Congrats guys! Wow, I'm surprised adcoms work on Sundays...

just got my interview invite on sunday for 9/10 😍

is it a good sign that I got the first interview date?

Guys just be patient. UTSW has a decently long interview season. Just because you have not been invited for an interview yet DOES not mean that you won't be. It also DOES NOT put you at any sort of disadvantage for getting in. There are people in our class that interviewed both early and 'late' and got in during pre-match. UTSW also takes a large majority of their class from the waitlist so take that into consideration during this process as well. I know it seems like everyone with 'decent' stats has already gotten an interview (especially looking around on SDN) but remember that the admissions process is about more than stats and you also have no confirmation that all of these people are being honest.

That being said if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Congrats on the interview offers so far!

I'm a current student at UTSW, feel free to PM me or ask any questions here...I'll be happy to answer them 🙂.

Undergrad stats:
- in-state
- 3.7c/3.6sGPA
- 36 MCAT
- primary submitted very end of July, secondary end of August
- interviewed mid-October
- pre-matched November 15

Hey I submitted my apps about the same time (in fact, just submitted secondary). My question is that since my interview in on 9/10, will they have processed my secondary by then? If not, I can reschedule, kind of nervous about it being my first interview anyways :scared:

I wouldn't worry about it, they probably looked at your secondary if you got an interview invite...
Their secondary wasn't very lengthy anyways. 👍

I submitted my secondary YESTERDAY, my interview invite was on 8/13.

Don't worry about it - I got my interview invite before I got my secondary application confirmation anyways (like some other people have this year). Your interviewers will have time to get the pertinent files, but it's always a good idea to bring a full copy of your application anyways, including the secondary. Good luck!

Any advice on how to handle UTSW interviews if you have relatively light research experience? I am a teensy bit worried...

Be prepared to talk up the research experience that you DO have. Be coherent, be concise, and be knowledgeable about the research that you did (background, problem statements, applications, etc.).

If you're doing research right now, or if you plan on doing some research in the future, be sure to mention that.

Don't be too worried about research experience. There are people in our class with very little research experience and those that abhor the thought of doing more research (I am pretty sure they did not come so strongly anti-research in their interview however). If you haven't done much be honest about it, but also be honest if its something you might want to do in the future. Word of advice: interviews are very good at sniffing out BS.

So UTSW has this whole 2-day deal...first day tour, rounds, etc., and interview not until Day 2. Obviously conservative suit for the interview, but what are you guys thinking for the first day? I don't want to be too casual, but don't want to wear a whole second suit if I don't have to....8 days until my interview ahhhh!!!

Do you have to be complete (as in turn in your secondary and everything) to receive an interview invitation here? 😕

I was just offered a mid October invite. However, when I go in to confirm my date, I had the option to move it all the way up to 09/10! Has anyone else moved their date up? Do you risk losing the date you were originally assigned if you do this? Thanks!

business casual on Friday is good. Wear a tie if your a guy 🙂 I remember some guys/gals wore suits in the morning but were really uncomfortable/overdressed in the afternoon.

Hey!

I was actually in your exact same situation! I went ahead and moved it up to 9/10 and it now says I am confirmed for that date. I hope this is true cuz I really wanna go sooner because I have a lot of exams around the October 15th date I was given. I emailed the admissions to make sure, but I think everything should be fine if you go ahead and change it.

I moved my dates as well. On the my Interview status page it now says that my assigned dates are 10/7 and 10/8. Then below it, it says to press the appropriate button to confirm or change the date. However, there is only one button to change the date. Do the assigned dates mean that it is confirmed?

just got invite for 10/24 (~two months early...).

So shirt and tie for friday rounds and no scrubs? I always had scrubs on shadowing, and the rounds are going to be...kind of like shadowing?

No scrubs. The rounds are more like showing off some of the hospitals affiliated at UTSW and giving you a glimpse what you will be seeing as a 3rd/4th year than actual shadowing. After rounds you will have lunch then spend the rest of the day interacting with administrators. You would look like a tool if you wore scrubs. And you would probably be the only one.

so dress shirt and tie? no suit necessary?

correct. some people do wear a suit, but most don't. You just want to look cleaned up and presentable. you can save the suit for your actual interview day.

Yes, shirt/tie is fine, and definitely no scrubs...it's not so much shadowing as kind of touring the hospital. I wore my suit jacket on Friday too and definitely felt a little overdressed compared to everyone else.

Any input from ladies who have attended the Friday rounds? I have a second suit prepared for that day, but I think I'd much rather wear a sheath dress + jacket so I don't swelter.

Also, how much of Friday is spent indoors vs outdoors if you attend both the morning and afternoon activities? Thank you!

A dress and jacket should be fine as long as its tasteful. Most of your time will be spent indoors, the only time outside would be walking to and from various activities. Fair warning, it can be a little chilly inside, so if you get cold easily you may want to have a jacket or something since you will be inside for most of the day.

It's been a while since I interviewed (I'm a 4th year) but as big as a research place UTSW is, a lot of students didn't do research before they got here. Many might jump in during their 4 years here but it's not a huge deal. Interviewers won't peg you down and say "Why didn't you do more research?" Most interviewers here are just trying to have a casual converstation about anything that sticks out in your application and will often use the time to make sure you're a normal person that can talk to patients. Some will use the time to give you their advice for this time in your life.

I didn't do research, neither did my roommate, or most of my close friends here.

Everyone just breathe! You'll do great. As high stats as UTSW has, it's not that EVERYONE has to be 4.0/41. I'm an URM, was 3.4/34N, some extracurriculars and pre-matched at UTSW along with 3 other med schools. My sister was 3.9/27, some extracurriculars and pre-matched at 6/6 of the med schools in Texas.

BEST ADVICE IS JUST BE PERSONABLE. 👍

Anyone else interviewing on 10/15 and attending the Friday activities? I'm really excited about this interview, and I hope to meet some cool people there.

For those of you who are curious about timing/stats: 3.6c, 3.5s, 37, transmitted 7/21, supporting docs 8/10, secondary 8/24, invite 9/2. There's probably not too much predictability in when you receive an invite, so I wouldn't use this as a guide. Good luck everyone!

Hey Guys,

I'm a current student at UT Southwestern. Just thought I'd give you a preview of what to expect on a typical day of school here....

hahha thank you, that was awesome! the end made me lol'ed a lot :roflcopter::roflcopter:

Interviewed here on 9/10, absolutely blew me away. Unfortunately, it was my first interview and I think my nervousness showed (answers that went off on a tangent without fully answering the question).

Anybody know how much weight the interview is given? My friend said hardly any one with over a 34 and 3.8 that's a Texas resident gets rejected if they interview this early, any truth to this?

Definitely freaking out because I honestly can't imagine myself going anywhere else, it's gonna be a long wait until Nov. 15th :scared:

Don't worry! They expect you to be nervous and understand! The faculty are very kind. I thought my interview went fine but not great (and definitely included some tangents) and I got in pre-match and a scholarship to boot.

I don't know how much weight the interview has, but I always had the impression you could be really really really fabulous and blow them away or really really really terrible and screw yourself over but if you were just about average it wouldn't make much of a difference.

I'm glad you liked the school. I'm a second year now and still love it here. Feel free to ask me any lingering questions you might have! I love applicants and usually host before interviews (not this week cuz we have a killer test fri) so I'm glad to answer anyone's questions or tell you more about the school!

Good luck!

Don't worry!!! My first interview here was a disaster imo and I had a 32, 4.0 and still got in 🙂

Thanks, hopefully it didn't turn out as bad as I thought. A pre-match acceptance would be nice :xf:

Did they let you know about your scholarship offer before you filled out your fafsa? Or at the same time as the pre match offer?

It was part of my acceptance letter (the hard copy not the email) months before I filled out FAFSA. I got grant money later too as part of my financial aid packet (unexpected) so don't get down if there's no scholarship, there still might be money on the way.

Ah. What are the current thoughts on the Friday clinical rounds / dinner? Looks like I might not be able to make them for my interview data, so I might have to make them up.

I didn't make the clinical rounds b/c I didn't want to miss class, but the dinner in the afternoon was nice. You get to see some of the north campus, which you won't see on the tour on Saturday. Additionally, you might hear some repeat information on Saturday morning , but the presentations about UTSW given on Friday will be much more in-depth with more time for questions. If you can't make it, I wouldn't worry too much... but if you can I think it definitely adds to the experience.

Sorry if this has already been posted but where can we check to see if our app is complete? I can only find the one about interview status but none about if it's complete or not.
