Great post, Mast Cell! It was very encouraging!
You're certainly correct about how ridiculous people can be on here- I realize it already but yet I still allow it to stress me out!
I'm a Cincinnatian, so I would love LOVE to go to UC!! My fingers are crossed for an interview invite sometime soon!

. . . There's amazing opportunities for research, tons of clinical experience from the first week of school, strong programs for abroad travel, etc. . . .

First off, thanks for the positive and warm post. We all need more posts like yours right now. ;-)

I was hoping you could elaborate a little on the study abroad opportunities. I looked around the UC med website but couldn't find any specifics. I'm very interested in doing a clerkship or two in Spain and/or South America.

Thanks and good luck on your boards!

Does anyone know how U. of Cincinnati feels about "in the area" phone calls? I have an interview at Ohio State in October and it'd be nice to save money on a second trip back to Ohio (assuming they want to interview).

You should definitely try-- the admissions office is really nice! I think that rarely works out though. I had a few friends attempt to do the same last cycle at different schools and they were not successful :/

Thanks. I think I will try.

Do you know how I should ask them? I'm thinking something along the lines of "I'll be in the state for a different school, so if you're planning on interviewing me, now would be a nice time" without sounding as pushy.

I would just say that.. you're an applicant from California and will be in the state during the week of ____. Would it be possible to find out if a decision has been made regarding an interview, and if so could the interview be scheduled during this week?.. something along those lines. I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to ask them about this- flying from Cali to Ohio is a lot of money, so I really don't think they'll have a problem with you asking.
I hope it works out well for you!

anyone who has interviewed, how'd they go? was it more of a monologue answer or a conversation? I have no idea what to expect 😱

Thanks for the advice!! I sent them an email and they replied a couple days later with an interview invitation!!! I can't believe that worked! They scheduled my interview for the day after my Ohio State interview. So excited!!! 🙂

YAY!! That's awesome! Congrats!

I had a really great interview experience here yesterday. The new curriculum looks bomb, the clinical opps here seem amazing, the students are all very happy - I was impressed. The day was pleasant, lots of long presentations, but they were helpful. The interviews themselves were NBD, honestly, just relax, use your brain, and converse. Plus there are 8 of them, so even though I had 2 that were suboptimal, I'm not even worried 🙂 Very low stress! They said yesterdays interviewees would find out the 3rd week of Oct whether they were accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. Also sounds like they have a pretty substantial wait list with a lot of movement. Overall 👍

Just submitted... About how long has it been taking to process applications from submission date?

So anyway... here's why I felt the need to post:
I want to let you know that it's suuuuuper early in the admissions process here. It's a fact that the majority of applicants haven't heard anything at all. Do NOT let people who post on here freak you out when they say they've received interview invites or acceptances already.

thanks for this

Interview Invite! Complete 7/27, Invite 8/23

Guess I'll have to figure out this MMI business.

interview invite less than an hour after I was verified! for 9/26, OOS but I live in NKY which is almost IS status. the questions you have to answer just to schedule an interview are way more involved than the secondary was! crazy 😀 not complaining though...

II / OOS!! I was really enamored with the idea of MMI when I first read about it because I'm all for any tactics that really prioritize evaluating the person beyond paper. But I was so afraid I wouldn't ever get a shot at experiencing it. I'm slightly apprehensive, but more than anything EXCITED :soexcited:haha

Good luck dave and strawberi, and to the rest of you guys, +1 what people are saying about it being super early in the cycle. It doesn't matter when we get in so long as we get in somewhere...right? :xf:

samesies ... looking forward to it!

woooo, congrats everyone! when were you all complete / stats?

thanks! complete in mid July. LizzyM of of 70, high MCAT low GPA (sorry, I've started being a little more vague to avoid id'ing.)

i hope you hear good news soon. i honestly thought it was a rejection at first because they send you an e-mail saying "University of Cincinnati College of Medicine - Status Change - Date", and I immediately thought, uh oh, that can't be good. Never been so happy to be wrong before in my life.

(ps: good luck at vcu!! i'm very envious. one of my best boy friends goes there and he LOVES it.)

*edit: Has anyone else noticed how ridiculously pricey plane tickets are to cincinnati, or is it just me? I checked Kayak yesterday and the LOWEST (read: one stop, terrible takeoff/landing times) fares were $600+. I nearly had a coronary when I checked again this AM and they were nearly $900! Seriously, $200 more and I could fly first class. I don't live on the west coast. Why is this flight so expensive?

So I'm pulling the trigger on a nonstop flight (I'm very risk averse) to Cincinnati. It's a flight that's less than 2 hours and yet I'm paying over $900 for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm very grateful for and excited about this interview, but that ticket price makes my wallet very sad.

I wish Southwest or Jetblue flew to CVG.

😱

Cross-country (from LA to the East coast) is running around $400. However, I am making one stop. Maybe that's the difference.

nope, one stop was still like $600+ yesterday. And yeah, I live in the midwest. Rarely ever do I pay more than $500 for domestic flights. I've been to Boston, Norcal, Socal and Florida in the last year. I've also been on a Logan to LAX flight that was definitely less than $600. I don't understand it.

So right before I hit that dreaded button and emptied out my account, I google mapped it out of curiosity. It's about a 5.5 hr drive. I guess the questions are...should I? do I want to? you know, it would be ~4 hour thing via plane anyways, what with getting to the airport/security/cabbing from CVG to cinci. Do I value 1.5 hour of my time at ~$800? yeah. I definitely do. Guess I'm driving. Anyone have any words of wisdom on doing a road trip to your interview?

I personally love road-tripping to interviews. I go to school in IN and drove 10 hours and 8 hours for interviews. You get to have your car and store your stuff, and its a great way to just chill out about the interview. Either call someone during your drive and have a nice convo or get some good music and enjoy!

+1

I've been road-tripping for fun since I was 5 years old. I often drive from Nashville to L.A. with the wife. We get along better on road trips than we do at home. We even did a "Great Northwest Road trip" where we drove north to Milwaukee, took a left, and drove to the Washington coast and back. It eventually went downhill when her freakin' radio blew out on our way back while we were in Fargo, ND. But I digress... Enjoy your trip and chillax!

Have you checked out the prices for a flight to Dayton airport? They typically have tickets for much cheaper and it is only 45 minutes to an hour north of cincinnati. I'm not sure if the reduced flight rate will be worth the cab ride/car rental but seeing as how the cincinnati airport is in northern Kentucky and about 20-30 minutes from UCCOM, it might be worth it!

Advice like this is why I love sdn - one stop shop for many great perspectives. Thanks, guys. Unfortunately non-stop tickets are still pretty unreasonable from Dayton ($700+) and one-stop flights would take longer than driving.

Fun fact for those of you who are also astonished by the price of a plane ticket to Cincy: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/06/which-airports-have-the-most-unfair-fares/ It doesn't have any airlines with a hub there. Here's hoping Southwest will take over there eventually.

So I think I'm sold on the road trip idea. I'll just make sure to stick to the speed limit very carefully - wouldn't want to have to change my answer to one of the secondary/interview confirmation questions, haha.

Hope to see some of you guys there! :luck:

Take the Megabus! It goes from Chicago to Cincy and it's super cheap! I've taken it to Chicago and back many times- it's usually around $50-80 round trip!

One reason why being in the midwest is awesome for med school apps. You can drive to an incredible number of med schools in <10 hours, and not even have to worry about airplanes and taxi's.

+1 Megabus is awesome and so easy, it stops right downtown in Cinci, ~10min from the med school

CVG is notorious for being one of the most expensive airports in the country, no idea why

II for 10/07!! Wow, not much notice. Good thing I live nearby 😛

For those of you who have interviewed already, what did you think of the MMI format? Also, would it be bad to leave the "additional information" question blank?

All around great experience today at my interview. Facilities are very impressive, staff was extremely courteous and receptive, their curriculum is exciting, and the research/clinical opportunities are extensive. The MMI format is actually a lot less stressful than the traditional interview format, IMHO. I'm really excited to hear back from UC in a couple of weeks!

Hope this hasn't already been discussed but I couldn't find it on the thread so far: Does anyone know if UC accepts additional info after the secondary?

They seemed thrilled to get a grade update back in August, but I just had someone offer to write a LOR that I think would really set me apart and I'm not sure if they'd be interested in getting it.

I would also like to update Cinci on my current activities. Anyone know the contact information of the admissions office? I couldn't find it anywhere on their website...

Yes, thanks!

UC's website states on the FAQ page how to update them:

Can I add additional information to my file regarding research articles, updated grades, activities, honors and awards etc.?
Yes, this information must be emailed as a PDF document to the Office of Admissions via email at [email protected]. E-mails must include your name and AMCAS ID #.

I'm sure both ways will work. But they seemed to want it in pdf form.

Good call, thanks!
They probably just print it off either way, but a PDF would be nicer than a printed email. Good to know.

From secondary submission date to interview invite date, how long did most of you wait?

Yeah I just got an interview invite to the Diversity Interview Program as well. I'm excited but I can't find any information on the website about it.

got an II here just now - fantastic! if only all secondaries cost as little as UC
SS: 7/13
II: 10/13
OOS

I received the same email too. I'm going.

The diversity interview is just a regular interview except you arrive a day earlier and are given the opportunity to meet with some of the faculty, minority med students and director of multi cultural office. Basically the most competitive minority applicants are interviewing at once (well kinda). It is a great chance to familiarize yourself with the college and you get lots of free food! Congrats and good luck.

Eager following this thread...Congrats to those with interviews! 🙂

What's up with Cincinnati? I'm pretty sure they said that acceptances/rejections were going out on 10/15... Anyone else out there expecting an email today?

Anyone know if the admissions committee is meeting tomorrow for the 10/7 interviewees?
