Some of those in the Facebook group are not in the class of 2016--having joined to announce open housing availabilities, etc.--so if you're gauging by that, then the number's a little lower still.

quick question: I have a 3.5 science and overall gpa (2.33, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 yrs) and an 12,8,Q,11 = 31mcat. The school says its avg gpa is 3.7 and at least 10's in every mcat section. Think it's worth applying to the school this cycle or holding off?
As for e.c. I have a good amount - but feel like schools can only overlook academic performance so much.
Any feedback is awesome thanks!

I'd say you can get in with those grades, but it's important to apply early in the cycle. You'd also want to cast a wide net so you can have many chances at opportunities to represent yourself well during the interview process.
Also, if you're holding off on applying, what are you doing in the year or two years off to improve your application? Building your application will only work in your favor in the end and many schools actually look at a gap year or two as an opportunity to mature. My understanding is that it's not unheard of to pursue non science/ medicine related interests, but if you feel that other portions of your application are lacking this would be a good opportunity to demonstrate your passion for the field.
Also, in terms of GPA the upward trend is most definitely in your favor. Be aware that you might be asked about the lower GPA in earlier years. Many schools provide you the opportunity to explain a poor grade in their secondary, but I don't think rochester was one of them (very brief secondary). It does come up in interviews somewhat frequently, so just be prepared.
Again, personal understanding of the app process, but hope it helps.

Ummm I'm not at my comp to pull it up but it was a few weeks. I think I got the acceptance in march, though...so they were still working on all that stuff. In the interim I'd make an appointment with your pcp and call urmc to see if they can fax you the health forms because I imagine that will be the longest wait. Also, if you haven't already I'd get yours/your parents w9s and tax return forms (they were 1040s for me). You'll need a signed and dated copy. You should also make a budget because you'll need this to compare when you get your financial aid package.

Thanks for all the info! They actually sent me everything I needed today, I left my phone for 15 minutes this afternoon and came back to 6 emails! I called today and got an appointment with my PCP for next week, and I sent my parents tax return forms ages ago when I filled out my financial aid forms. I'm glad to know I'm on the right track.
I' planned on waiting until I get my financial aid package to make a budget, actually, so I know what I have to work with. I have no idea what to expect in terms of financial aid. I'm not too optimistic about receiving any grants this late in the game, but institutional loans would be nice, at least. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. It would be nice to know soon so I can start seriously looking for somewhere to live. Luckily, the housing market doesn't seem as competitive as in Boston, where if you want to move in August but haven't signed a lease yet, you'll probably end up living in someone's closet.
I really appreciate your help! I'm getting super excited and nervous.

From the looks of it on Facebook, everyone keeps posting "hi! I've found a 3 bedroom and am looking for roomates! Contact me if you're interested.". Then someone else posts "hi, I'm looking for a place to live. Contact me if you have something open."
....I imagine it to be something like the cold war.. From old facebook posts it looks like everyone was just waiting for the other guy to shoot. Next thing you know we've got a bunch of med students living alone in 3 bedroom apartments....
Anyway...back to the actual point I was starting to make. Lots of people are looking for roomies, so you can hop on Facebook to see or check out the orientation site.

Haha, I think you're right. I actually already posted on facebook with no luck, but I'm in a somewhat unique situation, as I'm looking for a place for me and my boyfriend, who will not be an incoming med student. I know some people are wary of living with couples and non-med students, so maybe that's it. I also don't finish work until July 10th, so I can't go out to look until after that. I was starting to get a little nervous, but I guess the rental market isn't all that competitive. We'd rather live in a house than an apartment complex, but that would be okay if it came to that. It would just be nice to have things settled.
