best we could hope for was not receiving a status update today. So, well done everyone. We'll get em next week. I'm moving back to the mitten next Tuesday, so a call from Dr. Maurer would be a great way to be welcomed home.

I like the way you think. The people who got in don't need congratulations because they're already ecstatic for being accepted to Michigan State's medical school. Instead, I'd to congratulate those whose applications have not been reviewed yet because we have survived another week of Tuesday night heart attacks ;-)

P.S. Congratulations to everyone that got accepted this week :-D

No kidding. What a roller coaster that was. Keepin the faith for next week.

FWIW, I asked him yesterday why I heard back so quickly, and he made it seem like it depends on who you interviewed with. If they filled out their evaluations quickly, then you could be pushed in front of the committee faster. That's just what it sounded like, so I'm not sure if it's true entirely.

Just in case it helps some of you who interviewed before me, maybe my interviewer is super prompt and/or yours is a huge procrastinator who likes to cause serious anxiety and stress in pre-meds?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I remember what it was like last year to almost obsess over theories on admissions. To help with clarity, that scenario probably isn't likely. They give us deadlines to fill out reviews that are usually within 2-3 work days. While I could see someone just not filling it out, I don't think CHM attracts the kind of person that would ignore what's best for the applicant and for admissions, especially when interviewers are volunteers. Unless Dr. Maurer explicitly said that was the case, it's probably some other reason. At any rate, any which way you look at it it's better than a rejection.

It's tough waiting, I know. But try to be optimistic and don't get worked up about wondering why. Best of luck to all of you!

I just got an interview invite today! I'm so exciteddddd!

I am still being held for interview decision... I am an in-state re-applicant. And last year I was interviewed in Nov., then waitlisted till May. I don't know why they put me on hold this year, when my stats and activities are better than they were last cycle...
