Thanks Cath, here's hoping that that schedule ends up applying to me 🙂

One question: what's with all the "vacation"?

some of those are just the state holidays. You only get 2.5 real vacations. A couple days for thanksgiving, a couple weeks for christmas, and a week for spring.

I was placed on the Ranked Alternate list at the end of January. Is there anything I can do to help my chances of getting in? Do letters of intent/update help? Or scheduling a visit after my interview?

Once you're on a list, you're on a list and don't move up unless everyone ahead of you declines basically.

I've been AWPA since December and still haven't received an acceptance.

Autophile is right. Don't freak out. If it is July and you haven't heard then start worrying. In the class of 2015 we had one person that I know that got excepted in July.

Good luck.
There is still hope if you are AWPA.

anyone know when the committee meets next to make AWPA decisions on recent interviewees?

Right, but as I interviewed there nearly a month ago, I imagine they will give me a waitlist, reject, AWPA decision prior to the 27th?

Alrighty then. I was expecting a decision closer to 4 weeks after the interview, but I guess if I need to wait another 4 weeks...so be it.

I'm not on the adcom so I can't really say why you would wait more than 4 weeks, but typically there is a set number of candidates they can present at each meeting (time restrictions). Perhaps you fell into the week when there was an adcom but your file wasn't prepared yet post interview to be discussed. Sorry you have to wait so long, I know it sucks.

Last interviews this week so things should be wrapping up. Otherwise remember it isn't over till class starts.

Is the committee meeting still tomorrow?

Beth told me at my interview in the first week of February that the committee was meeting March 6th to review my "batch" of applications, so unless that was incorrect information, they should be in session today.

Ah, good to know. Guess I should expect a letter next week than.

Gimme an A.....
Gimme a W....
Gimme a P.....
Gimme an A.....

What've you got?

Hopefully an actual acceptance on March 28!

Haha....

It's o.k.

When I first posted it, I spelled "APWA". How's that for slow.

Yes, I got an AWPA. Thanks for the congrats. Look forward to joining the SIU ranks (pending an actual acceptance.)

Don't feel bad.. I've been AWPA since October 3rd. Really crossing my fingers that I'm in this batch of acceptance letters!

!!!Heart Attack!!!

I just got an actual, real, confirmed by admissions acceptance letter!!!

I am going to SIU! Class of 2016!

I didn't receive anything about AWPA...so still kind of confused about how that works....

But I did get an actual acceptance! They sent me three emails to clarify it was an actual acceptance, I laughed, they seemed really concerned about my emotional state 😛

Congrats to the those of you who got accepted.

Remember if you haven't but have an AWPA there is usually a lot of movement between now and May 15.

Congrats.

Third batch is still not out, so keep those fingers crossed.

I'll be seeing you all in the Facebook group whenever that gets started.

If we are not accepted in the third batch, when can we call in to see where we are on the list? April 2nd? Thanks!

In past years it was usually just a few days after the batch went out. I remember hearing rumors that they might not do that this year. I never heard a firm answer about the subject though.

Beth Hecker told me at my interview that they wouldn't be telling people where they were on the list this year.

Correct. She said Dr. Constance had been getting too busy with calls about the quartiles. They decided not to tell people which quartile they are in anymore.

Waitlists everyone who interviews.
Never gives further info to anyone on that list. Nice.

Scumbag SIU.

I understand everyone's frustration. I would be frustrated too. The issue is a State budget issue. SIUSOM lost it's dedicated director of admissions and the state won't allow the school to replace him. Dr. Constance has other duties and can't dedicate as much time to fielding all of the phone calls. Sorry guys.

Understandable that some factors are out of their hands. On the other hand, I think sending out an email that said "you're in the X quartile, it's hard to judge how far on the list we'll go and we will be unable to give more info about where the list is at" would solve that problem AND cut down on the phone calls they're going to be getting whether they give out info or not.

well, not everyone....I think.

Though as an AWPA as well (albeit a recent AWPA) a little more info regarding your chances come April 1 would definitely be nice.

then again, get in march 28 and the worry about quartiles is over

Honestly, knowing where you are in roughly on this list only soothes the anxiety a little. During admissions you wanna know every little detail and calculate out in your head what you THINK your chances are based on when you got this email, the tone of the email, the phase of the moon when said email went out, etc. But honestly, knowing your quartile doesn't help you a whole lot. A few years ago, being in the top quartile might have meant you were 1 of 5 people at the top of the list and were almost sure to get in. But as more and more people are applying to SIU every year, the list of AWPA gets bigger and bigger and now even in the top quartile you may be 1 of 35 people at the top of the list and who knows if you'll get in.

No quartile info this year. The quartile is actually useless unless you know how many others are in it, and where within it you are.

I wish there was a better way too, but you play the hand you are dealt.

Well let's hope the top quartile is a bit less than 35 people..though who knows.

Honestly, however, the # of applicants to SIUSOM does not appear to be increasing on a yearly basis (2002-2003: 993 apps, 2003-2004: 1139 apps, 2004-2005:1039 apps....2010 entering class: 1058 apps).

Of course, this has nothing to do with the # of AWPA's given out. So maybe there are simply more qualified candidates every year.

Thank you for proving my point

His point has some validity though, unless you have info outside of this that shows differently. Unless AWPA is growing at the expense of the other wait-list, I don't see a way that it could be getting diluted every year. Plus, wouldn't it matter about # interviewed rather than # applied? I'm just going into this because it was brought up, I don't mean to dwell.

However, I do want to say that our doing some speculating is not some obnoxious gunner premed game playing "bet on our chances for the hell of it". Some people may need to find housing at another school where that's difficult, others may need to go for a plan B, etc. It's not a problem right this moment, but it will be for some people into the summer.

And I understand quartile knowledge isn't a rock solid predictor, but as far as I know Q1 almost always gets in, Q4 hardly ever does, and Q2 & 3 vary. It could help people in the former two make some decisions, but I guess that's out this year now.

Back however many years ago, nearly all AWPAs got in and the alternate list meant something. Nowadays that is far from the case. Med school admissions is more competitive in general and I hear faculty talking all the time about how strong the applicant pool has become.
While I understand people's needs to plan things out (I did go through this too ya know), I also know that this is far from the worst way of doing things and there are flaws in every system. And the staff here at SIU would do everything for us they could shy of taking the tests for us. As much as they would love to do more for the people going through this process, they are limited by time and budget.
For anyone not getting accepted in the last batch, make the best decisions you can, have a back up plan, etc.

Interview 01/13, AWPA 02/09, Acceptance 02/14.

I grew up in rural community in Europe but I went to High School and College in Chicago. On March 9th I received acceptances from Rush and Loyola so most likely I will be giving up my seat pretty soon at SIU. I really enjoyed my interview day here and I think school is capable of providing its student with high quality education. However, I dont think I would enjoy living in Carbondale/Springfield because I prefer big-city atmosphere. Also, I don't think it would be fair if I took a seat from somebody who truly is willing to fulfill mission of SIU.

Though I understand why people hold on to their acceptances for a while I appreciate the ones that give up their acceptance if they know they will not be attending. Thank you for easing someone's mind by allowing them to take your acceptance 🙂
