Thanks everyone! I'm excited. They called! Look out for area code 517 😉 And ny2mi, don't be nervous, it's easier just to not think about it. Best of luck to you though!!!

Does anyone have suggestions on how to kill a few hours when I get to Lansing the evening before my interview? Places to eat? Things to do?

Depends on where you're staying, but lots of stuff right north of campus on grand river and beyond. Lots to do, not sure where would be the best solo but always like Dublin Square, Peanut Barrel, or Harpers. Keep in mind these places can be packed depending on the night and the deal.

So... match day was last friday and here are some of the results for CHM:

- 97% match rate
- Surgery was the most common specialty, matched by 20% of the class

Other info:

- For the 2011 Step I exams, CHM had a 94% pass rate (consistent with national rate) and an average score of 225 (one point above the national average)

<3 MSU

This is awesome news! Dean Rappley mentioned on twitter than there was a 99% match rate this year, any idea where the difference comes from? 99% vs. 97% both still very awesome and well above the national average! Also, any idea if that 20% includes other surgical subspecialties (ortho, ENT, etc.) or was that 20% just GS?

Do you have any idea when they will post the 2012 match list? Thanks!

I'm not sure about the 97% vs 99% discrepancy, but my guess would be that the 99% includes those students who had to scramble (aka, didn't match initially).

The 20% does include other surgical subspecialties (ortho and vascular) so I suppose the 20% figure is a bit misleading.

I'm not sure when the 2012 match list will be posted. Here in GR we have copies posted of the match list for the students who did their clinical rotations in GR. I haven't seen the lists for the other clinical campuses yet.

Good luck to everyone anxiously waiting for a decision today through tomorrow night. I have been attached to my phone since this morning and am being irrationally anxious/nervous. I interviewed 2/16 and am hoping I get a (good) decision today.

I really loved MSU and Grand Rapids and hope they give me an opportunity to attend, even though it is so far from home. I am confident I would be both very happy and focused in that environment. THE PEOPLE WERE JUST SOOOO NICE in MI. sigh.

:xf: :luck:

Good luck! Would you chose the Grand Rapids campus for 1st and 2nd year?

Waiting patiently for some news hopefully tonight! Nobody received any calls yet?

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!:soexcited::soexcited::clap::wow:

I got the call at 6:37pm from Dr. Maurer himself. I was absolutely speechless, that's how happy I was. I was shaking so much from shock/happiness that I nearly dropped my phone. It was one of the best moments of my life.

Good luck! Would you chose the Grand Rapids campus for 1st and 2nd year?

I would probably choose Grand Rapids since it has more of a Downtown feel, which is similar to where I'm from (NYC). Also, I love the new building and health centers nearby.

When did you interview? Good luck. Hopefully, you'll hear soon!

ny2mi what timezone are you in, this time thing is all very confusing... I'm assuming that it is eastern 6-9. I interviewed 2/16... I've had a lot of waitlist news lately... still waiting on my first acceptance.

CONGRATS!!! 🙂 I am going to choose GR also . . . I <3 the Secchia Center!

Hi Napapiiri!

Would you mind sending me a message about the ABLE program as well?

Thanks!

NYC, so Eastern Standard Timezone.

Alternate list. 😕

Sorry, but don't lose hope!

As a reminder, here is your chance to update them about all the wonderful things you've been doing since submitting your secondary and reiterating your specific interest in MSU. I would also emphasize what makes you a great fit for the school, etc. Maybe others can comment on the timing of this update letter, whether it should be emailed or mailed (I'd prefer mail), and whether they've had success in the past.

Best of luck!

I interviewed 2/16 as well and was just given the alternate. I'd love some practical advice on an appropriate letter/e-mail to send that might increase my seemingly long odds of acceptance.

Hey, If I had sent some, I would've PMed you it, but I haven't. I remember seeing two people who had sent out update letters or letters of intent or whatever they chose to call it. Basically, a letter outlining specific interest to attend the school.

Here are the links:
http://mdapplicants.com/profile.php?id=6325

I read them a while ago and thought they were great. Good luck!

I'm thinking that the best time to send a letter would be mid aprilish. Can anybody comment?

I don't mean to make anyone nervous that might be waiting still, but I am a MI resident, 34M (I know, terrible writing score, pretty sure one of my essays didn't send lol) and a 4.0 BCPM GPA. I submitted my application in August, my clinical experiences are average-good, extracurricular excellent (actively involved in the rowing program at my university- currently head coaching that team), I worked during my summers and during my junior and senior years, have 300+ hours diverse volunteering... no travel and no independent research. 🙁 I don't really understand why I was an alternate, but there must be an absolutely stunning pool out there this year. Good luck to everyone!

ny2mi, were you the one with the long blonde hair in a pony tail?!

I thought that was YOU! lol I'm the one from NY...favorite movie Mission Impossible 4 (in case that rings a bell!)

Mid-april probably sounds good. Just get it in before early May.

I was also placed on the alternate list last year and I sent two letters of interest. Both are available to check out on my mdapps. If you have any questions let me know. Good luck!

MSU is quite irrational with their admissions. I know people with high 20s on their MCAT, subpar GPA and EC that got in, meanwhile I know people with 4.0s and 30s that got on the alternate list. Most of the 4.0/30s are going to the other schools in Michigan though

This happens at every medical school everywhere, because there is far more to being a medical student and doctor than your GPA and MCAT. Far more.

I know this is a frustrating and long process and is sometimes very confusing. Try to hang in there.

That's so true, Acoustic! What I've seen throughout the application process is that medical school adcoms use the MCAT/GPA to initially screen the thousands of applicants. The adcoms look for key things in the application that stand out (i.e., overcoming obstacles, excellent time management, demonstrated ability to handle large academic and non-academic workloads, significant awards, etc.) . . . otherwise, if they just read everyone's application in total, they wouldn't get through them all.

My personal experience has been that certain adcoms (MSU CHM included) look at your entire portfolio in order to determine if you fit the mission and goals of the school and to determine if you have proven that you have what it takes to be a successful team member of their student body - not just your academic capability as somewhat reflected by the MCAT and GPA.

I'm sooooo grateful that MSU CHM adcom does not put the most weight on MCAT/GPA!!

Hi there, I happen to be on the alternate and would like to talk about a few things. I sent you a private message and would love to chat!

Rejected today, kind of bummed but I expected it. I applied really late in the cycle and interviewed 2/16. Had a 4.0 sGPA and 3.9 cGPA, 29Q MCAT, quite a bit of volunteer work and a lot of clinical experience as an X-ray tech for those interested. Good luck to everyone else!

I interviewed on 2/17 and got put on the alternate list at first, got off of it this Tuesday 🙂 I didn't send any letter of interests if anyone is curious.
Anyways, does anyone have any insight on the two campuses ? I would really appreciate it 🙂

Hey! Does anyone know what the dress code is for lecture at MSUCHM? I know some schools wear scrubs or formal dress and I was just curious as to the policy!

No specific policy unless a patient is coming to speak to us. In that case, we are expected to dress professionally (business casual) as a sign of respect and professionalism.

do people wear scrubs at all or just basically jeans/sweats? Im only asking because I have all of these scrubs and I was hoping to get away with possibly using them for the next 4 years lol Thanks for the reply Napapiiri!

Scrubs are mostly worn for anatomy lab. You are actually required to wear either scrubs or a lab coat. I haven't noticed that many people at lecture in scrubs, but it is certainly acceptable.

Roverby, sorry about the alternate list. You seem like a class act.

No idea why you didn't get accepted but my friend is in a similar situation (excellent candidate but actually got outright rejected). you might want to consider emailing MSU to ask what exactly they were looking for that they didn't see in your application. I know some people who have done this and received some pretty thorough feedback.

I hope it works out for you.

just curious: is msu your top choice?

As someone who was accepted to and will be attending MSU CHM, I find it offensive that you call their admissions process irrational.

I'd like to think that those who earned an acceptance did so because of their personality, experiences, and grades, not because MSU chooses their accepted students without reason.

Medical school decisions are never predictable. Sure, I know a couple people with good MCAT scores who were rejected from MSU, but I know many more people with good MCAT scores who were accepted to MSU. I even know someone currently attending MSU CHM who scored a 40.

Just because you don’t understand something, doesn’t mean you should call it irrational.

My stats are higher than the 90th %tile for MSU listed on the MSAR and I'm on the alternate list. Pretty embarassing to be w/l when your friends and relatives have been accepted there, but I'm not bitter. Again MSU looks beyond stats (it seems like they just pick names out of a hat) but I'm sure there is method to the madness and it shows in the growth of the institution.

For MSU CHM, Life Experiences & ECs >>>>>>>>> MCAT

Thank God for that!

Have any accepted applicants been issued their PID/PAD numbers yet? I'd like to get my MSU user ID set up so I can access my financial aid package online. Thanks.

I'm not entitled by any means, but I would be inclined to think that I have stronger ECs and more patient contact than the average applicant. As far as life experience, I'm a traditional applicant, but a lot of my ECs have dealt with the underserved or have dealt with terminal patients etc (the most I could do while being a full-time student and working full-time). Again, I think it's pompous to say anyone "deserves" to be accepted, or should follow a specific formula to being accepted, but it seems futile to assume exactly what MSUCHM is looking for. Either way, congrats to everyone who has been accepted and good luck to those waiting. I might withdraw if I'm on the alternate list and I need to start deciding where I'm going to live and being realistic, but I'll be hopeful for now :luck::xf::luck::xf: 🙂

I haven't yet, but my $100 deposit wasn't received until March 14th. They say it can take up to 6 weeks from the time they received the deposit. I'd like to get mine set up too.

I got issued those numbers quite a while after the deposit was made. But they said it probably took longer because the office was held up from winter break. It took more than the 4-6 weeks like it says on the website. But youll see a box with the numbers on your ais page. I just got access to my fin aid package. Gotta love loans eek! Ha

Thanks! Yea, it's been about 9 weeks since I placed my deposit. Maybe I'll get in touch with admissions. I'm expecting nothing but loans, too, but would like to see my package nonetheless.

MSU isn't the only school that looks beyond the stats. I know someone with ample research experience, a great GPA, and a very high MCAT score who was wait listed by his alma mater, the University of Michigan, and someone else who had a lower GPA and scored 10 points lower on her MCAT who was accepted. I can't make sense of it but I wouldn't go as far as to say their process is irrational or that it seems like they pick names out of a hat. Members of ADCOMs are intelligent, accomplished individuals and deserve our respect, even if we don't always understand or agree with their decisions.

That being said, if you really want to know why you were wait listed, you should contact the ADCOM and politely ask for their reason(s).

Best of luck.
