Hmmm - hard to say. Things that come off the top of my head: One of our professors does theoretical statistical research. Like studying new statistical tools. But it is literally on the level of modern astro-physics. Something I cannot fathom. :shrug:


For ID: Lots of Infectious Disease research opportunities. As far as "cognitive errors in diagnostics" - I am not certain. I bet there is someone in Radiology or Pathology dealing with inter-observer reliability studies.

Well, then, if you interview I would suggest you get in touch with Dr. Hull
Dr. Alan Hull, M.D./Ph.D.

He also has a Ph.D. in Education and was faculty in education before returning to medical school. Another proud non-traditional student from Case. (Case coined the term "bent arrow" - people who didn't take a "straight path" to medical school - I am a proud Bent Arrow). He is our Dean of Curricular Affairs - and was very instrumental in the development of our school and is very involved to this day. He is also a very active researcher in graduate medical education:

Yes - us medical students are ask to consent to participate in research into the education of medical students training to do research. Can you parse that sentence? 😛

Yea... going to have to go with that's not a guarantee. II from UP earlier in the week when I was at work, nothing from CP.

Not a guarantee is correct. Received both IIs, a week or two apart.
 
They reworked my UP to be the day after CP!

Does anyone know how roughly how many students are interviewed and offered admission to the College Program? Please note the source of this information. Thanks!

This year it will be around 250 +/- 75. We do not over-accept. We will accept 32 initially. If one of those 32 declines, we will accept another. Thus we will maintain 32 active acceptances at all times by the end of the interview season. So - in theory - if nobody declines it will be exactly 32. It will probably be in the high 40s. But now you are asking me to predict how 32 people will act. Which, of course, is impossible.

I hesitate giving this information. Not that I want to hide it from you. But because I know what premeds do with this information. What they do is try and "predict" the "probability of acceptance" based on this past data. You cannot us this information to "predict" your own success if interviewed. I wrote about this logical fallacy in the past here:

Submitted secondary today. Held on to it for too long because I considered withdrawing, then realized I was being stupid. Case is a fantastic school for what I want to do and they favor research. Hoping for some love.

Is there a place on the Case website to learn more about the ID research, or should we just look up individual faculty members?

Also, what if you have an area of research/professional interest but you don't really have any experience to justify your choice? Would it be frowned upon to express that interest if it's not reflected in your background?

Edit: for a UP candidate, not CP

Thanks for the information! One more CP question: First decisions come out in December, so do they make their decisions on a rolling basis after each interview day or all together later on?

I ask because I will have an update letter to provide after my interview including a new publication and wanted to know if I should have that in ASAP after my interview.

Does the CP program see the secondaries completed for UP if we are applying to both? I am trying to determine if I need to write up a different research experience or can I duplicate it for CP. I'm being a little lazy since I have a lot of secondaries to fill out? Thanks much!

Just submitted yesterday so I'll field this question. IT'S THE SAME APPLICATION! You submit the same essays for both programs. If you apply to CP there is just an extra essay or two you are required to fill out. Applying to "both" programs just involves checking two boxes.

And now I'm quoting myself..... I've never done that before. Annabellachang, I saw your experience in another thread so no need to tell me unless you want to. I thought I would share an experience regarding the CP. I'm a post bac doing TBI research at the NIH. We had a school fair in July and I was able to speak with a rep. from CCLCM. The first thing he asked me was, "how much research experience do you have?" They are very serious about applicants having significant research. I know this is a given for CP but it seems like if you don't have a lot of research you don't stand a chance. I'm not saying this to discourage anyone, I think giving it a shot is great. I just know how pre-meds love anecdotal evidence about the application process.

After going over these posts, I just realized that beforehand, people were not getting email notices when they were placed on hold but could see their hold notices on iapply...but more recently people are getting hold notices through email but nothing shows up on iapply... is it possible that UP or CP has placed students on hold, and neither emailed those students nor placed anything on iapply? I'm starting to worry that that's what's happened to me. 🙁

Yeah I'm starting to wonder too... I just have these big white spaces under the bars that changed size the other day (sounds crazy but they went from being small to being really big). I was wondering if they'd done something with my app and just not told me 🙁

I hope you're right.

I know this question is going to sound neurotic, but for those of you who have had interview invites from UP and/or CP, what change did you see in the space for each school...did the interview invite cause the previously blank space to become wider...or narrower? Lol, again, sorry for the neurotic question. I'm just a nervous wreck right now since I haven't received any II's yet...I really need just one II soon to get rid of the ache in my stomach.
 
You sound really paranoid. I submitted two days ago and my white spaces in my status are HUGE. Just relax, you will find out soon enough. The anxiety is getting to you! It's OK.

Lol, I know I sound paranoid...I'm just worried that there's a rejection that was meant to be posted to my page that never got posted at all... The white spaces for me also started of as huge and now are half the size they were before. I'm sure that can only mean one thing...and not a good thing.

Haha, relax. According to this thread iapply is totally new this year, resulting in our nice glitches (such as me getting placed on hold with no notification email, others getting emails but no iapply update). However, if you haven't received either, chances are your still not doing bad. The reason for the bar size changes is probably because Case is likely trying to tweak the system to get it functioning properly. This might result in the aesthetic changes you notice and have NOTHING to do with your application.

Edit: Or my favorite glitch, the person who got rejected with the line "we look forward to meeting you"

This application cycle really is a test of patience...clearly I am failing at it, lol.

It's heck. Not gonna lie, this waiting is a killer for me this time around. Last year I had school and everything. Then was on a waitlist till August 6th. I think my patience went right out the window after that. I'm always telling myself "relax, you currently have applied to 12 schools, completed 11 secondaries, 2 interviews, 1 rejection, and whatever you do, DO NOT LOOK AT TATERTOTS APPLICATION EXPERIENCE." :laugh:

It's funny, and all you can do is keep your head up and keep on pushing. And avoid comparing yourself to others, because quite frankly, if you get an interview somewhere, realize you are a darn fine applicant. Now sell yourself.
 
Final thing I will say about this. I have only herd of one instance of a school making a mistake with applications. If Case made a determination about your app. you would know. They wouldn't glitch and change the spacing because you're rejected. If they decided something you would get an email, or your status would have information. Good luck.
 
The white spaces are huge because the letters are embedded in an envelope image.

If there are any status change you will be notified by email and within couple of hours it will be displayed in your iApply status page.
 
Having so much trouble shortening my research essay to 3,500 characters... it's more than double that right now 🙁

All my essays were 100-200 over the limit. You may be going into too much detail unless you have done over 5 years of research. Leave something to talk about in the interview.

I am not quite sure what you are asking? I think you mean to ask "when are individual decisions made." That is, "for a given applicant; when is the actual acceptance decision made?"

The short answer is that you are sporadically being evaluated. For example, initial interview assessments are made on the day of the interview. This is done while all of your reviewers and your background information are fresh in the mind of the interviewing team. This is in preparation for the committee review of your application.

The full committee is somewhere between 50 and 100 people who meet periodically- with not all members present at every meeting. They collectively revisit your entire application (remember, it is read in its entirety before your interview, too). This plus the feedback from your interview day is considered. Your image and stats are displayed on a giant screen. Teams working in parallel review every section of the application (grades/letters/interviews/PS/essays/research). This is followed by a discussion of your candidacy. If your ears start burning mid-December - it's because you are being discussed by the committee. :meanie:

Every member of the committee has a vote. The votes are tallied and the final results of this is sent to a super-committee. The super-committee again reviews the top recommendations for the full committee. They review everything again and perhaps make calls to letter writers or bosses about research or other sorts of things for those being considered. The actual decision is made at this meeting.

The list of people to be accepted then must past muster with Case's admissions officers. Case has the right to veto any applicants at their discretion.

And let me say: The timing of all of these meetings is highly variable. I don't know when any other them are scheduled -don't ask me. :shrug:

This makes me think that if the UP program rejected you, you have no chance at the CP because Case already said no once. Are there current students that were rejected pre-interview in the UP but accepted to the CP?

Praying for an interview invitation this week (in a neurotic, secular way). I loved my undergrad at Case, and I want to go back!

Let's hope my weird, data-driven research in psychometrics and the experimental analysis of behavior appeals to the adcoms.

I was e-mailed a password for the secondary yesterday, and I just added my essays. To clarify for others:

The medical school secondaries excel file on here included the optional scholarly essay for the UP program (applied 2009 and remember it as well); however if you apply to both programs, this essay is not included. They use the Research Essay for both UP and CP. Therefore, I had wrote one for each but it turns out that I could have been lazy and used only one research experience. FYI

Wow, curve ball. I applied for both programs so I only got the one research essay. Sorry for the confusion.
