Enjoyed giving a tour today. ESPECIALLY when I was asked by one applicant if I was SisterDisco. Ha! I hope everyone who interviewed enjoyed the day.

6 weeks left of second year! I seriously can't believe it... I feel like it was only yesterday that I was interviewing at schools. Once classes are over I will be studying intensely for 6 weeks for Step 1 and then will have a 2 week break before third year starts. Can't wait!

LOL.. good luck 🙂

Has anyone heard anything about scholarship offers yet?

can anyone give their input on the pros and cons of doing their first 2 years in either east lansing or grand rapids?

This is my absolute favorite. I didn't give tours or interviews this week guys 🙂

But I'll be doing tours and the student org fair during second look day!

(Fun fact: Not sure if PlayUltimate knows who I am--probably not since I'm one of the "bad" students who never comes to class/Secchia unless it's required, but I have no idea who she is at school 🙂 )

Are you going to second look day? You'll get a very good idea of where you want to be

Nope! I never go to lecture either, but I study at Secchia most days. I have absolutely no clue who you are. BUT. Good luck on Path Wednesday!

Hahaha thanks 🙂 Definitely not looking forward to so many more required things next year with PBL 🙁

That happens later

Any idea how later? I LOVE MSU, but the price tag for OOS is kinda getting me down.I'm trying to decide where I'm going to be next year and I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have to worry about money. 🙁
Thanks!

I think it is either June or early July.

Tomorrow's tuesday before decision release date!!

Praying for it 🙂

For any current students, a friend of mine told me you guys were learning the physical exam recently. How do you learn to differentiate between whats normal and abnormal? And do you have standardized patients or do you have to practice on each other? If so is it uncomfortable prodding and poking each other everywhere?

No way... second year is even better than first year! Sure you have PBL required 3 days a week, but you also have far fewer lectures to watch each week (only Tuesday/Thursday). I liked first year, but I LOVE second year because I have so much more independent study time.

Got the call tonight around 7:30! Interviewed 3-15.

That's a good thing. That just means they haven't evaluated your file yet.

I got wait listed. Has anyone heard of movement off the wait list?

I know quite a few first and second year students that were originally wait listed. So there is definitely still a chance for you. I will keep my fingers crossed for you too.

Thanks. Is there typically any movement before May 15th?

I was the guy who asked you if you were sisterdisco at the end of the tour!

Hi I just got the call today at 3:17pm (in California). I'm in!~

SDN was, honestly, very helpful for me throughout my application process so I'd like to give back what I can.

My stats are as follows:

GPA 3.5, MCAT 30Q
Extracurriculars: Student run clinic and Neurophys. lab for three years.
Secondary sent 7-18-12
Interviewed 3-27-13

Hmm, I interviewed on the interview day right before you and I still have no decision made 🙁
maybe they're just keeping all the rejections till later so they could pull the band-aid off all at once. :/

Congrats though!

I know it must suck waiting and waiting, but in my experience, they did not review my application post-interview in order. I had a decision made 2 weeks after my interview which was well before many people who interviewed before me based on this thread. I hope everything works out for you though. It is interesting that Sako Debacle heard back yesterday considering 4/10/13 isn't one of the release dates.

My first official post as an SDNer. I got the phone call from Dr. Maurer yesterday (April 10th). Interviewed on 3/22 at Grand Rapids. Keep your head up everyone. I never thought this day would come. I submitted my secondary on the last day they were accepting secondaries. Somehow pulled off getting an interview and now FINALLY got my first acceptance into medschool 🙂. Patience my friends. They are still accepting people. I heard the waitlist moves during April/May. I wish you all the best.

Congrats! I know that must be a relief to you. Would you mind going into a little more detail about what you heard concerning the waitlist? Or was the April/May info just a generalization based on what typically happened in past years?

Yea it's just typically what i heard happened the last few years. It's also true for many medschools around the nation coz applicants will tend to start withdrawing their acceptances/waitlist positions around late April/ early May if they're certain on where they're going.

Has anyone on the alternate list who has sent in updates received verifications that they were received? Congrats to all those accepted! 🙂

I know it must suck waiting and waiting……..

Thanks!!
I got an e-mail today and was referred to ABLE.
Anyone have more information about it, other than what's online. How many they accept, what's it like, the process behind it, what to do?

No I didn't receive verification. I contacted them to make sure they received my updates though.

That's a good thing; that means no rejection 🙂
From what I remember them mentioning on interview day, you will be taking Medical Neuroscience and Anatomy (can't remember what other courses but I am almost certain definitely those 2). I believe you are enrolled during a summer session as well, so it's a total of 3 semesters. I believe admission's said they have a 90% matriculation rate into the medical school (if you do well after ABLE, 90% of the ABLE students start in the fall) so there is no gap year. I believe they take between 10-15 students each year, but I am not sure (don't quote me).

Did they say you were automatically accepted into the ABLE program or you are being referred to the ABLE committee for further review?

Ummmmmmmmmm half of us don't even know what we're feeling for 🙂 The more you do it the better you get at it.

We have standardized pts and practice on each other. First year the most "uncomfortable" part is poking around the inguinal area, but you don't do anything with any orifices south of the throat until second year.

yeah I think I'll like second year a lot more, I'm just praying I don't end up in an 8 AM PBL 😛

"Referred" to ABLE. I just got an e-mail explaining the curriculum and objective behind it. There is a one-month summer session as well. However, the decision isn't made until June 1st and if you get it in then you start a month later. There is an additional application process, I guess we could call it a "tertiary application" 🙂 lol But it sounds great, hopefully I get in.

Learning medicine works like this:
1) Learn normal
2) Learn abnormal

This makes sense, and much of the first year is geared toward learning what is normal. After all, unless something is grossly abnormal, how do you expect to recognize an abnormality if you don't first have a baseline understanding of what is normal?

Second year is geared toward reinforcing our understanding of what is normal/healthy and also introducing the pathophysiology behind abnormal findings.

We haven't practiced the physical exam on each other at all during second year, but we did first year. You are matched with a classmate of the same gender and it was totally fine. We use standardized patients for everything during second year.

That's awesome!!! It does sound great 🙂 So you would finish the ABLE program in May/June of 2014 or you do a summer session in 2014 as well?

Good Luck!!!

There's a one month session july-august. Then the two normal school semesters where you take some medical school classes. By then you go through second-look day for campuses and move on with the class with the following class only you don't have to re-take the courses, the following year.

Thanks, it's an amazing opportunity, especially if you come from an underserved/educationally challenged background or just need some extra help getting through.

Super grateful 🙂
