And you got wait listed?? That's nuts.

Really? So at the interview everything else is secondary? Basically, it comes down to how good of an interviewee you are?

Accepted off waitlist! Will be attending. 🙂

AspiringDoc I've got my fingers crossed for you! The list is moving fast based on my observations!

Congrats Monocles!!! I look forward to meeting you in July!

Thanks Monocles! : ) Guess it worked because I was just accepted off the waitlist as well and will be attending in the fall! Just have to scramble to find housing now!

Congrats!! Let me know if you don't get the housing packet in the next couple of days, PM me your email and I'll send it to you!

Hi elon! I just got my packet! Thanks for the offer though, I am also looking forward to meeting you in July! 🙂

It's not really that crazy. Monocles's numbers give him an automatic interview. That interview is the most significant factor in his ranking.

Agreed. It's not crazy. How many slots are available? 96, minus the 20 or so Bryant/Conely scholars, minus the 3-4 Early Decision Candidates already accepted equals just over 70 slots, right? Out of roughly 1700 applicants how many have a 3.9/31? Enough of them. Factor in all the other excellent combinations of 3.9/32 and 3.8/33 and 4.0/30 and ... you can easily fill a class many times over with great scoring students.

So how does one decide on which students to admit, wait list, and reject? It could be a strictly numbers game, which would be very easy and would save both the applicants and the school a lot of money. But if I were the school, I wouldn't just be looking for great students, I'd be looking for great physicians in wait...persons that not only have the ability to handle the academic rigors, but also possess the qualities I value in a physician that will someday care for me, my children, or my grandchildren.

Now, the truth is that individuals on the admissions committee value different attributes differently. Some like high MCAT scores. Other really love research. Still others value community service. Some like lots of shadowing. You can see why a well rounded application is a strength and plays to all the different personalities on the committee. I'm not saying that committee members are "single issue voters," but they weigh different experiences differently. It should be easy to understand that a General Surgeon and a Family Medicine Physician on the ADCOM might have different perspectives on what makes a great student physician. And you can also see how a great interview can really help and how a bad interview can really hurt your chances. The people who interview you present your file to the larger committee. If it goes well, they'll advocate strongly for you. If it doesn't go well, it's easy to get passed over in the sea of nearly 500 interviewees. In this way, the interview can indeed be the most significant factor in ranking, but it is not the only factor. Everything about your application is considered when decisions are made.

And this is also why people get accepted at one school and rejected by another school and wait-listed by a third. Subjectivity is inherent and makes it a very frustrating process.

It doesn't get better later on, either. Enter the National Resident Matching Program. Same song, second verse. Ugh.

True story: A guy in the class below me got pulled from the wait list on the last day. Someone dropped out during orientation and he was next in line. He had just accepted work at a gas station for the summer. If you get a call asking if you can be ready for medical school on Monday the answer is, "Yes!!" Just sayin', it's not over 'til it's over.

Good luck to those still on the wait list!

That's an amazing true story. I can't imagine how amazing that must have been for for your friend.

My surprise about Monocles being wait listed was because his numbers are great. His numbers are at or above Mizzou's averages.
