The admissions director said during the information session that people who interviewed on 11/12 would not be reviewed in time to pre-match on 11/15. He said Thursday was the earliest you can expect.

oh god what have you done... Will frantically check my email at midnight now .

So what do we do now that we have offers? Are we supposed to call and tell them we accept?

I don't know. I did email Ms. McLane and tell her I accepted and she said they would send more info soon. I also asked her if I could start today and she said no. 🙁

Oof. I just saw somewhere (well, the 2009 thread) that UT-SW sends out about 2/3 of its total acceptances in this early batch of pre-matches. I sure hope that's not true. :xf:

That is true based on the interview. I think they said they sent out 300-400 total (can't remember the exact number) and 230 of those were between mid-November and mid-December.

Hey I was worried about this too, but you definitely have plenty of time to do stuff. First year we went out most Fridays and Saturdays, and we hung out all the time. At the beginning of the year it'll be tough with anatomy taking up a lot of time, but once its over, I was at the gym almost every day, no problem.

Second year is a little tougher, I still go out at least once every week usually, and the gym like 3-4 times a week. I'm actually very surprised with the amount of free time I have, I was not expecting to have this much.

I guess its hard for me to compare because I haven't been to any other schools, but I've found the workload to be fairly manageable, so you'll definitely be able to find time to keep doing the things you love to do. 😀

You absolutely have time to have a life. First semester you have the most commitments because anatomy lab goes until 4pm 3x/week. First semester is also pass/fail however, so that is the time to go out a ton and get to know your classmates. After anatomy ends you have a lot more free time (also because a lot of people stop going to class after the first semester). You have histology lab in the first half of the spring, but its not as long as anatomy lab and is not mandatory (pretty much nothing is ever mandatory besides colleges and exams). Second year is pretty predictable: 3-4 hours of lecture/day, small group (lab or pathology cases) about once/week, a test every 3 weeks like clockwork.

You will definitely study a lot, but there's still plenty of time to have fun and deans really push this too. If you aren't working out or going out you are going to start hating school pretty quickly.

Maybe some other students can chime in with their personal experiences--I am pretty boring so I'm not a good example. I do take about 1-2 nights off per week where I don't study at all (either because I'm staying home snuggled up with my tv or because I'm going out) and I also play some IM sports. I also have had time to travel a lot, either driving home or flying to visit college friends (5 trips this semester).

This guide was written ~4 years ago I think, so don't read too much into every tiny detail, but I think overall it can help you get a better idea about what classes/life is like.

Thanks for the helpful replies. Also, that guide is amazing.

HAHA. I'm excited, but I'd rather have a summer of traveling than start now!

Congrats to everyone who got acceptance offers!!
I know it's pretty late in the game, but I just received an interview invite today for 12/10 =]. Hopefully I'll be able to join the rest of yall next year! :xf:

Hello everyone. I'm interview at UTSW this weekend. Any advice besides don't be nervous and be yourself?!

Hello everyone. I'm interview at UTSW this weekend. Any advice besides don't be nervous and be yourself?!

The interviews are pretty laid back, so don't fret there. Dallas traffic can be challenging. So if you are not staying very close I would try to be early. UT Sothwestern is off I-35 and that is one of the most traveled roads in the morning. They also have signs directing you were to go once you get on campus.

Good Luck!

Anyone know if there is a Facebook group for UTSW 2016 yet? May be too early for that, but I thought there may be others (like myself) who are matriculating here for sure already! Just slightly excited!!

I'd say 1. It's okay to be nervous! It's VERY NORMAL. To combat your nervousness, I'd say be confident in yourself, your abilities, and your answers. 2. Have a pre-planned idea of all you want the interviewers to know about you. If you know this, then you can pretty much guide the conversation to fit into what you've planned to talk about. 3. It's OKAY to NOT KNOW the answer. I told the interviewer at certain questions that "I not too familiar with that subject/topic" and it clearly didn't affect me negatively. Just be truthful and follow up with something you DO know. (Example convo: Interviewer: "what are some ethical issues you've come across lately concerning neuroscience?" Interviewee: "I'm not too well versed in the specifics of neuroscience but I did take a class dealing with this subject and in particularly loved ____ and ____") 3. When it's over, don't assume. I heard of ppl who thought their interview went well and didn't get it and those who thought it went aweful and got in.

This is how I navigated ALL my interviews and it payed off! I got in! UTSW class of 2016 🙂 Pray your interview goes well!

Anyone receive the formal letter yet? I'm curious as to what scholarships they're giving out.

I didn't get a letter today either. : (

I did however get a letter from UTMB of rejection from the MD/PhD program.

Kinda figures 🙄

Dang sorry to hear that! Didn't know you were going for MD/PhD

It would be unreal. But I'm just going to expect nothing because just getting accepted is enough for me and I don't want to be disappointed by no scholarship. Are the scholarships all merit based or do they consider need as well?

Lol yeah. I just saw your MD apps page. I've been working to update mine.

You are a giant among men sir!! Congrats on all the acceptances!
Officially jealous about the A&M acceptance. 😀

Really just going to a TX school is like being on a scholarship because its so cheap.

I don't think they give out need based until they get your fafsa, and i think the earliest you can start that for 2012-2013 is february.

Yeah, that makes sense

Tell me about it, I went from thinking I wasn't going to get in anywhere this cycle to expecting a UTSW scholarship. It's funny how greedy I've become after an acceptance.

Come on southwestern, show me some love.
did anybody that prematched interview on Oct 29th? or does anyone know of someone that did?

Congrats on all who got in. I am still hoping for an interview but my hope is starting to fade for this cycle. +pity+

Same here. I just heard back from san antonio about interviewing last week....I had my fingers crossed for southwestern but....its getting kind of late

So I totally was against going to UTSW, and the interview weekend totally changed my mind. Totally could see my self there. If I don't get in I won't be heartbroken, but wow, what a amazing school.

Got an interview invite to UTSW today for Jan 7th.

Any interview vetrans got tips or advice for the Friday and Saturday sessions and interviews???

ALSO: It says we can bring a guest to the non-interview/non-clinical-rotations sessions. Is this just meant for significant others? Or is bringing a sibling, parent, or friend okay too?

[Stats are on my MDApps profile.]

Congrats
I went with a friend so it should be ok.

The Friday session could drag depending on which clinical rotation you get paired with, but I personally had a good time, and I found the entire thing to be very enlightening.

The interviews are generally "conversational" (they try to emphasize this point before they send you off to interviews), but be prepared to answer questions relating to healthcare/ethics. It just depends on what type of interviewer you get.

for you guys that got in, how well did you do on your MCAT?
im applying next cycle and am wondering what kind of score is UTSW material,

I know of people who received interviews with 30-31s on their MCAT. Don't know the distribution for acceptances, though (the average MCAT for matriculants is ~33-34).

I got accepted this application cycle with a 27Q so don't get stuck on the "you need a 33+ to get an interview" thing that everyone seems to say. 🙂 ..although OF COURSE the higher it is the greater your chances. Shows that there's WAY MORE to getting in than scores...

So I submitted my tmdsas application 6/02, but I never finished the utsw secondary because I didn't think there was a chance of me going there. However, I just got an II for jan 7th! I dunno if there has been a mistake because the deadline for the secondary has already passed...Will they still take the secondary if I submit it?

I wish I was URM.

Yes. I didn't even look at the secondary before I got my II.

oh wow thanks! I thought the deadline had already passed, but I am not going to complain.

Sure. My interpretation of the Oct. 1 deadline was that it only applied to the TMDSAS application, and not the secondary, but I could be wrong.

Since you received an invite, I'm assuming you're in the clear (as long as you remember to turn it in before your interview ). As always, when in doubt, ask the admissions office.

I wish I was URM.

I didn't say I was an URM 🙂 ...like I said, there ARE things a bit more important than scores....clearly (the other 5-6 pages of your app. , essays, interviews, etc)
