The first question asks if you specifically applied to UA-PHX. If you say "no" (which is your case), then the text box is inactivated and you can't type anything. So you don't need/can't talk about your reapplication

I don't know much about Tucson, unfortunately, so I'm not sure if this is a formal program that is an option in the curriculum or how it works down there. In Phoenix, you definitely can do rural health electives in Family Medicine and many of my classmates did rural health internships after their MS1 year in other areas of medicine as well (including Pediatrics and Surgery). I believe both schools have a loan pay-back program for those who commit to primary care specialties in rural areas in Arizona.

If I remember correctly, the loan program was discontinued - only those currently on the program would continue, no new students. The Rural Health Professions Program is an option in Phoenix, although run out of Tucson. I have a friend who is currently doing this in Phoenix and spent her summer in a rural community and then she'll return later in the program for additional rotations. She had also wanted to the loan program, which is where I got the information about it discontinuing.

Is anyone attending the Interview Workshop in Phoenix this weekend? I'm exciting to learn more about the MMIs. This is the second year for Phoenix using this format, which must mean it went well last year.

Okay, thanks for the correction. And as far as the MMIs go, they were definitely very successful last year, and while they may sound very stressful to applicants, most interviewees really actually enjoyed them! They really give you a better shot at putting your best foot forward - more opportunities (as there are several "mini-interviews") even if you blow one or two of them or don't hit it off with a particular interviewer.
 
I'm going to the workshop next Wednesday, if anyone else will be there.

Glad that I made the cut, I'll be joining on wed - this is a great opportunity to get a look at MMI system and meet some of the staff/faculty at UA-PHX.
 
Interview! Sep 12! just got the email
 
There are not very many seats at each interview date (24, correct me if I'm wrong), but it looks like there are a lot interview dates scheduled throughout year.

Are lots of people getting invites or are they just slowly releasing them...
 
I think they've only released small batches of invites. The schedule tells you how many seats are left for the dates and not too many were taken. Maybe 16 spots were filled? So yeah they have not sent out too many invites at this point.
 
Interview Invite! 9/12/11... only a couple left for that day it looks like now
 
Interview invite! I signed up for 9/12, the first day. Looks like all interviews happen on Mondays only. I think it's great there's a pre-visit event.

Complete on 8/12 so they read my app and decided very quickly. I'm going to the Interview Workshop this weekend so hopefully that will help my preparation. If anyone else is going on Sat, I will see you there.
 
Interview invite today but the first day was all filled up. Got in for 9/19 though...

Couldn't get into either workshop though, they were full by the time I checked for them earlier this week. 👎

Invite! Looking forward to meeting some of you on the 11th/12th. I will definitely be hitting up Cartel Coffee Lab before the early check in.
 
I scheduled my interview for 9/26, that was the first Monday I could do.
 
Attended the workshop on campus yesterday and was impressed with the admissions office and students! They seem so happy, nice and very excited with their school. The MMIs are not scary or tricky either. We got to practice and see a real question. I feel a lot better and ready to interview now!

For us middle class Caucasians, we just have to get creative. Talk about the times you've lived in other cultures and how it broadened your experience. Talk about any ECs you have working with people from other cultures or lower socioeconomic circumstances. You may not be "diverse" yourself, but at least you can show you have knowledge and appreciation of other cultures. I think that's all they're looking for.

Show that you know the doctor-patient relationship is a personal one, and people from underserved communities need physicians that share a common culture/background, or at least a doctor that understands them.

Read the book "The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down" for an extreme example of how things can go wrong when doctors don't understand the patient's culture.

Simple speeding (less than 20mph over the limit) isn't a misdemeanor in AZ, it's just a fine and points on your license. I have a couple of speeding tickets, so I checked into this. A misdemeanor would be something like reckless driving (extreme speed), 1st DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without insurance or registration, etc. Stuff that shows poor judgement. If you have something like that, it would be best to list it IMO.

And Congrats to you too, Steve! I'm not sure whether to take the 9/19 or 9/26 slot now. Only 3 spots left for 9/19, but wondering if 1 month is too short.

Btw, wow, 2011 stats. 145 OOS interview and 13 accepted!

I see that their class was only 50 students, and wondering whether it will be bigger this year.
 
Decided to go 9/26. Anybody going for the interview on that date?
 
Haha, yea. It's actually 3.4, 36.
I didn't apply to many schools last year (like 12) and applied to too many high-tiered schools the year before (all top 50). I didn't know anything back then and just applied, but now I did a lot of research on schools and studied the process, and I guess third times the charm 🙂
