do people interviewed early at UAB tend to have a higher chance of getting in? I got very quick interview invite back in october still trying to figure this process out... maybe i should stop for the sake of my own sanity lol

Honestly I don't think the whole process at UAB this year is going to make much sense. They are currently in the process of hiring a new dean of admissions, and from what I hear they will not be sending out the first real wave of acceptances until that is done. Few people have been accepted so far this year compared to other schools and in the past, and I'm assuming that is why. I know several people who interviewed very early and who I assumed would have been accepted immediately, but who haven't heard back yet. A few people have been accepted here and there, but their decision rationale eludes me. Specifically referring to your question, I would think an early interview invite suggests you are a pretty competitive applicant and would have a good chance of being accepted. However, some competitive applicants apply late, the interview itself plays a major role, and I have yet found a way to read adcom members' minds, so really anything could happen. Looks like patience will be especially needed this application cycle at UAB. Merry Christmas everyone!

As info for those applying OOS to UAB, the school gets pretty fair acclaim from U.S. News, but even though they accept a fair # from OOS only about 1 in 4 of them actually enrolls. That seems to be surely a function of the HUGE cost OOS. The Bama legislature requires that OOS tuition be TRIPLE! That surely serves the SOM badly because it holds down the relative competitiveness of the matriculated students since most come only from Alabama. Just an observation. 😕

Well, it's not like that's unique to UAB. most schools charge a ridiculously higher rate for out of state. Plus, I think it's fair that alabama tax dollars go toward education of alabama residents and people that haven't been living and paying that state tax for years should have to pay extra. They may not be recruiting the most competitive students, but they are drawing the ones most likely to benefit the state.

do people that interview early have a higher chance of getting in? assuming they all submitted at the same time... I got the remain under consideration status which doesnt surprise me, but I received a fast interview invite and I have been wondering if that means anything ever since lol

I would say yea. I am an MS-2 here and I interviewed on the first day they had interviews. 8 of the 9 other people that interviewed with me are in my class.

To my knowledge, if you are not accepted right away (within 1-2 weeks) you will wait until late March or early April to find out anything. Look at last year's thread for when exactly the waitlist came out. On that day, UAB will accept some people who have been waiting, waitlist the vast majority, and maybe reject a few (although from what I recall those were mostly OOS'ers). UAB does not over-accept meaning they do not have more than 176 acceptances given out at any time. This translates to lots of waiting as people with multiple acceptances make up their mind. It also translates to a lot of waitlist movement once May 15th passes.

This is pretty much true. About half of my class (MS2) was accepted in April/May

Has anyone started a "Class of 2016" group on Facebook?

Status changed to accepted on 12/2 and still no campus assignment.

For those who already have campus assignments, were you assigned your first choice?

My campus assignment popped up on my online status this week (or last). I was accepted on 11/18 so it took a little over a month. I'm assuming the holidays threw everything out of whack. It was my first choice.

Has anyone gotten a hard copy acceptance letter yet?

Yeah I got my letter early December. I was acccepted at the end of October so they should be on their way! My online campus assignment popped up a long time before I got my letter.

Good to know. The lack of a hard copy is unsettling, but I'm sure that's just my paranoia showing

Edit: Never mind, my hard copy was in the mail this afternoon.

Glad you got it! I completely understand the paranoia.

I'm not sure if I somehow overlooked the website or emails I've received, but does Alabama accept update letters pre-interview? If so, what email address should we send them to? I am currently "remain under consideration" and hoping to get an interview. Thanks!

just title your email 2011-2012 MD application update

I have been complete since 8/14 and my status still says secondary complete and under review. Is there anyone else who has been waiting this long?

Not quite that long, but still waiting here as well.

8/13. Same status. Just emailed them today to ask if thats correct (because there is a status that says reviewed and held for further consideration implying that the status I have has not finished review). They said that the status was appropriate and invites would be extended through mid march.

Are you a reapplicant?

Wow, they're sending out invites into March? That would mean they're interviewing into April. I've only known of one other school to interview that late into the season. That school, btw, is a new med school that received accreditation and appeared on AMCAS's school list in November (USC Greenville).

So, has anyone received a rejection yet? My app is a bit more complicated, so I can't tell much from my status page...

Yes. And that leads me to a thread suggesting that I have been moved to the final pile. At least I *sort of* know where I stand now. 😉 Thanks.

Same here, they seem to look at reapplicants more towards the end of January and invite them in February from last year's.

Edit: Just checked my status and today it changed to Remain Under Consideration for Interview, the down side of being from Florida

I just checked my status. Remain under consideration. Is this better than a rejection? Or is it like being told you're going to be rejected later?

Last year I had this status until May 15th when I finally got a rejection. I was also late in the application cycle because I first applied MD/PhD. Hopefully it isn't a death sentence because I am right there with you

Same status here, since October 17th...hopefully I'll hear something before May 15!

+1, love their MSTP and so sad they said no. :-(

Don't be too sad, Deutsch Arzt! Looks can be deceiving. There are classier institutions with classier deans out there. UAB's administration isn't the most student friendly. => http://barnabasredux.wordpress.com

Jesus! Is that you? Either way, I feel for Seth. I read the entire thing and listened to the first recording: utterly absurd. At least Dr. Lorenz, whom I've met, had nothing to do with that unjust debacle. She's an awesome person and really sold me on the program while I was in town.

I've seen similar situations happen at several institutions. Any time an investigator leaves for any reason, it kills projects and hurts students. But that's where it usually ends, at the project level. There's no excuse for the ensuing administrative interactions with the student. To me, beyond the fiscal ethics, the interactions between administration and student were ethically bereft. That really does make me think twice if I receive an interview or reapply next year...thanks.

Ethically bereft. That's a good way to put it.

Dr. Lorenz is pretty amazing. Still, an MD/PhD program requires unwavering support from both the medical and graduate schools. UAB lacks this.

Nathan Smith is no longer Dean of Admissions? Interesting. I suppose that's awkward timing for all of you currently applying. Regardless, Laura Kezar is still Dean of Students. Had you gone there, you would have been in for a real treat. Both deans are featured on the audiotape; both certainly have a great deal to learn about advocating for students.

Good luck with your other applications!

Wow, that's unbelievable. I've actually been thinking about applying MSTP after my first year. That is if I'm accepted MD this cycle at UAB

On one hand, I understand your frustration. I can't imagine many things worse than having several years worth of effort go down the toilet. On the other hand, I've been at UAB for nearly eight years, and I don't really have anything bad thing to say about the institution. I completed a PhD, and I will finish a postdoc in the summer before school starts. I was never abused, and my mentor trained me appropriately. While I worked on side projects, my dissertation project was protected. I published and wrote grants. I had access to excellent equipment. I traveled and presented at conferences. Most of the people in my department had similar, though not identical, experiences to mine. I'm not sure your experience is common. But, then again, I never interacted with the MSTP crowd, so maybe that's the big difference. I'm sorry you had a crappy experience at UAB. Best of luck :luck:

anyone get any updates? I interviewed in december...still haven't heard anything back. Guess I'll have to wait till march?

I interviewed in December as well. Still havent heard anything either. I still check my status everyday in hopes that something changes haha.

I interviewed in September. Still nothing. I'm thinking I've got a silent rejection.

I have not heard anything as well. Hopefully February will have us all getting acceptances.

September interview, heard nothing. My premed advisor did say that UAB is way way behind this year in both interview invites and acceptances. Maybe that will ease some restless minds a little

Received an interview invite a few hours ago!

Interviewed in December... haven't heard anything. High MCAT (38 Q) but low GPA (3.25... from a good undergraduate school, though). Very nervous!!!

Nope Alabama considers students as in-state only for educational purposes, and throughout the four years you would pay OOS.

👎
Can someone post a link verifying the above information? I might be interviewing here soon, but if this is the case then it might be prohibitively expensive and I would not bother flying out... :-(

This is true; however, from what I can tell they are good about oos scholarships. I'm oos as well and most likely matriculating.

I always wondered if that's how UAB drew such a large OOS student population for a state school.

+1 about the OOS student status. It came up during the morning intro session with Dr. Smith. It comes down to UAB's definition of a state resident excluding individuals being in the state solely for the purposes of education. There was mention of one possibility of being reclassified... by marrying an Alabama resident... but perhaps it was a joke

Dr. smith is not the dean anymore right? I heard fewer acceptance has been offered this year due to leadership transitions in med school
