good question nado11. Im OOS, received and completed their secondary early on...end of July I think. haven't heard a peep since. and am I wrong when I say there's no way to check status updates with UNC? Just waiting on an email, correct? the online application page says nothing about status updates online...

Yes, waiting on an email. I've called 3 times already. The latter 2 they told me that they've reviewed my app just haven't made a decision yet, that I'll get an e-mail once they make a decision. Sooooo on edge! Top choice without a doubt.

thanks for the info! still no one accepted by dr. brice on here it seems, so I have hope

Along the same lines, did any of you who were accepted have Dr. Bright? It's a stretch for me to think he hasn't been able to attend a meeting yet, given his position, but
can't help grasping at straws...

I did. Not sure if he was my adcom, though. Dr vines was supposed to be my other one, but then Dr. Bashford stepped in when vines was paged. Not sure if dean trumps adcom...

I interviewed with Dr. Bright as well, but I haven't received a decision yet. I liked him.

...i remember someone saying that admissions would let everyone who interviewed earlier in fall know within this semester, can anyone confirm? I was going to call and ask but I called recently and don't want them to get annoyed of me haha

Thanks for that info, folks. I'm not sure if dean trumps adcom either. Pretty strong hand either way, assuming you're good, which you obviously were!

Ok...what other reasons can I convince myself are causing me not to be accepted yet...

1) He doesn't want to waste his time because he knows in his gut that I will attend Wash U in St. Louis
2) He is working to get me a full ride before letting me think about accepting the acceptance
3) He assumed I knew I was a shoe-in and didn't want to waste the dime to call me
4) He is afraid that I will steal some of his academic records from his old alma mater
5) He is concerned that my McDreamy looks will distract female classmates
6) He has decided I am exceptionally average and is more interested in higher performers at this point (I threw #6 in for comedic relief, as it obviously couldn't even approach reality)

And I agree, Dr. Bright was very nice.

If you want, I can call for you tomorrow.

Just send me your full name, DOB, and AMCAS ID to expedite the call. I am confident I will be able to get you an answer on whether you are admitted or not pretty quickly.

haha i hereby crown you funniest man in this thread

Completely meant to post here. In-state, sent secondary in 10/28, Interview invite Nov 21. AHHHH, so nervous about the interview...

I"m wondering the same thing! I submitted my re-app secondary on 10/31 and haven't heard anything yet. So nervous......

Complete for close to 6 weeks. Still no interview invite.
I hope one is coming soon.

Does anyone know how long the interview season is for UNC????

I am an OOS applicant and am hoping to hear something soon:xf::xf::xf:

The interview calendar goes until february 29th so you still have plenty of dates left, and there are lots of open spots!

I'm an OOS applicant and received an interview invite from UNC yesterday afternoon. I was complete on September 19.

Received my rejection letter today. Good luck to the rest of you still in the hunt.

Aviator, I was sorry to hear the bad news. This is a grueling process and lots of great applicants are rejected. What are your plans? Other MD schools? DO? Caribbean (sp)? Next year? Chin up. If it's what you want, keep at it! Definitely contact admissions to find what they perceived to be weaknesses too. I'm kinda scared to check my mail now. When did u interview?

man sorry to hear that aviator, were you in-state or out-of-state? ditto to the above post though, this process is way too subjective/random regardless of how strong of an applicant you are. good luck with everywhere else!

Hey Folks - Now that you're all a little further along in the process, I wanted to reiterate my offer to address any of your questions about UNC. I'm sure you can look back and find my original pros/cons post from a couple of months ago. Congratulations to those who have already received the good news. For those still waiting to hear, take some consolation. My wife (who I met in med school) interviewed on the last day and received an offer of admission shortly after. I'm sure there's still plenty of spots out there.

Thanks for making the kind and unselfish offer, Running Man. I for one don't have any questions. And I suppose in our politically correct world it wouldn't be appropriate to ask you to plant a device to play subliminal messages to my adcom.

AMCAS primary verified 11/11
Sent my secondary for UNC on 12/4.
Received an interview invite on 12/6
Scheduled interview for January

Honestly really surprised because I got everything in so late. Anyone else interviewing in January?

MCAT: 30P
GPA: 3.4
Postbac GPA: 4.0

OOS still no interview invite🙁

Are letters of interest a good idea for OOS applicants, or at this point is it just to late to receive an interview?

So I interviewed here on October 12 and still there seems to be no word. What is going on over there?

I just was offered an interview at Brody the other day, after having been complete since June or July. A couple of us interviewed (at UNC) in late September and are still waiting. No news is better than bad news, at least.

What are good apartments around the area? Where do most students live?

definitely true, in light of some people getting rejected already.

has anyone gotten the acceptance package in the mail? how long do you have to respond to the offer once you get the letter?

I'm coming up on 3 months since my primary was verified and they still haven't screened me in or out for a secondary. I've contacted them three times and received a generic "please be patient, we screen" response each time.

Is anyone else still waiting to be screened in/out for a secondary at this point?😕

At least I haven't been rejected yet!

Same here! I received a lot of attention on the West Coast but not in the East Coast. Last time I emailed them, which was about 2 months ago or so, they said that their admissions comm for OOS had not reviewed applications yet. I have not bothered to email them since I am assuming that as OOS we might have a much lower chance of being accepted if our qualifications are not "extremely" excellent.

Who knows, maybe we might be contacted in January. Good luck! :luck:

who did you call? I am also waiting for a secondary application.

I did not call anyone. I only emailed the admissions office and received a reply email from Joni Ann letting me know what I mentioned in my previous post. This was back at the end of October.

Im an OOS and got a secondary about two weeks after filling out my primary. However, I have not heard anything since and this was in early November.

OOS here too. Primary received in 9/21, secondary invite 9/23, secondary submitted 9/27. Haven't heard a word ever since!

don't worry it'll take a few days to receive and then you can pay the same day.. online. Then also send in another piece of paper. That piece will hold your spot and the 1 month deadline to hold a spot is not a rigid deadline. You can call and talk things out if you don't receive anything (highly unlikely).

it looks like those of us who aren't accepted/rejected next week are gonna be stuck waiting until next year...👎

based off of last year's thread i think so...2 weeks from monday we'll be into xmas break and then classes don't start back up until january

What are good apartments around the area? Where do most students live?

Apologies for the slow response. I've been out on the residency interview trail.

There are a number of good options around Chapel Hill. I will try to hit the highlights, but may oversimplify in the process. Of course, much of your decision about where to live depends on your budget and previous living situation. If you're used to living on your own, obviously you're going to spend more to maintain that lifestyle. If you're comfortable with roommates, you can find reasonably cheap places almost anywhere in town, including within walking distance of campus. Here's the most popular places:

1. McCauley Street Area (West of Campus)

This is a largely residential area without much in the way of traditional apartments. There are, however, a number of houses or rooms for rent in this area. It's an older area of Chapel Hill with big, beautiful trees and old, white houses. My wife rented a room in a house with four other girls for about $600/month. The big advantage is that you can walk to campus (and Franklin St) from many of these places. It gives you a good sense of being in a college town. The downside is that you're probably going to end up sharing with a number of other people and you probably won't have modern toilets, kitchens, etc and the upkeep of some of these places is variable at best. Still, it's a popular area.

2. Southern Village (South of campus, across 15-501)

This is another popular area with students, although I personally think it reminds me of the movie Pleasantville. It's one of these purposefully developed, mixed-use communities complete with its own grocery store and movie theater. It's on the busline and is probably only 10 minutes from campus. You can find most types of housing here, including apartments for rent and condos/houses for sale and everything is pretty new. I remember it being very, very expensive. Still a number of folks live here. I find it a little isolated from the community (and any sort of diversity), but that's just me.

3. Carrboro (Next town over to West)

There are all sorts of affordable living options in Carrboro. My wife and I really like the area (we don't live there) because there are lots of good places to eat and it's easy to walk around. A walk to campus is probably a bit much, but there are lots of students who bike to campus. It's at the same elevation as the university so there's no big hill that you have climb in the morning (which makes a difference in the summer heat). If you talk to anyone from the area, they will probably have a love/hate relationship with Carrboro. It is very distinctive. The population is very liberal and some might even say "hippie." A number of years ago, the town had its own currency and in the lead-up to the Iraq War, voted to impeach Bush. I don't know the name of any apartment complexes here, but it's not hard to find housing.

4. Meadowmont (East of campus out Hwy 54)

Meadowmont is very similar to Southern Village, only a little more connected to the town because of its location. I don't think as many students live here simply because the majority of the housing options are prohibitively expensive. I'm sure if you're willing to share an apartment you could probably do just fine. It's on the bus line and it probably takes about 10 minutes to get to the hospital. There's a Harris Teeter (grocery store), fancy ($$$) gym, and an ABC store, along with a few restaurants. I like to run through Meadowmont when I don't have time to make it to a more natural area. Like Southern Village, you're sharing the community with people who live in million dollar homes and retirees. Maybe that's fine for you. There's no doubt that it's nice.

5. Finley Forest (East of campus out Hwy 54 - Barbee Chapel Rd)

This is where I live. It's all 2- and 3-bedroom condos. Most places where built in the mid-1980s so they can vary quite a bit. Those that have been updated are great, while those that haven't now look pretty dated. I tend to think that Finley Forest and The Oaks are the cheapest places to live. You can rent a 2-bedroom (~1000sqft) for $900 - 1100 per month. It's on the busline, but I drove in my 3rd and 4th years because I often had to be at the hospital before the bus started running. With no traffic, it takes me 7 minutes from my front door to the hospital parking lot. Finley is absolutely filled with UNC graduate students, so it's a young community, but generally pretty quiet. Right now, there's a number of places for sale for very reasonable prices if that's your thing. In the spirit of full disclosure, I will be looking to rent out my place next year if we match outside of Durham/Chapel Hill so take my bias with a grain of salt.

There's a few other places you might look, but they are less popular (or I just didn't know anyone who lived there).

- Alta Vista (across the street from Finley on Barbee Chapel)
- Falconbridge (Hwy 54 closer to I-40)
- The Oaks (off Burning Tree Road)
- Glen Lennox (near 54/15-501 interchange)

You can also consider living in Durham, which is even more affordable than Chapel Hill, but the drive is a little longer. The problem is that you can't get student parking in your first two years, so you're pretty much committing yourself to driving to a park-and-ride lot, which only adds more time to your commute.

From those who have interviewed: My interview is in January. What should I expect?
31M/3.5gpa, bio/chem major w/ research, work experience (pharmaceuticals), lots of shadowing, bio lab teaching, science tutoring, emergency department volunteering. what do you think my chances are if the interview goes well?

There is a pretty convoluted calculation that you can use to estimate your probability of acceptance.

IS +1
OOS -1
GPA > 3.85 +0.25
GPA <3.4 -0.5
MCAT >35 +0.75
MCAT <30 -0.5

Add up the total, then slaughter an adult pig and study its entrails. If the aura of the entrails feels positive, add 0.5 to the total. Just kidding. You can't feel if the aura is positive.

If you're IS, I would say 30% chance. When was your file complete? My interviews were not intense but still felt like they were!
