Has anyone from the OOS waitlist (prior to today's new waitlisters) been accepted/re-reviewed? Haven't heard anything from UVM in forever. Letters of interest don't seem to be doing much.
Congrats!!! I had seen earlier in the year that they accepted people a few hours after waitlisting but didn't know they'd do it again!
I'm curious about the letter you sent. Was it a letter of intent in that you'd go if you were admitted. Or was it an update? Sorry that question is really specific, you can PM me the answer if you feel more comfortable?
How long was your letter of interest? Did you go into a lot of detail about why you want to attend UVM? Several people have told me letters of interest can simply be a few sentences saying that the school is your top choice and that if you gain admission, you will go there in the fall while others have said it needs to be a lot more than that. you got an interview so it seems your letter worked for you and I just wanted to know if you have any advice! Thanks!YES! I wrote in a letter of interest and literally two days later, got an interview invite 🙂 i'm waitlisted now and the wait continues to torture me...ugh.
ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!! So Stoked!! I interviewed on 10/13. OOS Waitlist on 10/21. Accepted 01/13 🙂 WOHOOOOO!!! I wrote about 4 letters of interest between October 13 and now and they seemed to have worked 🙂 I think UVM wants to see continuous interest in students that they really want to go to UVM.Has anyone from the OOS waitlist (prior to today's new waitlisters) been accepted/re-reviewed? Congrats to all the WLs and acceptances!

Same here :/
This just sucks so bad.
Congrats to DrMarty though!!

thanks nucleophilic 🙂 appreciate it!indeed - congrats DrMarty! 🙂
is there a match list available for uvm in 2011? for people who have been to the school, how do you like it?
To the people who have written letters of interest: To whom do you address it? Director of Admissions, Dean, Office of Admissions?
Also, snail mail or email?
Thanks!
I'm wondering the same thing. Has a pre-interview letter of interest resulted in IIs for other SDNers? I have been pooled for a few months now.

Thanks guys, looks like a great match list. Im from cali, i was just wondering what are the chances of me coming back to cali from vermont
Also if you had to chose between EVMS and UVM where would you go? I interviewed at both places and liked them both a lot. I was reading somewhere that UVM was ranked top 5 primary care schools in the nation a couple years ago, but now it dropped to #20 why do you think that happened?
also do most schools get a month to study for STEP 1's?
thanks!
your chances of going back to the west coast for residency are excellent, especially as you are coming from there to begin with. the #1 state represented at UVM is California, behind only Vermont, so yours is not an unusual situation.
the explanation for the ranking is simple: a lower proportion of grads are going into primary care specialities. 30% of the (stupid) USNews methodology for primary care is determined solely by this metric. more people have been matching into fields like anethesiology, surgery, and emergency in recent cycles. last year's class had more EM matches than IM (very unusual for any med school). that is not to say that the support for primary care here has been diminished in any way, but only that the trend for student preferences the last couple years has been into other areas.
we have more than one month for Step 1, that's an artifact of the publicly available academic calendar. January of your second year is a part-time course that is meant to accompany board study (it is not a prep course, but rather a PBL-style small group format intended to prepare you for clinical thinking and prompt you on concepts that you might need work on). This is followed by the dedicated Step study period, which is six weeks long, but few of us take that much time. Then your clinical year starts in mid-March, which gives the benefit of ending the following March, with more time than at most other schools for electives before submission of residency applications.
Thanks for this! I don't think this was mentioned during my interview day, but what's the average step I score?
Yay! 😀complete july 6th, invite this morning.
Question for any current students who are looking at the thread: How helpful is the financial aid office at UVM? The cost is obviously daunting, especially for someone who's thinking of going into primary care, so I just wanted to make sure I'm going somewhere that would be able to give me good guidance on loans and all of that other rather complicated and pesky financial stuff.
yes. contact them, they are super cool people.
Your FAFSA needs to be in ASAP, but the good news is that FAFSA is all you need, there is no institutional form. The deadline is March 1, make sure you get it in by then, even if it has to be estimated numbers!! you can update it later, but they are serious about the deadline - this goes for waitlisted people too (make sure UVM gets your FAFSA by 3/1 even if you haven't been accepted yet.) Make sure you include parental information, otherwise you won't get need-based grant aid.
If you are in-state, your VSAC form needs to be in ASAP as well.
gravitywave, does Vermont give need-based GRANTS? if so, do you also know what other schools do (besides like the top 20 on USNews, I know they're loaded).
they do, to both IS and OOS students. since pretty much everyone is putting -0- for personal income, who gets them has a lot to do with parental resources, hence you need to include them on the FAFSA. there are a couple of need-based loan programs as well, with very generous terms compared to Staffords. these go through FAFSA as well. it's a very straight-forward process here, especially since you really don't have to do anything beyond what you are doing for other schools - just add UVM to the FAFSA.
I can't comment on any other specific places that do need-based grants. In general I would say to apply everywhere, for everything they recommend on the school's financial aid page, even if you haven't been accepted yet. I swear, you never know what can happen. I was presently surprised by my fin aid package here.
many places don't care whether or not you've been accepted yet - if you were accepted in June but didn't meet the March fin aid deadline, you might be looking at a lot of loans that you might not otherwise have had. apply early and often, just like med school the previous summer.
how would you guys choose between EVMS, GWU and UVM?
thanks
After any differences in money? Location, location, location. (For me that would make it UVM>EVMS>GWU, but YMMV.)
For the same reasons (location, location, location) I'd choose the opposite. It all depends on what you want--city, rural, etc.
By looking at nearby ski resorts. 👍how would you guys choose between EVMS, GWU and UVM?
accepted off the waitlist last week! Vermont was definitely in my top 5!
NMonte82, I think your rationale makes a lot of sense 🙂 Just keep sending in letters of interest, calling the office and expressing your interest to them. Thank you for the warm words. I hope the best for you as well!! 🙂Congrats! Looking at your MD Apps page, you interviewed in very early October, so it safe to guess that you were placed on the OOS waitlist in late Oct?
If so, that would mean that those who recently posted about about acceptances from the OOS WL (DrMarty & doctorc88), were also originally reviewed and added to the list on the same date (10/21). Maybe that indicates that the admissions committee went back and re-reviewed the applicants from that group, and at the next meeting will re-review waitlisters from the subsequent group (late Nov WL'ers) along with earlier WL'ers who didn't get in this round. ...Just spitballing in an attempt to rationalize the process and remain calm while continuing to play the waiting game. 😛
P.S. Since I haven't said it yet: Congrats Dr. Marty, I know from previous posts that you've been anxiously awaiting the good news that you just received! Congrats to doctorc88 as well! Hope to be joining both of you in the future, UVM is still my top choice school.
Thank you! I didn't know that UVM had so much money. My state school pretty much told me they don't care and won't look at my parental info even if I give it on the FAFSA; this is b/c they don't give GRANT aid to anyone except URMs, some OOS lucky ones, and people whose parents make <30K.
I'm a little confused about this statement "there are a couple of need-based loan programs as well, with very generous terms compared to Staffords. these go through FAFSA as well." Are these specific to UVM or can you give me a few examples I can search up?

i'm not sure, BUT, when you fill your FAFSA out, you have to make sure to put in all the schools that you haven't heard back from (whether you are waitlisted, accepted, or haven't even interviewed there), just to be on the safe side.Hey guys, i had another quick question about how the fafsa works. Say you turn in your fafsa but then you get accepted to school after you turn it in, is there some way to update the fafsa with the schools code?
thanks
Same here. Does anyone know if they have gotten to the November files yet?"Please note that the preliminary review of your file may take 6-8 weeks"
after three months Im beginning to worry... :|
