I never recieved a secondary for this school, rather they sent me a letter about 2 months ago saying that I was on some "screener's waiting-list and applicants on this list rarely make it." I haven't heard from them since then. I was wondering if there is any hope for these applicants. Anyone in a similar situation? 🙁

I usually am pretty upbeat about most things but if you didn't get a secondary from SIU then the chances of getting an offer is pretty slim for this year.

You can get off that if you are interested in more rural areas/central or southern IL or have something relevant to their mission to update them on, but you have to send them update letters. I was on that list last year and got a secondary after updating them a few times.

If you do nothing though, you won't come off. guaranteed.

Pardon my lack of experience with the MD/JD program but do you need to interview in Carbondale and Springfield? Also from where are you coming from?

Interview is at Springfield with all other MD only applicants (includes third interview with a JD at same location). Flying in from southern California.

I got a secondary way back in October and ended up submitting it end Nov/beginning Dec (I had multiple surgeries with complications that month, I explained everything in my apps). I wasn't expecting an interview because of the late application, but I just got the invite today. No idea they came automatically if you had already received the supplemental! Def. made my day haha. I suppose it helps I grew up about 30 min. northwest of carbondale 😛

Interviewed here on 12/19. Sucks that I won't hear back till February. People that are already in the program, my only concern is that it is 100 percent PBL. While PBL is great, I feel like I need some structure at times (traditional lectures). Do current students find it hard to figure out what to study for on exams etc.?

It's not really 100% PBL. I don't think that would work at any medical school. What you will find is that there are "resource sessions" which means lectures that cover a lot of the material after you finish a PBL. They want you to do your independent studying first.

As far as knowing what to study for. They do a pretty good job of pointing you in the right direction. Between the learning issues in PBL, the resource sessions, and the SAQs (sample questions over the general material) you can deduce what you need to study for. What they will not prepare you for is the integrative questions. (If this happens in this organ system and you find this value on a lab test and the patient has this finding on examination what would you expect his blood pressure to be?) Those types of questions are what you are expected to be able to deduce as a doctor but because of the number of permutations they cannot prepare you for each one.

I actually think that the PBL structure is a better way to learn that than a straight lecture format. Also you will see questions like that on the USMLE so you need to be prepared for them.

Hiya,

First, let me say what an amazing resource this website has been over the years, I'm so thankful for all of you that take the time to pass on your knowledge and experience on these forums. You do such a good job that I've never actually had to create an account in order to ask a question, I have always been able to find it here just by searching the forums.

I recently received an interview request from SIUMed and should be in Springfield interviewing the last week of January. In the form, there was an option to check a box in order to meet with a financial aid advisor and/or a current student. I checked both of these boxes because I want as much information as possible.

Now that I've made it this far in the process, I'm wondering if any of the SIU contributers are married with kids or know someone else who is who would be willing to answer a few questions via pm/email/whatever. Or, do you think a call to the admissions office could arrange for a meet-up with a married student? Do they throw y'all into involuntary "meet with a prospective student" detail, or is it a volunteer thing? I am married with two young children and so my family is a big concern for me as I take this giant step in a new direction.

Anyone have a referral?

The SAQs tell you what you need to know. To study for exams I do them and know them front and back. Just doing that is enough to comfortably pass. That being said the people who score 95% on exams are doing far more, but the school is pass/fail so I don't feel the need to do that.

Exam questions are USMLE format whereas some of the SAQs are not yet (I believe they are working on updating it, but there are only so many ways you can ask a question without telling people the question on an exam). They do require integration and going a step above.

Example would be something like a 59 YO with a history of CAD and HTN taking lisinopril and metoprolol is diagnosed with a URI. Later that night he becomes hypotensive and has difficulty breathing. When EMS arrives they note respiratory stridor.

You would expect them to ask something like "What is the condition" but they will ask "What is the management for this patient" And the options will include Epi. because that is the 1st line for allergic anaphylaxis but you have to consider that the patient is on a beta blocker and so the epi response on beta is diminished so you have to use something else (Glucagon).

RE: JD/MD person. If you call and speak to our admissions rep they can probably give a good answer. The MD/JD's in my class are all IL natives so there was no travel for their interview. Your best bet will be to fly into bloomington or st. louis and then either connecting flight to springfield or hop the amtrak. I would discuss it with them though because I am not familiar with that application process.

Feel free to contact me. I have a wife and 4 children. As a first year I can only address Year 1 questions but I will do my best to answer any questions you might have.

I've spent most of my post-christmas off time reading through past year threads....you almost make me want to disguise my identiy just to keep you guessing, haha.

It's one of the more entertaining things for me to do....

Although I must say, I have yet to have anyone pick me out while visiting the school. And no cheating by asking Dr. C. who I am.

I'm a smart dude. I may not even have to ask. Based on previous posts, I know you're from IL. You sent me your first name in a PM. If you graduated from SIU Edwardsville and have a last name that also corresponds to a city in Texas, then I already know who you are thanks to a simple google search and the fact that you posted a linkdn profile online that corresponds to your graduation year.

Did I guess right?

If so, do I get a prize? 😀😀😀

omg caesar! you may have just been out creeped! haha

LoL, well played. Anyone wanna buy a slightly used Red10?

This just proves that it is not creeping, it's just the way life is now days.

The prize is Red10. You can have him or her. I don't want them anymore.

hey now! I know too much and you know too much for us to get rid of each other...

Anyone know when the next adcom meeting is? I'm hearing February, but haven't heard a date. How early do you typically have to interview to be in consideration for the second round of letters?

Went snooping today at the springfield campus. Looks great! Even saw Ceasar....but did ceasar see me?

Tutor Room A. Black hoodie sweatshirt.

Looked like a hoodie to me. Hold off on that restraining order though. All my apples are in the SIU basket....it would be a shame if I couldn't attend just because I wanted to give Ceasar a taste of his own medicine haha.

My family and I decided to take a road trip to check out the campus. I caught a quick glimpse of Ceasar while Beth was giving us a tour. It really was a good experience. I was happy to find that folks were as friendly as everyone says they are.

OH! I saw you folks. I was going to ask her who she was taking around in a group!

I just received my letter yesterday and was placed on the Ranked Alternate list. I know that my chances of getting in are slim but does anyone know if people got in last year from the Ranked Alternate list and how many?

The Class of 2015 doesn't have anyone from the Ranked Alternate List. It is my understanding that there was about 10-20% of the total AWPAs that didn't make it in.🙁

Wow that sucks. I guess I'll just have to hope to get in somewhere else or try again next year. Congratulations and good luck to everyone who has already been accepted or received AWPA status.

Hang in there alahood. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Last year it was the 28th. I'm not sure when the committee met though. Good luck!

Just checked, and it was the last friday in January the year before last as well. Guess it's a safe enough bet then.

Thanks! Also, if anyone else was wonderin, I'm from the northwest suburbs of chicago near wisconsin, so I'm not sure the bias against upstate applicants are as strong as what previous posters have sometimes implied

Sorry if this question has been beaten to death, but is it even possible for a northern Illinois resident to get into SIU? Should I even bother?

Yes, you can definately get accepted from northern il.

If you are a strong candidate then being from Chicago isn't a big issue. (Don't wear a Cubs pin or talk trash about downstate/rural IL.) Try to make a connection to Southern IL if you can.

If you are an average to weak candidate then being from Chicago is an issue that you need to worry about. Apply, do your best at the essays and interviews, make lots of connections to non-chicago places in IL and hope for the best.

Comittee meeting is on March 6th. Last batch should be released end of March.
