Perhaps, "Is the application portal frozen?" 😛

No answer. Its possible they are on lunch (but I have gotten through this time before), or maybe they are out of the office for a few days traveling to schools to give presentations. IWANT2STAYINOR mentioned they are going to OSU tomorrow, maybe they are at UO today and that is why there has been no movement. No idea. I give up speculating. Its all one big mystery. If you decide to call you should post with any news you get. I'm sure everyone on here would appreciate it.

Edit: Haha bad timing. Was in the middle of writing this when Quack posted. Woohoo for movement!

does any one know what OHSU' bio requirement means "One academic year of general biology to include one genetics course". Is this one year general biology with a separate genetics course?

Thanks

I believe it's a genetics course and any additional biology classes that all add up to one year.

tried calling admission to clarify, maybe they're out eating. does that mean as long as one of the bio classes has the words genetics in it, its okay? thanks again!

My understanding had always been that unlike most schools, OHSU requires additional courses in genetics and biochemistry in addition to the standard chem/orgo/bio/physics sequence. Definitely best to call and ask though.

+1
I'm pretty sure admissions confirmed this for me when I called last year (prior to taking genetics). But I would check the MSAR, I know it has OHSU's required/recommended class list.

I just looked at the MSAR and you are right. It says: 1 year (3 quarters) biology, 1 quarter genetics, and 1 quarter biochemistry are all required. I don't remember the sheet we signed saying it in this way though. I'll try to call and clarify too. 🙂

** I just called and I was told that genetics is included in the year of biology.

Wait list movement to 46!

Looking back at some of the trends, I wouldnt be surprised if there were periods of close to a week where we didn't hear about any movement... Anyway 46 isnt great, but better than 44. just a few more spots to get through, then its my turn :xf:.

Just think, last year they didn't start accepting people till the 23rd. So technically they are ahead of schedule at the moment 🙂

Also, in 13 spots you would be IN, not next. They have accepted THROUGH 46. So 59-46 = 13 and you are in 🙂

Lol, that's what I meant.. But yes, we are ahead of schedule...

So maybe I'm paranoid but in the acceptance email it said another email with more details would be sent within 48 hours. The only additional email I've gotten is for second look day. Is that it? Don't we have to start the background check stuff, etc?

I could be misremembering, but I believe the "48 hours" bit was on the portal update. So the email it referred to was probably the more-or-less simultaneous "OHSU Application" acceptance?
As far as background checks, if you've already been accepted anywhere else and filled out Certiphi forms, I don't think you receive further notification when a new school accepts/inspects you.
You going to the June 11th second look? See you there!

You're totally right! Cool. Thanks. I can't make it on the 11th but my decision is already made anyway. I love Portland.

47 just got called up to the big leagues! Quack2, that means you're coming up soon. Maybe even by the end of the day with a little bit of luck. :luck:

Does anyone know if OHSU records all of its lectures?

When I interviewed there, I remember someone telling me that it was a student initiative to record the lectures. That is, the school did not offer to record the lectures, but rather the students organized the recording and posting system. And it was only audio, no visual.

Here's to hoping for a ridiculous jump in WL today 🙂

Question for the recently accepted -

Is there any deadline for accepting the acceptance?
Do you first have to deny or express interest, then have a packet sent in the mail to make it all official if you are interested?

If you are accepted, you are sent a congratulatory email and you are told that a packet will be sent via snail mail to whatever address you have previously put down. Within the initial email is the opportunity to respond and WITHDRAW, but nothing needs to be done should you desire to matriculate. Just sit tight and wait for the mailed package.

Does anyone know if OHSU records all of its lectures?

Teaching services posts the recording on Sakai for us, but someone has to take the initiative to hit record. Audio only, single speed, flash based (i.e. not iPod/iPad accessible). They had several reasons why we wouldn't ever ever ever have video. Naturally, you are welcome to (audio) record them yourself. Outside of GIE and a small handful of chalk-talks, it wouldn't help much anyway to have video since we get all the slides (most of them before class).

so... I did end up going to meet with the admissions people from OHSU as they were in town today... I spoke briefly with Debbie Melton (admissions director) who mentioned that there should be significant movement come mid-June as that's when many of the California schools start admitting off of their wait-lists (she said something to that affect). That is good news for all of us I suppose.

Additionally, they mentioned that they only interviewed 470 students this year, and expect 75-76% of students to be IS. Also, they upped the enrollment this year from 128 to 131, hence the reason for increasing the size of the wait-list...

Are you sure she said 131? During interview day they said the incoming class would be 136.

Interesting she said California schools will pull of the wait list in June because I was under the impression they had already started pulling people off the wait lists.

Did she mention the number IS vs OOS that were interviewed?

Yes, she said 131. I was also under the impression that it would be 136, but she stated it two or three times during my session, and I confirmed it with somebody else who went to the earlier session. I wasnt exactly clear what she meant when she talked about the California schools and their acceptances, but she did say that because of the California schools, there would be significant movement in roughly mid june here at OHSU. Maybe she meant through mid June?

she did mention instate vs out of state interviewing, it was something like 200 and 300 instate vs out of state respectively, from the previous years data. i dont remember the exact numbers so maybe +- 50? I know my numbers don't help much.

I think this might mean 131 MD (and MD/MPH) spots, 5 MD/PhD. Also, re: the California schools, mid-June might be the deadline for many waitlist acceptees at the UCs to give a final answer.

There are only 3 MD/PhD spots for incoming students, though. So I have a feeling that 131 is all-inclusive. Quite honestly, I find it a little disappointing that they tell us one number in the interview and then they change it after the fact. I know 5 spots isn't a huge difference, but it could matter a lot to some of us.

Anyway, I believe UCLA is still giving out acceptances (not yet accepting off of the wait list) and USC won't start taking people off of their waitlist until early June. So that could be a big reason for the mid-June shuffle.

I also think that 131 is the total based on what she said, I honestly dont remember a number given to us during the interview day because I was half asleep! I had the hardest time sleeping the night before, but I guess I did okay during the interviews?

Its interesting that the California schools are still giving out acceptances; its almost June! Its good to know though, I think I should start looking for a place in Portland starting in a couple weeks..

Would anybody who is part of the OHSU facebook group be offended if I joined it a little bit early?

Even 1 spot makes a difference. Could you imagine being wait listed within 5 spots of the last number and know that the reduced the class size from what you were originally told? That would be awful.

I personally am one of those people who never likes to get ahead of myself so I would advise against joining the group until you are actually accepted. I don't know if the current members would be upset but people who aren't accepted and check the facebook to see how many people are part of it may be upset. If you have questions I'm sure you could send a private message to people in the group with questions. Just my opinion though.

checking the facebook group for numbers and speculating on acceptances that way will not give you an accurate measurement of the actual acceptances. Think about it, there is no baseline to make this judgement... Also, I no longer think I am getting ahead of my self as the director of admissions basically told me that I was in (not in those words though of course)... Had I joined the group before even being on the wait list, or even being on the wait list with no projection of where it will end would be pre-mature though... I'm starting to think that 10 spots away is pretty comfortable at this point. If things go haywire, and all of a sudden it looks like I might not get that spot, I would surely remove myself.

I'm pretty sure the waitlist has moved at least 10 spots *in July alone* each of the last six years, including the drought years of 2009 and 2010. Considering you're 10 spots away with a week of May left, I certainly wouldn't buy any non-refundable tickets for late August.

You're certainly not hurting anyone else by joining a facebook group, though I can imagine it would be incredibly painful if you joined as #95 and then watched the list trickle up only to #92.

Hey all, #61 here. I've put off joining SDN till now mostly for my own sanity but at 12 spots away now I've lost all hope of sanity. Best of luck to all the waitlisters hopefullywe'll exhaust the entire list.

Welcome to the party. I hope few months from now we'll all be hanging out and laughing about this experience.

I did the same thing. As soon as the wait list started moving though, I couldn't help checking the forum constantly to see how it's moving along. I'm #53 btw...really going insane now. Good luck to you and the rest of the waitlisters!

Hi All,
quick question for those who have received the acceptance packet... What types of forms does it contain? The acceptance email states that several requirements need to be met before matriculation, and I'm looking for a little insight into what those are.

Anyways best of luck to those still waiting! Here's hoping for some solid movement in the coming months :luck:

Well, there are two forms that you need to sign and mail back. The first basically has you check one of two boxes: 1- I do accept or 2- I dont' accept. And then there is a technical standards form that you have to sign.

Anyone else hoping really hard that we reach 50 before the long weekend?

Definitely! It would be pretty upsetting going into a long weekend (3 days cause of memorial day) and absolutely no movement for 2 days before. If it is anything like this week its possible there will be no news on Tuesday either since that's the first day back in the office and there was no news Monday this week. That would be very rough. Sadly I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

I am hoping really hard it hits 53!

haha, ya.. your right there! just a few more spots.. You're basically in...

Its hard to tell people where you stand though, when they ask. "so did you hear back from OHSU?", well yes... "I'm basically in, but I havent gotten an acceptance yet". It gets hard saying that over and over!

 Yeah, I know what you mean. This weekend is going to be especially bad. I have a wedding to attend and a reunion. I have decided that I am just going to tell people that I will be attending OHSU in the fall (Most likely not a lie and easier than explaining the whole wait list and the trends and all that jazz). I just hope that doesn't come back to bite me. 😱

By the time Monday rolls around, there will have been 6 days with no updates. I was reading somewhere that people are only allowed to hold multiple acceptances for no more than 2 weeks. Is that correct? If so, then maybe there should be some real movement coming Tuesday and Wednesday (Wednesday would be two weeks).

That would awesome if that happened. Sadly, I don't think we should get our hopes up too high. OHSU doesn't hound people to make a decision once the 2 week deadline passes so unless the other schools do, they could end up taking a little extra time if they want. Also, I don't think most people take the full two weeks to decide. They probably have a decent idea of what schools they are interested in at this point and probably make their decisions fairly quickly. I'm hoping that the schools who haven't started pulling from their wait lists finally start this week. If that happens then their may be a decent amount of movement. Movement will also highly depend on the people who are currently on OHSU's wait list and if they plan to attend the school once pulled of or not. 2 spots could easily be 5 on the wait list if 3 people already have another school they prefer. That is what I am hoping for.

anyone else going to be extremely disappointed if there is no movement on the portal today?

I don't want to be disappointed so I'm telling myself it wont happen till tomorrow. Then if it happens ill be pleasently surprised. It sounds like this may be a slow week and it will pick up next week when the schools that are waiting till June to give out wait list spots finally start.
