anyone have an idea as to when we should expect to hear?

I contacted admissions last week and was told that they have not taken anyone from the alternate list since May 15th and that the class is still over capacity. Once it dips below capacity, they will start making offers to alternates. Wish I had a better answer than that! Hope that helps- good luck!

So I had the opportunity to speak with the Admissions Office as well and they said that there has not been any alternate list movement yet..

In my experience, CHM fills open slots from the waitlist more slowly since they don't rank their waitlist. I know it is really hard to be patient at this point in the game, but please try to relax a little and enjoy the long weekend ahead. I have my fingers crossed for all of you. :luck:

just curious what do out of state matriculants feel about the 60 grand a year price for this school?

Any news/updates from other fellow alternates?? Starting to think that there may be no/very little movement this year.

Forgot I was alternate listed, just rejected recently. Already accepted at my top choice, good luck to everyone waiting!

when were you rejected off the MSU-CHM waitlist?? Congrats on your top choice acceptance!!

Haven't heard anything either. Hopefully some movement starts soon.... either they aren't in a hurry or it looks like they aren't going to pull many off

I was rejected off the alternate list yesterday too. Fortunately I was accepted at my top choice and was already set on going there. Here's the e-mail if any of you still on the alternate list are interested...

Dear CHM Alternate:

Thank you very much for your interest in the College of Human Medicine. A review of our alternate pool and projected number of alternates needed to fill our class shows the need to release a certain number of alternates so that they may pursue other opportunities. At this time, your status as an alternate has been revised to that of an unsuccessful applicant.

If you anticipate that you will be reapplying to CHM through the regular admissions process for the class entering 2014, we would be pleased to assist you in preparing to reapply. Begin by completing the Self-Assessment Guide section of the Premedical Handbook and Self-Assessment Guide at http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/handbook/handbook.php. Once you have completed it, return it to us by fax at (517) 432-0021 or by mail:

CHM Office of Admissions
Michigan State University
Life Science Building
1355 Bogue St., Room A239
East Lansing, MI 48824-1317

After you submit your Self-Assessment Guide, request an appointment with an advisor through our online system at http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/applicants/appointment.php. Please note that our admissions advisors cannot discuss specifics of your application if you already submitted a 2014 AMCAS application.

Thank you for your interest in the College of Human Medicine. We wish you all the best as you pursue your goal to become a physician.

Sincerely,

Joel Maurer, MD, FACOG
Assistant Dean for Admissions

I was rejected off the wait list yesterday too. Kind of sucks, but no worries. I'm still going to Michigan State's DO school this year. GO SPARTANS!!

a friend of mine just called the admissions office and they told him the class is still over capacity. that doesn't sound good for those of us on the WL

Not sure if I believe that. If you look in this thread one person got accepted from the alternate list before may 15th and there has been at least 4 people post on here saying they withdrew. There will definitely be some movement. Stay positive and patient!

Sent from my DROID RAZR using SDN Mobile

I hope so! Just passing on what he told me though

Just got removed from wait list yesterday (same e-mail as above --> Unsuccessful). Best of luck to those who are still on it, stay strong!

no one should have. i believe that they are still over capacity on their class

I have never seen the alternate list movement stall so quickly. It seems like it never really started to move.

Hopefully some movement will happen soon. 😕

Is there even a chance of movement if the class is at max capacity this late?

There is always a chance and I know people that have been accepted in August. However, it appears that there will be much less movement this year than in the past. I really hope I am wrong, though.

Anyone know when CHM starts class?

I'm hopeful there will be movement soon. The adcom has clearly looked at the alternate list candidates since there has likely been at least 4 days of sending out rejection emails (where they have told unsuccessful applicants to pursue other opportunities). I feel that they anticipate some open seats and that it all depends on the movement of other schools' wait lists. Ahhh so much speculation and uncertainty... hang in there everyone!

i guess they removed a large chunk of their WL, but it looks like from the people still here on SDN that there is still a good number of people on it? I think they are keeping us for the possibility that spots open up, so it's not over yet. I'm just not very optimistic.

Deferred until next year. I hope one of you gets my 2013 spot. Good luck all!

Hi everyone! This is my first post but I've lurked on here since being placed on the alternate list for MSU CHM. I just got the call from Dr. Maurer today that this year's class is still over capacity, but that I am being offered a place in 2014!!! :soexcited: I have never been so happy in my life...MSU was my dream school! I started babbling like a crazy person and crying on the phone! I just wanted to come and post this for anyone still desperately waiting and biting their nails like I was these last months with no clue what was going on. There is still hope! Good luck, and I hope you hear from them soon!

congrats! are you in state or out of state?

also, did he mention if you had any chance of getting accepted for 2013?? if your only option is 2014, that probably means there definitely will not be any WL movement this cycle. i guess we can all still hope for 2014 acceptances, but i doubt they'll hand many of those out (i've never even heard of that being done before). awesome news for you though!

Thanks!!! I had no idea this was even an option either! From the way he was explaining things, it sounded like there was not going to be any alternate list acceptances for 2013. He mentioned that it was something that hasn't happened before, and that's why he was offering the 2014 option to some of the applicants that they were hoping to take off the list. I'm still feeling delirious from the joy though, so don't take my word as gospel...I don't want to lead anyone astray if I misinterpreted something. Oh...and I'm in-state, a non-traditional applicant. 🙂

Congrats. I also got the call yesterday from Dr Maurer. Words cannot describe how I happy I am to get a guaranteed spot for fall 2014 and possibly this coming fall if the class size drops below 200. I talked to Dr M and he told me the class is over capacity at 207 and I guess this has never happened before where they had too many people accept their admission offers. I believe only about 10 alternates got acceptances and am praying for more movement so that I could squeeze in this fall! There's still a chance that the class size dips below 200 by august 17th so hang tight everyone. I felt your pain last year as I was rejected last June from the alternate list.

Wow. I have never heard of anything like this. Congrats to those that have been accepted for 2014. Hoping for at least a little more movement for anyone still on the alternate list.

Not surprised by the increased interest. It's a good school and you can really tailor the type of experience you want to have with the different preclinical and clinical campuses. Plus with the 3 new schools in the state, most in-state students (the ones who didn't get into U of M anyway) are looking to be at an established, well known school, unless they are set on being in SE MI.

Also, this was the first year of the new interview process. Maybe CHM was able to pick students that were a good fit with the school really well with the new process.

Could be. I'm old and dont do interviews anymore.

How are they selected?

It's volunteer basis and then you go through a little orientation/training thing. Technically (at least a few years ago) 3rd and 4th years could do them, but not all students are in GR or Lansing, and more importantly, not exactly the best reason to ask for excusal from clerkships.

How are they selected?

Students can sign up at the student organization fair to serve as CHM Admissions Ambassadors. There are opportunities for students to help with interviews, lunches, tours, and student panels.

Like someone already said, you just have to go through training and remain in good standing academically.
