Interviewed Thursday Jan 26, got the acceptance letter the following Monday!

Out of state applicant from Nebraska, 3.93/36.
Just booked my flight to go to the admitted students weekend, very excited about it!

I didn't complete my UVA Secondary until the very last day it was due (I think Dec. 15th). I got an email inviting me to an interview less than a week later, so they definitely read them and decide very quickly on what to do. I think I really got their attention with an application from Nebraska -- I think you people in bigger states like Florida and California have a much harder time.

Best of luck to anyone going in to interview. Make sure you know how they teach at UVA before you accept the interview, it's pretty different:

Hey acceptees!
Has anyone started looking for housing yet? I'm debating between paying a little more for my own apartment or getting a private suite in one of the nicer places like Towne Court or John Street Place.

Anyone got any suggestions?

It really depends on if you want to live by yourself or not. Personally, I think it would be a little too boring to have a whole apartment to myself, but some people like it. Once you figure that out, then you can decide on a specific place/how much you want to spend, etc.

Btw, towne court is a great place to live. When you have your own room+bathroom, it's pretty much like having your own apartment anyway.

Do you know about how much it costs to live at towne court? How much do people pay otherwise? I've heard about $500/month to have your own room somewhere, but I'm not sure on that. Is it true?

Rent at towne court is $599 + $100 utility fee (includes electricity, water, internet, etc). Total = $699. The apartment is a 2 bedroom/2 bath (or 3 bedroom/3 bath), but you sign an individual lease so you are not responsible if your roommate doesn't pay rent. It is on the pricey side for cville, but you get what you pay for.

$500 a month is pretty typical for average places in cville. A place like 1800 JPA rents for about $900 for a 2 bedroom/1 bath + utilities. This would average out to like $550 a person within walking distance. Just note that some of the units are renovated and rent for slightly more $.

Of course there are plenty of other places to live. I would check out brac.com for a thorough listing: http://brac.com/apt_list.cfm?type=Small

Just make sure you have google maps open when searching through the listing to find out the distance from med ed.
 
There are also a ton of people living in Ashtree, Oxford, and Cambridge Square along Madison. We easily fill up a bus every morning with just the rising third years.

Thanks for providing so much detailed information! It's really helpful to someone thinking of moving in from out of state. All of you current students on this thread have been so awesome. 🙂

the second look stuff will come soon. they only just sent out their finalized schedule of it.

to those who are looking at housing, you should check out the fb group!! we've asked a few questions on there about housing already and the students have been so helpful. ^^

I'm excited to go back and scope things out in a little bit more detail, which reminds me, I need to book a hotel. Anyone have any suggestions for a place that's close to the med school?

The Cavalier Inn is pretty much on the campus. I stayed there the night after my interview. It was nice enough, and I got a decent price on Expedia. They were also the only hotel I stayed at on my interview travels that had a printer that actually worked.

I stayed at the Hampton Inn for my interview. I stayed in a lot of sketchy places along the interview trail (didn't we all? :laugh:), so I thought I'd treat myself. It was a little pricier than the others, but they have a (free!) shuttle that takes you to and from the airport, which made it worth it imo. Saves the expense of a taxi, that's for sure. They also have a free breakfast buffet. It wasn't glamorous food or anything, but it fixes the problem of having to go scouting for food in a strange area sans your daily caffeine fix. If you have an AAA membership, that drops the rate a decent amount as well.

There will be student hosting offered for that night...I wouldn't waste money on a hotel. Check the Class of 2016 facebook group for more info.

Just a heads up: you guys should probably use the facebook group to communicate about details of the event/housing/misc. communication as opposed to SDN (nothing against SDN of course but you realize that anyone can read it and not everyone reading has been accepted/is attending UVa).

A question on Facebook etiquette: if you hold multiple acceptances and haven't yet decided where you will be going, is it rude to join a Facebook group?
 
The cavalier inn is all booked up that weekend, the law school is having an admitted students weekend as well.

i think its fine. just don't try to find any roommates because it would be terrible for a roommate to not show up on move in day lolz

No. There are a number of upperclassmen in the group to help answer questions and such, and they can be useful sources of information. Just remove yourself if you decide to go somewhere else.

Which is a decent point as well - you'll want to be within walking distance, or within walking distance of one of the bus lines - in practical terms, there's no parking at the school.

Oh, and, personally, I'd suggest avoiding the "Corner/underclass/frat" area - 14th, etc - while the location's not bad, it's probably a bit too noisy for most.
 
interviewed on wednesday 2/22. Can't believe they said they'd be mailing out the decisions today. Probably expecting WL this late in the game.

At the financial aid meeting during interview day, they told us scholarships are rare and didn't give a very defined timeline for when they come out.

Congrats! If you don't mind saying, what region of the U.S. are you located? I'm in PA but didn't receive any letter today. Either way, I think I may have interviewed with you, nice job!

I'm in NC. I think the most general rule of thumb for mail is:

1 day + 1 day for every state in between (in your case, MD/WV probably combines). So, you should probably get some news tomorrow?

So pretty much the only scholarships that are given out are based on financial aid/need. I received my award on April 18th last year, but the emails will likely be sent during that week (not everyone gets it on the same day). If you get your material in on time, you will be notified before May 1st of your aid.

Also realize that qualifying for financial aid for medical school is a lot different than qualifying for aid for college. Although you may have not gotten much aid in undergrad, you are more likely to qualify for aid here since the cost of attendance is over $62k instate and $72k OOS. This is (sort of) a good thing because the higher the COA, the more likely you are to qualify for aid/scholarship.

If you want details about the aid process (that are not already answered by the financial aid office), feel free to message me. I know this was a stressful part of the med school app process for me because my aid factored heavily into my decision to attend UVA. For others, it didn't matter at all because they weren't relying on aid.
 
Is anyone who is interviewing on Feb 29th staying at the hampton inn? If so, care to grab a drink nearby?
 
This isn't true. I can't speak to how many, but there are non-need based scholarships awarded.

As OrangeandMaroon said, there are definitely merit scholarships, although they vary in how much they're worth. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their merit awards has some sort of qualifier attached - from a certain area, of a particular heritage, etc. But there's nothing you can apply for specifically - at least, of UVa awards... definitely apply for any other awards of which you're eligible (the financial aid office does a good job of sending out national, regional, etc scholarship opportunities).

SMD14 started our 3rd year this week, and I'm liking it a lot so far. Good luck with any remaining interviews, decisions, or matriculation choices!
 
Accepted!!! Took a few days for the letter to reach the west coast. So excited! This was one of my favorite places.
 
My parents got my rejection letter in the mail yesterday. Would have at least liked an interview, but I'm happy with where I'm going.

Accepted to UVa and very excited!! Interviewed last friday, got the letter Tuesday.
Loved the school and the people : ) Students at UVa seemed genuinely happy (no fake smiles or sales pitches).

Good luck to those still waiting and to those who didn't get the news they wanted, good luck with your other options!

Also, are there any current first or second year students out there who can comment on the new "next generation" curriculum?
