On interview day, I think they said they accepted LORs and additional material up until December 31. Does that include current transcripts and letters of interest/intent as well? I know my registrar's office won't be open again until next year, so the transcript can't be sent out before then.

Has anyone written any letters of interest/intent yet, and should they be e-mailed or sent by snail mail? I interviewed in early December, and UNC's definitely my top choice. I'm not sure if I should send in a letter of interest/intent soon as in before the New Year. Thanks!

I'm applying next year and I have a question about LORs. How many total did you send to UNC? Do you have to send some with the primary and then more with the secondary?

Good luck the rest of this cycle everyone!

Here is whatI learned about LORs. Every school will provide this information on their website (not being a wise guy, fyi), and pay attention to that before submitting your AMCAS application to that school because at the point of submission, you will be asked to check the boxes for the LORs you want going to that school. And for the letters, I had my writers submit them to Interfolio and then they can all be sent to AMCAS from Interfolio. Also, if you apply to D.O. schools, they will also accept those same Interfolio letters, but the D.O. process requires you to submit the letters directly from Interfolio to each particular school, not through a central clearing house.

I think UNC only asked for 2, but I don't remember for sure. And there are no LORs sent with secondaries, they are all sent through AMCAS with your primary. You can add LORs after your original submission but I would avoid it if possible because I think sometimes that could delay your APP or at the very least, make the admissions office have to do more organizing after the fact. That last sentence is not based in fact, only my thoughts, btw.

Thanks! I know a few years ago the secondary from UNC required two LORs so I was confused if that was in addition to the two that they say are required on their website. Nice to know that all of them are submitted with the primary

i know there's one for the class of 2015 but i dont think there's one for our class yet...it'll probably show up at some point next semester?

Who creates these? The admissions staff? It'll be an awesome tool to help start looking for apartments, roommates, etc.

I don't know if anyone from the medical school ever peeks in here, but where do medical students typically live? I know parking is pretty awful, and I am familiar with the undergrad campus. Do most medical students live where UNC undergrads live or do they commute a bit more? Any and all information would be great!

I have a few friends who are M1's and M2's and most of them live in apartment complexes around the area and take the bus, but they say it's mostly complexes filled with grad students. I also know of one M3 who lives where I do now as an undergrad, and it's a 15 minute bus ride to the med school/hospital area. I feel like he's an exception though.

Thanks for the info! How often do buses run? Are they a 24 hour system, easy to use?

it really depends on the bus, but none of them are 24 hours. I think the latest they go is 9 PM. However, you can park on-campus after 5 PM or on weekends if you have a car. They are pretty easy to use though and you can check a live bus schedule on nextbus.com

Take a look back a couples pages. I (MS4) posted a summary of the most popular places in the area. If you have any questions about any place in particular, please feel free to let me know.

As for buses, they work great for your first two years, but they are a little harder to use (not impossible) during your clinical years when you're in the hospital.

I must have missed your post. Sorry that I re-asked a question (I hate it when people do that on here) I subscribe to this thread and must have just read over it. Thanks for the replies all!

there are quite a few night buses, though, and the p2p, which is only really useful if you live very close to campus.

What seems to be the waiting time for people to hear back from the commitee at this point?

How do most people get to the hospital during third and fourth year when the buses aren't running? oun mentioned that you drove, what was the cost of parking?

Also, for the general public, do you think the committee will be meeting again tomorrow?

It's not that the buses aren't running, it's just that when you've been in the hospital for 10-12 hours (or overnight for that matter), the last thing you want to do is wait 20 minutes for a bus. Can you do it? Absolutely. For example, when I did my neurology rotation, which has a significant outpatient clinic component, I rode the bus everyday. On the other hand, when I was in the MICU, which has Q4 overnight call, I drove every day.

In your MS3 and MS4 years, you can get parking in the Craige Deck, which is a five minute walk from the hospital. Right now, it costs about $45/month. All you have to do is let Student Affairs know which months you want parking. At most of the AHEC sites (Charlotte, Wake Med, Wilmington, etc) parking is free.

Hey Mr. Schwabe, I think they meet tomorrow, based only on last year's thread. I hope you and I get the call cuz we're due buddy!

Amen to that Brother. I haven't given up hope yet! Here's to some good news!

we have to pay for our own background checks. lame.

Are you telling me that you are complaining about that little fee for the opportunity to go to one of the best schools in the nation for one of the lowest tuitions (assuming you're in-state)? And if you're not in-state, it is still a fantastic opportunity. I normally do not speak out of anger, but I consider your opinion to be the most ridiculous and ungrateful words I have ever heard by someone I assume is intelligent. For the record, and to assist in your rebuttal,if you choose, no, I have not been granted admission.

lol ok. that's quite extreme. I haven't had to pay for the other background checks, so i thought it was weird. Wasn't that upset about it, but more letting everyone know. sorry to have angered you so deeply.

I hate it when people expose my mental instability that easily! 🙂 This may be committee Monday. I plan on using that as my defense in court. I will now step away from the keyboard. 🙂 thanks for bein' chill when I wasn't.

Did I ever mention that I really want to go to UNC? Just in case that hasn't bled through in my comments, I thought I would mention that for anyone who got a 3 or less on VR.

Considering the unstable psyche of people such as me, maybe threads should automatically split into accepted and "still waiting" crowds. Secret handshake and password, the whole works.

Woah, the lion's den....I am not super pleased about paying for the background check either. It is just another fee and hoop to jump through on the way to medical school.

Nothing here either. The waiting was rough tonight. I'm beat to hell from work so my nerves and body were already shot.

Accepted today via phone. In state female, reapplicant. Good luck to you guys!

Those of you that were accepted, when did you interview and who was your adcom if you don't mind me asking. Thanks!

Congratulations, LabLady! Can't imaginethe excitement!

To everyone else still waiting anonymously in radioland, may I impose my mental construct on to you for a moment? I forget this frequently, feel pain, and then am reminded...in my mind's eye, there is a plan, and things will work out the way they're supposed to...if not UNC, maybe elsewhere...if not this year, maybe next...if not now, maybe in 17 years...if not in 17 years, maybe you are needed to serve elsewhere.

third and fourth year students can purchase parking passes. Whereas first years students can't unless you kiss someone's ass for it. Second years students can also purchase parking while studying for the boards. somebody mentioned that its $45 a month which I think is pretty reasonable considering I've been paying about 35 a month at my university for the last 4 years.

I hate to say it, but i don't remember who my interviewers were. two males... sisler? sizzler? sitsler? and some other guy. it's all a blur.

I got the call Monday as well. I'm a reapplicant and did not even make it on their waitlist last year. Its a dream come true, and I would like to say for all the reapplicants and potential reapplicants out there, keep at it!

Anyone from the Nov 18th (or around there) interview receive any word?

G
Some of us would love to be worrying about paying for our own background check right now!

So did only reapplicants get in Monday?

Give em hell Kit! I've got your back.

Congratulations, DaBest! Wonderful perseverance!

Y'all better tell me congratulations if I ever get in cuz I'm starting to feel like the Wal-Mart greeter over here!

Does anyone know if UNC has the option to do first 2 years at Chapel Hill and then the last 2 in Charlotte through Carolinas Medical Center? I vaguely remember there being talk about this a year or two ago, or maybe I am crazy but anyone have details?

Rejected yesterday pre-interview (OOS) after receiving the secondary just days after my primary. Thought that meant they really liked me and I could get an interview. Too bad, I woulda loved the chance to go to UNC.

Yes, the Charlotte program was implemented two or three years ago. The majority of students who select this option are those with family ties to the Charlotte area. Almost all third year rotations are completed at CMC with the exception of Neurology, which is done in Chapel Hill. I have heard rumors that CMC might be opening a neurology rotation soon, but I don't know the timeline. If this is of interest to you, I would contact the Office of Student Affairs. They might also be able to put you in touch with a current student as I'm certainly not the best resource.

I am sure everyone has realized this by now but we are extremely lucky to have the opportunity to attend one of the top medical schools. I was recently accepted [as a reapplicant] and still cannot believe it happened for me. I know several of the students at UNC med from both undergrad and high school and I can safely say that they truly are some of the brightest minds I have had the pleasure of meeting. That being said, let's live up to the name and prestige of UNC and show the world what we can do.

For everyone waiting...NEVER LOSE HOPE like I did many times during this process.

Finally, can anyone let me know how long the wait between the phone call and the acceptance packet was?
