Do MS1's typically engage in research during the year? I don't see how this would be possible with class from 9-5, unless I'm misunderstanding the schedule.

I was wondering the same thing. I'd like to be as involved as possible in research and other extracurricular activities, but with the full class schedule and what I'm sure will be a heavy study load, I think my expectations may be a bit naive and unrealistic. Can any current students weigh in on how much time they have in addition to that spent in class or studying (assuming you attend class consistently)?

So as far as our schedule goes, we only had 9-5 classes during anatomy, and even then that's only 3 days a week. Second semester you will have cell bio in the afternoons for about a month but that ends at around 3/4 usually. And from about February on you don't really have afternoon classes so your time is pretty flexible. I was able to work on 2 research projects during my first year (clinical chart review...so it's not as time-consuming as bench top research) as well as participate in plenty of extra-curricular activities.

Warning : First semester will be a time killer so don't try to do this first semester, but once Cell Bio wraps up you can find time to do these things. 😀

Awesome, thanks for the insight. With regard to your research, how did you get involved in a project? I've been perusing the website trying to identify faculty members conducting research in areas of interest, but I doubt I'll come into contact with many of them as an MS1.

Right. There's a Clinical Research Society here that periodically emails out about professors with case reports/clinical studies that need medical student assistance (grunt work). Just keep your eyes open for an email from them. Also, ophthalmology residents are required to do a project every year so that's how a lot of students get involved. You'll get an e-mail from the research coordinator in the department and it's usually just first come first serve.

Good luck!

Thanks! It sounds like it's not too difficult to get involved if you take the initiative. I can't wait! 👍

Have any of you guys or gals checked out the student health insurance that we can buy? I am trying to find information on rates for myself and my kids, but don't see rate info listed. Thanks in advance.

Besides the email that said we are required to have insurance, I haven't get any other info. I think you should call or email Wes Norred.

I called academic health plans. $1200 a year for the basic plan. Not bad. Dental is an additional $153 a year. If you add kids and a SO it gets expensive.
