Well the issue is I already interviewed and hear that we should be receiving acceptances by November. My grades will not be released until late December since I am atill in undergrad. Am I worrying too much??

It seems like they won't make a decision on you until they receive your grades (unless all of your grades are stellar and they know for sure they want you regardless, I guess?)

It does say the time frame for a response will be lengthened if you are taking classes during the fall semester.

Then again, I have not interviewed yet, so I don't really know! Either way, I would not worry about it. Despite being rolling admissions, I think its still early enough that an extra month will not make a difference!

Good luck!

What if the classes you are taking are not required classes,, like anatomy and biochemistry? Will they still wait to offer an acceptance until they get those grades?

I interviewed on the 15th, and I was hoping to hear by November. If I get into USUHS, then I can cancel my other interviews and stop accepting ones from schools I'm not as excited about!

I really have no idea... but my guess would be they want to see your first semester grades if you are a senior, regardless of what classes your are taking.

I'm interviewing on Thursday -- I will try to keep my ears open about this for you.

These are post-bacc classes, so they probably don't care as much, but thank you. Good luck!

PS - for the current med students: is there anything going on at Caddies before this week's interviews?

i hope that's the case. i'm in my mph program now so i don't think those grades matter much. though at the same time, my undergrad grades were pretty bad.

general question: what's the weight of grades in the final admissions process once you've got an interview? i have like 5 pretty bad grades in my undergrad (no not B's) but i'm interviewing soon and i was just trying to gauge what my chances are...and also trying not to get my hopes up

1) Not sure if there will be a interviewee dinner this time around as MS1 and MS2 are both in exam week. Us MS1's are having a crazy time trying to adjust to "learning everything at once" deal and are kind of freaking out...

2) Welcome to the military where you hurry up and wait. I'm sure good news will roll around. You can always email admissions and thank them and ask them to clarify on that note as you're not asking about your application timeline but a general question regarding how not having completed the undergrad will play out in a decision. You just have to word it very carefully, and USUHS admissions people are generally nice.

3) About the weight of the grades, no one knows for sure, and I'm sure that applies to all the other medical schools. The general trend seems to be that you either have high GPA and average MCAT, or average GPA and high MCAT to get into most of the med school programs. Interview generally means they like where you are standing in terms of your grades, and if they need to have a second look at your file to compare grades with someone else, I guess it would be a very close call for them to do so.

Anybody else having issues checking DoDMERB statutes using the website we were given on interview day?

what if you have a crappy GPA and an average mcat but still got an interview invite? so in other words...unless you have stellar grades you're still in the woods with everyone else in terms of chances

Hi,

I am one of the student government officers in the class of 2014 at USUHS. For those of you that will be interviewing on 9/22, the students are inviting interviewees to come out and have an informal dinner with us the night before (9/21). The details are as follows:

Caddies
4922 Cordell Avenue, Bethesda, MD

Date: Wednesday, September 28th
Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM
Dress code: Informal

The location is a 5-7 minute walk from the closest metro stop(Bethesda, Red line stop). For more information, please contact the Office of Student Affairs.

what if you have a crappy GPA and an average mcat but still got an interview invite? so in other words...unless you have stellar grades you're still in the woods with everyone else in terms of chances

Then something other than just numbers got the admission committee's attention and decided to bring you in for interview! You know medical school admission is never a numbers game.. I wish it were LOL.

1) For lodging and logistics, I suggest using the student host program at USUHS. They will provide you free lodging to stay overnight and may even drive you to school on the interview day. To get to the host's apartment, I suggest you take a taxi or take a metro and meet them there. I actually took a red-eye flight and went to the interview straight from the airport. Interview day is structured into briefings, interviews, lunch and Q&A, and tours.

2) Physical exam stuff- I got more details on it on the day of the interview, included in their welcome packet. I don't know how they're doing it this year, but basically it's a sheet with instructions on who to call to schedule your physical exam.

3) Security clearance process begins after you're accepted. Although they have you fill out the packet and bring it to interview, the actual security process begins when you're going through in-processing during the first couple weeks of school. This info should be disseminated to you via email as far as I remember, about 2 weeks before the interview. I don't know how they're doing it for you guys though as the system changed from paper to electronic.

4) Plenty of spots in the Navy. Don't worry about that for now and just write down your favorite branch. I wrote more about the whole choosing process a few posts earlier. From my understanding, school chooses if they want to accept or not regardless of military branch; military branches just fill spots in as the school gives them names.

Thank you Ace of Hearts for your response.

I was originally planning on taking advantage of the host program but my friend is planning on coming with me because she is going to be looking at graduate programs in DC that weekend, thus we would need a hotel. If you have any recommendations (best access to base for best price preferably) that would be great!

Also, I plan on staying the weekend to see the capitol. Do you know the best way to get to the National Mall from Bethesda? Is the metro reliable or would we need to take a cab?

In regards to the security clearance, do you know if the packet that we have to fill out is the SF-86 form? I still have not received any information on filling out the packet but I assume I will hear something within the next week or so if we are supposed to be bringing it to the interview.

Thank you!

yea thanks Ace of Hearts!

And the only security thing I got was the base access card.

Interview invite for 10/27! 😀

I am a reapplicant. Last year, I interviewed on 12/09 and got on the waiting list but the waiting list didn't move much last year, so I am glad to have an earlier interview invite this time.

Homunculus,
Bethesda has fantastic hotels, but they are extremely expensive compared to almost anywhere else in the country. Almost everything in the entire metro area near transit is over 200/night.
Last year, I managed to stay at the Doubletree Bethesda for about 75/night by adding Friday night to get a "weekend" rate. No such luck year, and it is 242/night for my dates with AAA.
This year, I found a Comfort Inn in Silver Spring for 108 with AAA. That one is within walking distance of the Silver Spring station, and from there the express bus to Medical Center (NNMC) is about 20 minutes.

About how to get to the National Mall, I would take the Red Line from Bethesda and then transfer to the Blue/Orange at Metro Center, then ride for two stops to Smithsonian. The escalators literally come up to the National Mall in the grassy area by the Smithsonian Castle.

Yeah I got the e-mail notifying meof the base access card being sent but I have not received it in the mail yet. Have you actually gotten the card in the mail? When is your interview date?

A few weeks before my interview they sent me the SF86 to fill out and turn in day of interview. The base card came about 1 week before the interview - if you're driving this serves as your parking pass (to display through your front windshield) as well. Hope that helps 🙂

I'd definitely look to stay in downtown Silver Spring. It's much cheaper than Bethesda. Make sure you are actually in DOWNTOWN SS though... it's a big place, so you want to make sure you are by the metro. I don't know how the shuttles to NNMC work, but I take the J1 bus (DC bus) that stops right at the USUHS gate. It's $1.70 each way (using cash) -- make sure you have exact change. DON'T metro to Medical Center from Silver Spring -- they are on opposite sides of the line (despite being physically close) so it will take you about an hour.

To get to the mall -- you can take the red line from Bethesda or Silver Spring -- if the weather is nice, no need to transfer. I usually get off at Metro Center and walk down 12th st, which takes you straight to the mall or Gallery Place/Chinatown and walk down 9th st.

Is anyone staying near centreville, va coming to the interview this thursday (9/29)?I've got my family with me enjoying the area but am not looking forward to having my young children wake up so early for the ride into the city and wouldn't mind sharing a ride to the interview.

Of the 3 Washington-area airports, which one is the quickest to get back to after the interview and how long would it take to get to each one? Right now, I have an interview here and at another school in another city scheduled on back to back days and I'm wondering if I should reschedule...

has anyone who has interviewed stayed with a student host? if so, when did you find out that you were assigned a host? i'm holding off on getting a hotel reservation b/c i'm still waiting but my interview is next week...

I stayed with a student host for my interview on 9/22. My host emailed me for the first time on 9/9, almost two weeks before. He told me that the way hosting works on the student's end is that students walk into the admissions office and pick up your info out of a folder. Maybe no one has seen your info yet, or maybe your host just hasn't gotten around to emailing you yet. Wouldn't hurt to email USU and ask.

Also, there's a dinner the night before each interview at a restaurant called "Caddie's", near the Bethesda metro stop, with lots of current students and interviewees. One of the class officers usually posts in this thread about it, but the information doesn't change from one dinner to the next. Find the posts about previous dinners and PM the person who posted them for more info if you're interested.

Good luck at your interview! The interviewers are very laid back and friendly; my interviews were more like conversations, and the whole campus had a really solid feel.

Here we go! This thread is finally looking alive.

I heard from my host a month beforehand because I was undecided on the three forces and my host did not want me to join the "dark side" (Army).

Ended up being my top choice! 😱

Good luck guys!

I interview on 10/13 I am pretty pumped I am career military (10 years already) and admission to USUHS would be a dream come true

To those quiet ones out there that may just be watching the thread anxiously and awaiting your interview. Feel free to inbox me about certian things, because let me tell you I was one of those people who my undergrad guidance counselor looked at my application and basically told me that my chances at an MD school were nil. Well luckily he was wrong. So if you're really curious about those of us who were not like the "stellar" typical students, and want some questions answers or assurances. Feel free to message me. I will try to check this inbox weekly. (BTW: I'm in class 2014)

Hey all you 10/13ers! I am renting a car and would be willing to pick a few of you up to help keep my costs and your costs down! I fly in to DCA on the 12th so if you want a ride to or from whereever you are staying and USUHS let me know. Cheers and good luck!

DEFINITELY Definitely definitely fly into DCA (Reagan). This is the only airport that is actually metro accessible. I definitely do NOT recommend driving. Traffic can take hours near rush hour. The metro ride is about 35-40 minutes from DCA to Medical Center Station.

I know people had 6:30-7pm flights after the interview and they had plenty of time to get back to the airport. If you do have a flight after the interview, they will schedule you for the earlier interviews -- 1pm and 2:30pm... this way you should be done by 3-3:15.

That sounds good for me....it sucks that I won't be able to do the optional tour but I pretty much am trying to avoid missing more time away from school if possible at this point.

Do you know what's the best way to get there and all then without a car as in from the airport? I'm considering using a student host for this interview too. I definitely have lost my sense for mass transportation over the past few years living in cities and towns where a car is the only way to get around. Thanks!

Here is a map to the DC Metro:
http://www.dcmetromap.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/dc-metro-map2.jpg

DCA (Reagan National Airport) is at the National Airport stop on the Blue/Yellow line on the south-side of the map. The stop for USUHS is the medical center stop on the Red line in the northwest. There is a shuttle to the campus (which is adjacent to the NIH) - I'm pretty sure there's information about this in some email or document they sent you.

Now that you have that information. Here is the DC metro website where you can plan trips:
http://www.wmata.com/

Edit: Also the map has a key for transfer stations, and while these are major transfer stations you can transfer anywhere there's a station that services both.

Hope that helps 🙂

hey, so people who interviewed this cycle already..couple of questions b/c my interview's coming up...

is there anything else security related that we need to do other than have our base access card? i remember in the invite email saying there were forms to fill out but I haven't heard anything about security forms from the security office.

also..how was the day overall? thanks in advance!

You should receive an e-mail from Peter Sylvester titled "security info" (I got it 9 days before my interview). This will have the SF86 form for the security clearance. You need to bring this completed form with you along with your passport. You will turn the form in when you arrive and got to security at some point in the day so they can make a copy of your passport (or birth certificate).

Overall, the day was great! Very informative! It is a full day -- from 8:30 until 1pm with briefings, lunch and tour and then interviews start at 1. You have 2 interviews -- one with a military doc and one with a 4th yr student. They are very laid back and conversational. You should be done by 4pm at the latest -- which is when they will head to the simulation center, if you can make it.

It is a long day, but it's definitely a good day! Enjoy and good luck!

Both of my interviews were with military doctors, so maybe they switch up the format, depending on who is available.

I'm not sure they have a strict structure on who exactly will be seeing you - most likely a pool of potentials with at least one being a military doctor. I was seen by a military doctor and then a resident who graduated from USUHS.

But yes on an earlier note, security should send the dreaded SF86 and you should bring that with your passport or birth certificate on your interview day.

Just had my interview yesterday- was an awesome experience! I had so much fun and learned so much about USUHS.

I stayed with a host, but didn't hear from him until two days before- definitely get a hotel with a cancellation policy! I flew into Dulles, and I used the Metro to get where I needed to go; it was very easy and much cheaper than a taxi/car. I went to the dinner at Caddie's the night before, but I was the only interviewee there. There were 3 current students so I got a chance to talk to them and they explained some stuff to me. I really didn't have too many questions but they told me some stories and it was fun!

The actual interview day was nowhere near as stressful as I imagined. The front office people were so nice! This was my first interview, so I had no idea what I was doing really, plus since I'm a non-prior, I was worried about sticking out. I felt very welcomed because everyone was so nice and only wanted me to do my best. They have coffee and food for you to enjoy during the briefings in the morning. You learn a lot about the school and have plenty of time to ask multiple people questions throughout the day. If you aren't comfortable asking someone from admissions, some second year students come in while you eat lunch and you can listen to their experiences, then they give you a tour and you can ask them questions as well.

The interviews were definitely low-stress! Everyone had such good experiences (oh yeah, all the people interviewing were super awesome too! I think that shows the kind of camaraderie we will hopefully experience when we go there). The interviews were more conversational than Q&A. They of course ask the obvious questions (why military medicine, why usuhs, why medicine, etc), but then I felt like it was very easy to just have a discussion with them. I even talked to one of them about how I enjoyed baking and loved watching the Martha Stewart show 😍

The SimCenter tour was pretty neat- they show you some stuff and even have some animations of future plans. I would definitely stick around if possible, but if not, don't worry about it.

As far as picking a branch, almost everyone asks everyone why they chose one over the other, and it is good to hear everyone's opinions. It sounds like everyone is pleased with their branch, even if it was their 3rd choice. All of them have pros and cons, but I picked Navy because of its humanitarian work. I guess people find something they like or dislike to choose or eliminate branches.

All in all, great day! Sorry for the long post, but I was just so excited and pleased with my experience and wanted to share with y'all!😀

Sorry guys, have been freaking out about the upcoming finals week next week and didn't get a chance to check this forum as often as I wanted to answer questions LOL. For those of you who interviewed on Thursday, you picked the best day because that was the day us MS1's got our field training equipments issued to us (those gigantic ruck sacks) and got to see what the difference is from USUHS to other med schools. I will check this forum at least once a day to make sure you guys get some answers. I'm very happy that there are a lot of other knowledgeable people on this thread 🙂.

Oh on the side note, yes a lot of people do pick Navy because of its humanitarian missions and GMO tours on giant hospital ships, or w/ marines, or whatnot. Go ahead and read about each branch a little, ask around some people, etc. You can totally flag us down on your interview day and just ask us why we chose our branches, and we'll be happy to answer your questions 🙂

But yes on an earlier note, security should send the dreaded SF86 and you should bring that with your passport or birth certificate on your interview day.

does anyone have the link to the SF86? I called security and they said it was online but didn't elaborate and no one from Admissions ever responded to my email. any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: i think i found it: http://www.opm.gov/forms/html/sf.asp
is it the 127 page form?

That is the form that I used last year, but I got it through USUHS security office with their form "Revised SF86.pdf". I don't know if the details are exactly the same between the two forms. Can other interviewees elaborate on when they received their security form this year? I received mine about 10 days or so before my interview last year.

I am also having problems with the DODMERB site. I figured it must be down this weekend...

correct me if i'm wrong...but after interview you could receive a few outcomes:

1. rejection
2. wait list (meaning you're accepted but your service choice is full)
3. conditional acceptance (meaning if you pass your physical and security clearance you're in - there's no distinction between you did your physical but results aren't in yet vs. you haven't done your physical yet - so in other words, having the physical done now or after you receive a conditional acceptance doesn't really matter)
4. unconditional acceptance (meaning if your physical and security clearance paperwork checks in and you're in)

...right?

That's basically right I think. I'm not sure what their criteria are for the unconditional and the clearance issues. The other outcome is that you could be selected as an "Alternate" which would put you behind the people on the waitlist, but not rejected. That's where I was last year before being moved to the waitlist, and then accepted.

At the interview, a lady who explained the physical to us said the DoDMERB site would be down a bit for some reason. I forgot why or for how long, but she did say she was having issues with it too

4. unconditional acceptance (meaning if your physical and security clearance paperwork checks in and you're in)

...right?

When you get an acceptances, ALL of your acceptances will begin as "conditional acceptance" due to paperwork processing delay from their decision to accept you and them pulling your paperwork out and processing it for physical profile clearance and for your selected branch to "accept" you. The security clearance actually is done after you come to the university where you enter your information onto a gov database to gain your "security clearance" level during in-processing. When you get acceptance calls, don't freak out when they tell you you're accepted conditionally because that's how you will be accepted as until the paper processing catches up. Once the paper catches up, you get a mail that says you're unconditionally accepted. After that, you submit all of your transcripts and whatnot, then you get a small postcard saying your file is complete and all you got left to do is to schedule a flight with DoD for your training 🙂

To give you a perspective, I interviewed on the first day of the interviews, got conditional acceptance call about 3 weeks later, a conditional acceptance letter a week after that, and unconditional acceptance letter about 3 weeks after that.

Just booked my trip! Extremely excited.

Questions for my fellow 10/13-ers:

Has anyone received info about the physical exam yet?

Has anyone received the SF-86 form to fill out yet?

FYI if anyone is still waiting on their base access card I only got mine yesterday, but I'm in CA. Got the e-mail about it last week so don't worry, USPS takes a while longer if you're on the West Coast 😀

Questions for those knowledgeable about this process:

I am still an undergrad and am in the process of finishing my year of Physics. I will not be done until Spring, so what does that mean about me being (hopefully) accepted? Is it similar to the conditional acceptances mentioned above?
Early in the cycle (pre-interview) I got put on hold due to not having the Physics requirement and I had to appeal for them to reopen my file, so I am just worried that this will prevent me from knowing anything concrete until June. Any current students have a similar situation? Did they just offer conditional acceptance or were you put on hold?

Good luck to those of you interviewing this week!

Thanks

I am 10/13er. Same boat have not received info on the security form or physical. With that in mind I would not stress about it because you will have time to take care of that stuff if you get a conidtional acceptance. I would be more concerned about not having the prereqs finished BUT if they are interviewing you that means they may be willing to accept future coursework and give a possible conditional acceptance. I really wouldnt stress about any of your concerns because it is all out of your control now just do good in class and be relaxed at the interview 🙂

10/6er here and i haven't even gotten my SF86. I just went online and found it and hoping that's the right copy...

Citrusguy-

Maybe try calling them tomorrow? The letter says, "If you do not receive it [security info] within 7 days of your interview call the Security Office at 301-295-3033." The SF-86 is a super long form and I'm sure even if it's slightly different for USUHS all the basic stuff should be the same so I would just start filling out whatever SF-86 form you found online. When I filled it out for something else a couple years ago you had to go into pretty specific detail about past residences and contacts and such so I would start getting your residence history together ASAP. Good luck!

Alright cool. Yeah I'm sure they will give us more information on interview day anyway 😀
