if you accept a school by may, do you have to give up your spot on waitlists of other schools, or just accepted spots at other schools?

Just spots at other schools. You can hold as many waitlist spots as you want, but a lot of the times you have to decide yea or nay on accepted-off-waitlist positions within 24 hours, which also means giving up your current choice's spot

Waitlisted as well. I hear that a good percentage of the class comes from the waitlist so we shouldn't have to worry that much!

A good percentage of the class but a bad percentage of the waitlist :meanie:

I'm sure it varies each year though, maybe even quite a bit. I'm sure there are quite a few individuals who would choose to go elsewhere, leaving an ambiguous number of spots for waitlisters like myself 🙂

Well, I dont know about you guys, but I am mighty glad decisions came out before the weekend.

Congrats to all accepted again! Im jealous but no longer stressed about it

Waitlisted. Very sad.... but happy to still be considered. Really hoping. Argh, the torment continues.

Congrats to everyone accepted !

Smalloneeeee!! I would invite you over for some wine if I could. Same goes for you, Narie. Hell, same goes for anyone on here! Wine cures many ailments 🙂

thanks, teal! You rock at being a non-smug accepted student, and I would totally accept that wine opening (and drinking to the dregs) invitation. 😛

But f'real, congrats to everyone who was accepted. This must be such a huge day for all of you!!

late to the party, i took a nap and set my alarm until 5pm so I wouldn't have to think about this

ACCEPTED VIA PORTAL UPDATE!!!!!! No calls or anything... Dream come true!! Time to withdraw from other schools!

I <3 you Columbia!!! 😍😍
Impressive. Congrats!

Waitlisted here, rejected from NYU, and just found out today that my second aunt, her younger brother, and older sister and husband were all dead from the recent hot air balloon accident. Today is a disaster.

As we all know, I'm not the most in tune with sarcasm (lol), but I hope this is not true?...

😕

Congrats, wangers! With a letter like you received earlier on in the cycle, I couldn't imagine them disappointing you. Awesome stuff for you this year! 🙂

Thanks! I am a total spaz so I have no place being smug hahaha. Totally humbled by the Columbia love. After the completely generic, not very inspired letter from Dr. Nicholas a few months ago I sort of thought it was downhill from there. Maybe my interviewer really advocated for me, I did feel like it was my best interview of the season. This process is so crazy and inexplicable, that's all I've taken away from it.

And HA to "drinking to the dregs," never heard it but I love it and will steal it from you 😛

It really is completely unpredictable! I sat with my interviewer for 1.5 hours talking about everything from art to medicine to one of his TED talks, and was expecting that he'd fight for me! We even were the last to finish and made the tour group wait for me. haha Oh well, maybe La Jolla is where it's at for me!! 🙂

Omg, I'm so sorry. What a day... Sending you e-love from Fiji (me... not the island).

Alas, I will maintain my reading of this thread. Was hoping to cancel some second look weekends today, but I guess I shall travel nonetheless.

Gahhh I'm sorry man 🙁. Hang in there, tomorrow will be better.

Just wanna make it clear for the next year's applicants!!!

THE WEILL CORNELL TITLE OF THE LETTER DR. NICHOLAS SENDS MEANS NOTHING

and...

THE PERSONALIZATION OF YOUR LETTER MEANS NOTHING!!

I'm really sorry, it kinds of puts things in perspective. It'll get better with time, I promise. 🙂

yeah i got a personalized letter too. had something like "from a purely personal standpoint, i would love to have you here at Columbia" - Dean Nicholas

Then...boom wait listed

oh...my goodness. I'm so sorry, owl. I will pray for them and for you. I seriously hope you're doing okay..

Im so sorry for your loss as well. Prayers and thoughts with you!

So, I have to cancel a second look that is the same weekend. Thing is, they've already paid for my flight. Anyone know what the protocol might be for things like this? Will they ask me to pay?

I feel bad now 🙁

Thank you, teal 🙂 I'm so happy for you!!

Owl, I'm so sorry. I hope you are able to be with your family.

Moldy, I got the same personalization :/

If I get in, I hope it's in time for Second Look so I can meet you nice folks.

Accepted! Soo crazy. Congrats everyone! Don't lose hope wait lists, a student there told me he got off the wait list like a week before orientation!

I'm really sorry to hear that. Really puts the anxiety of this process in perspective. I know it's difficult now, but with time things will start to get better. My prayers are with you.

Haha. I got the same thing and I've also been wait listed. Now the wait begins...

Thanks for the support, guys. I'm just really happy with what I got, whether it's a waitlist or a rejection. I'm content that I, at least, have a chance to become a wonderful physician someday and that with these experiences, whether good or bad, allow me to cherish my family and friends more than I ever have. It's so disconcerting to see your relatives alive and healthy a few years ago, then they vanish in a blink of an eye due to unfortunate circumstances.

To the accepted students, congrats and enjoy Columbia - it's a wonderful school, and I can attest to it (7 years at Columbia!), even though I'm not likely to get in.

To the waitlisted or rejected students, hopefully you guys have a school that you enjoy attending under your belt. I'm probably going to get off this thread for a while, until waitlist movement starts. You should too!

Life is short - make the most of it!

You're awesome, Owl! 🙂 Will look forward to seeing you move up, off the waitlist and into Columbia. Best of luck in all ways.

can somebody who was accepted please say when you have to reply by?

And just to make sure... the waitlist isn't ranked, right? Just kind of... 600 of us cluelessly waiting without any inkling of our chances?

And also, since the waitlist was just done on the portal this year and not by letter - did anyone get little personalized notes like people did last year?

I think that's about right. lol

I mean, they have to at some point decide to who to fill the next open space with and, thus, in some ways we're always being ranked at this point, but in the sense that they have a list with order 1. 2. 3. and pull us off in order without looking over our application once more, no, I don't think so.

Just chillaxin' at this point. 🙂 SImply glad to know what their decision was at this point...

Waitlisted. 35R, 3.76.

Withdrew my application. Good luck to everyone else waiting.

This unranked thing confuses me. How do they decide who to accept? They just look at all the files again in May or is it randomly rolling? Just trying to think about how to send in update letters at this point.
