to be honest i kinda want to be in the lower tier rightnow; at least that way I know my chance of acceptance is not high and I can fully concentrate on my apps for next cycle. this middle tier thing is like dangling a juicy steak right in front of a chained, abused puppy. its just not cool dude lol

Yes, I was in the middle tier. I will be withdrawing acceptance from usa.

i finally couldnt hold it anymore so I emailed Dean Smith about the waitlist this year. Actually I asked should I reapply asap due to the "humongous" waitlist size and he said:

."We are well into the Middle Third of the Alternate List and your chances for acceptance are such that I believe it is reasonable to wait to submit our application for 2013." .

patience?
Wow!! That's awesome! Thanks so much for sharing! I'm assuming that's good news for all us middle thirds 🙂

That's very good to know!! Thanks for having the guts to send that email for all of our sakes! Haha

my one and only speeding ticket back in high school just showed up on my background check; i didnt disclose it because it was my first one and the whole thing got dismissed after i paid my fine. it was classified as misdemeanor🙁

i emailed dr smith about this, but I shouldnt have any problems since it was dismissed right?

I highly doubt that a ticket will keep you from getting accepted. I received about 4 when I was in highschool. (there was a lot of 10mph school zones :/) Anywho...I don't think those particular "crimes" matter. Am I right? I went ahead and released mine.

did u disclose your tickets on AMCAS?

I have a few traffic tickets too and didn't disclose them either. Didn't even really think about that til now... Apparently how tickets are viewed varies by state and how lucky for us Alabama considers them misdemeanors. Ugh.

I really don't think it will matter though. How could they expect us to know that our state considers them misdemeanors. We want to be doctors-- not lawyers.

i talked to dean smith and peggy and they said there shouldnt be any problems. for those of you accepted, do you have a certain time limit to accept the offer or does uab just assume you are coming if you dont do anything?

I know that this is a very specific question and probably isn't asked often, but does anyone know if UAB allows re-applicants to apply EDP?

i just got accepted at usa; i asked dr scott the same question days ago about the waitlist and he gave me pretty much the same answer.

patience people... patience lol

I requested feedback about a week after May 15th and got told yesterday my file was given to an adcom member. Do you think they were just holding it to see if I had a chance to get in off the waitlist and I should throw in the towel and register for classes? Has anybody else off the waitlist got feedback and how long did it take?

Here's a little theory I have regarding the lack of wait-list movement yet adcom's optimism...

Looking at the fbook group (and cross referencing with google...), I've noticed that a large number of OOS people have already accepted UAB-- 29 to be exact (2 being EMSAP people). I think this is because competition for med school is going up, so a lot of OOS aren't getting accepted elsewhere. The adcom didn't expect this (and how could they!) so they thought the list would move more than it has.

With that said, hopefully I'm wrong and we'll all get in! I just thought I'd share some of the neurotic work I've been doing the last few weeks with you guys!

Isnt that normal though for oos admission? Plus wouldnt the adcom realize by now that there wouldn't be much more movement? From what i hear they are still quite optimistic about movement on the wait list during the rest of the summer

I probably should have shared this info with you guys already, but I requested feedback last week and based on what she said I would guess that they truly don't know how much more movement they are going to get...I'm not sure whether this is good or bad news. :\

From what I've heard, they like to keep OOS to 20-30 people. If I was able to find and figure out 29, I'm sure there are plenty more that I was unable to figure out-- probably another 5-10 or so-- which makes a huge difference. Hopefully you're right though and the adcom would've realized by now that there wouldn't be much more movement which makes their optimism good news for all us waiting!

Congrats!

Are you planning on accepting the UAB acceptance and denying USA? Just wondering if you were leaning one way or the other.

i will decline my place at south as soon as I receive the official letter, but i am on vacation for the next week so i cant look over/verify the thing now.

cant believe I am actually "rejecting" a medical school...

Oh no friend! Reject away, reject away! I would love to take your spot at USA. Lol (but seriously)

Congrats to all for your acceptance to UASOM!

I am currently a 4th year and I am looking to unload some books for the cheap. The costs can certainly add up for books and I know that they are budgeting less and less for them in your loans so I thought I would offer my books for a hugely discounted price.

I have about 70 books of varying disciplines spanning 1st through 3rd year classes/clerkships.

If you are interested please send me a PM or email ([email protected]) and I can send you the list of things I have and probably give you an idea of which books are good to have and which aren't.

Congrats again,

JVB

quite a few people have joined the class of 2016 fb group in the past couple of days... maybe you guys should try what i did; email admission and ask should you reapply rightnow or wait based on current WL status.

I hate to say it but most of those who've joined the group lately are first years on the orientation committee (my bf is an MS3 and told me)... And I actually emailed Dr. Smith the other day myself and it doesn't seem like good news for the rest of us waiting. He told me only a couple of people have been accepted in the last 3 weeks. Consider yourself lucky gatorade-- you might've been one of the last wait-listers to get the call.

We prefer to be called second years 😛 I hope you hear good news soon. I've been pulling for you all application cycle.

I can't view the class of 2016 FB page for some reason, how many people are in the group (orientation committee included I guess)?

193 in one, 91 in another. i think the 193 one is the official one

Haha my apologies. Y'all deserve the upgrade too! And thanks for your support! I'd be happy going to south but it'd be nice to stay close to friends and family.

AlaJ: last time I checked there were 193 members in the group, but I've been keeping count of Second years and such and it comes to about 165 true acceptees.

I know this may be a dumb question, but does anyone know how you go about requesting feedback?

Has anyone heard of any movement or called the office recently?

UAB finally updated their website regarding the alternate list:

"Currently we are accepting applicants from the middle of the "Middle Third" of our Alternate List. Since acceptances from the Alternate List are in response to withdrawals by currently accepted applicants, we cannot predict if or when the next Alternate will be accepted. Historically, there are few changes to the class in the final weeks before matriculation and it is unlikely we will have more than two to three acceptances from the alternate list between now and July 30th."

I guess this is bad news guys....
