Not applying to UMich, and don't have a twitter. I would however like to note that following this whole escapade has been a rewarding "break time" activity. I think whoever is tweeting gave some valuable advice in insult form as well: prepare to be held accountable for your actions.

G'day, and to the UMich Adcom tweeter: 👍

it was really hard to get used to during the winter due to the wind chills (my face felt like it was going to fall off!).

Yeahhhhh there will be lots of that if you end in up AA as well. BUT! We also have the most beautiful springs, summers, and falls. 😀

I want to see seasons! There are no seasons here on the coasts of Cali!

They don't screen before sending out secondaries so prepare to be happy!

Well I'm OOS so they screen, but I just looked at the screening requirements on the website (was going off MSAR before) and I should be getting a secondary. I get intimidated sometimes by the twitter posts concerning what they're looking for!

Hi everyone,
My school doesn't send in LORs until late August/early September. Everything that was in my hands is done... I know that some schools will still consider you before your LORs are in, while some are very clear that your file isn't looked at until everything is in. Does anyone know what UMichigan's policy is on this? I know it makes a lot of sense to wait for the letters, since it lets schools get a better sense of the applicant, I just am a little worried because I know UMichigan has a very strong rolling policy and it's one of my favorite med schools and I'm afraid I'll be at a disadvantage 🙁

I really like their Twitter feed too! It's nice to have a sense of what happens in an admissions cycle, and to feel connected to the people who are going to read my app. I loved the tweet about Pure Michigan... amazing commercials...

PS- my college adviser recommended SDN as a way to learn about the process from other people going through it, and to feel less "alone" in the overwhelming moments. The University of Michigan is ok with us having this forum, right? Provided we are polite and just here to help each other and ask questions? I got a little nervous and thought about deleting my SDN account... 😕

I think most adcoms know that a lot of people use SDN. My friends who have applied have told me lots of jokes that admissions people have told about SDN while interviewing. Just be careful what you say. It's easy to have an "us vs them" mindset when we pre-meds think of adcoms, because overall, we hear more bad news than good. But they're doing their job, which is to let the best students for their school in. If you get rejected, it sucks, but it's not a reason to dislike the adcom. As we saw last night, they're people too, some of whom have actual senses of humor lol.

I went to graduate school at Michigan and opted to go to Vandy for med school, just for the weather. If you like seasons, you will find them in Ann Arbor. Spring may be a week long, and not arrive until mid-May and the summers can be hot and humid, but the summer nights are often very nice. September and October are terrific and your Saturdays should be spent at the Big House watching football games. November can be iffy, but after Thanksgiving, forget it for five or six months.

Another thing, for those who are into sports, Michigan hockey is a blast, but tickets can be tough to come by.

Ann Arbor, even with its slightly polar climate, is a great town. Don't let the weather deter you from Michigan if you are lucky enough to get in.

eep! the admissions tracker is totally freaking me out... i thought mid july wouldn't feel so late in this process but people are already getting interviews! time for the jedi mind trick to get my remaining recommenders to upload their files...

Ah so they wait for all the recommendations? My school doesn't send them until August/September, since all the LORs get compiled with their committee letter. I'm really disappointed :-(

yes i think so... most schools (but not all) don't consider your app complete and ready for review at all until all recs that you said would arrive have arrived.

Guess I'm gonna take the plunge and create a twitter account. Lol I always thought it seemed pointless, but I can't afford to miss out on any of these Michigan tweets.

I just hope they don't take my posts about last night the wrong way, and think I was agreeing with G Darn Pissed about what he was saying. I was just laughing at the tweets, and his responses to them!

you can just view the twitter page without having a twitter account

not that i'm obsessively stalking the twitter account or anything, but apparently they can review your app without LORs initially and they will rereview it when they get in. at least we'll have had a first look then, cookiemonster! yay 🙂

Reading their twitter page has officially made me kind of nervous to say anything 😛 "Hey SDN, we're watching you!" (of course, not actually a quote 😛)

Anyway, i'm a reapplicant. By the time I was complete last year, they had already extended something like 90% of their interviews. Here's hoping for some love this year. My whole family is from MI so it would be nice to a. be at a fantastic school and b. be close to them 🙂 Best of both worlds!

:luck:

Hey guys, incoming Michigan M1 here. It's completely fine to have an SDN account and read this. It really seems to have turned into group therapy for medical school applicants. Ruiz is an awesome guy who runs what I consider the best admissions office in the nation (my acceptance aside). His only concern seems to be the rampant misinformation and hearsay that spreads around SDN like wildfire. Read what you see here with a grain of salt and realize this for what it is; people here are rarely official sources.

Have fun and enjoy your application season! I really had a lot of fun!

Had a dream last night I got accepted here... post-wake-up was first the best thing ever, then so sad.

Haha I was SOOOO excited to read that. I celebrated with some cookies, like the cookiemonster that I am.

The UMich Twitter makes me want to apply. Every school should have a wonderful, slightly sarcastic, person who works so hard, amuses us all, and gives tidbits of excellent advice.

Plus, the admissions tracker is 👍👍👍 I definitely wish every school was so transparent.

So I'm pretty sure that UM has the nicest, cleanest, easiest to navigate med school page that I've seen. Not to mention the application tracker and transparency of admissions. I freakin love this school.

Wow. I wish I had seen the twitter earlier! Very cool and incredibly motivating. Looks like I'll be submitting my secondary tomorrow!

Just out of curiosity, did anyone else have formatting issues with the secondary essays? I submitted my essays in discrete paragraphs (with paragraph breaks) and they seemed to have been lumped together as one paragraph after submission...

It seems as if things have been on the quieter here (and there) - only ~20 interviews in the month of July so far...

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I've been obsessively checking my status every day and still under review.

Happened to me last year too. Don't worry, they see it with the paragraph breaks.

I had a meeting at U of M today. Basically they told me that if you don't have a 3.6+ (MAYBE 3.5...) science GPA don't bother applying, because they won't even get to the rest of your application.

I applied last year with a significantly lower GPA than that and was accepted. I start in like a week and a half. If other parts of your application really shine, you certainly still have a shot.

I think Michigan give applicants with a 3.8/35 automatic interview invites

My GPA was significantly below a 3.8, and I got a pre-secondary invite last year. My MCAT was high, but I really don't think the decision was based purely on numbers. I think the invite was extended based on a person reading my app.

Anyone receive any non-auto interviews yet?

Yes. Though, I've been complete for over three weeks now and I've heard no news. I do remember that when I was complete, a twitter from the day before stated 500 had completed their secondary app.

So does anybody know any more about the auto interview invite? I'm intrigued by this... So if you meet the numbers criteria, whatever they are, you get an interview invite based off your primary? And you don't wait to be considered complete with letters and a secondary? Thanks!

Someone can correct if I'm wrong but they take in account a multitude of factors for the auto-interview i.e. grades, MCAT, state residency, college attended, etc. If your application has enough of these components, you're automatically given an interview invite without having to submit your secondary until two weeks you interview.

It seems like everything is taken into account except the secondary. I believe there was a tweet about it a few weeks back...

i received a non-auto invite at the end of june pm if you have any questions

So I was just reading old posts from their twitter, and they say submitting by July 4th is a good target date?! I just submitted my AMCAS and it won't be verified for a month! Am I totally screwed here, since I won't be complete for so long?! Dang, I love this school and now I'm worried...

Is that submit primary or submit secondary??? I submitted 6/24, got verified on Monday 7/18 and received the secondary on Tuesday 7/19! I just started, plus I'm OOS, are the chips already stacked against me?

Thanks the the auto invite info. I have another question. I couldn't figure out from looking through the thread, but does UM always wait till you're verified to send out the secondary? Thanks!

pretty bummed, just checked my status and it said:

Application Screening Completed

Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience.

basically a rejection?

Look at last year's thread. At this point in the game, it doesn't bode well, but you aren't necessarily out of it yet.

Does Michigan give you "on hold statuses"? I figured they would let you know where you stand asap, as they tend to be the most open admissions office. I've been complete for some time now with no status change, and have competitive stats.

is it just me or does it seem like a hold is an indefinite rejection
