Describe one or more experiences where you collaborated or worked as part of a team with people of different racial, ethnic and/or socioeconomic backgrounds and/or belief systems than your own. What impact did this experience(s) have on you? (600 words or less)

What the hell do I do if it didn't impact me? They were normal people just like everyone else, we worked together, got our **** done, and moved on with out lives.

Wow you guys are quick essay writers. This will probably take me the greater part of the weekend to write these 🙁

Me too. Have already been mulling over them for a few days to no avail. I've written many secondaries so far, and these questions have been the hardest for me to explain.

Thanks weezy.

I hate that picture. I told that fool to take the picture from my good side. Didn't even have my eyebrows waxed either.

i got the email with the secondary but never got an email with my username so i dont know how to set up my account.. how did you guys set up your username??

Yeah, I'm in the same situation. I get to the "Activation Code Request" screen, but I don't have the username.

I *think* I did today lol. Payment submitted, no e-mail confirmation though.

I submitted and did not get any email confirmation, however I was reassured by the fact that I could view, but no longer edit any of my answers/info - I took this to mean that it was submitted

Oh Ok. I think now I am being the shown the secondary application without any means of editing which mean it is submitted. Good luck guys !!

What browser are you guys using?

My secondary is still editable in chrome (couple days post-payment)...😡

Also non-editable; using safari. Do you see the payment in your account transactions? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is one of the schools that required submission before payment.

my thoughts exactly. I mean, I've worked with different ethnicities, but it's never been an impediment...

Yeah there is no submit button after paying or anything. You just pay and it's complete.

It doesn't have to be an impediment. It could have impacted you in a positive way.

I mean that there was no impediment that would be an agent for change, either positively or negatively. Working with different ethnicities felt exactly like working with anyone else, in my experience. Maybe I didn't work with many very cultural people. In order for working with other cultures to influence me, it must feel different from working with common cultures.

My thoughts exactly. It didnt matter to me that they were of a different culture, they were normal, american kids like everyone else :/ . It was no different than working with anyone else. Positive or negative.

Gotcha

How about someone NOT American...? Think of your experiences. It's really not too tough of a question. Show that you're diverse and have worked with a diverse group of people.

Well, my school is very diverse and we have a lot of international students and what not, but I didn't notice anything different when working with them lol. When I said "like normal americans" I meant even though they were from different cultures etc, they didn't act any different from a typical Caucasian american person. Maybe I'm just culturally oblivious >_> I'll figure something out.

The only cultural experiences you have are related to other students in your school?

How about populations that you share hardly anything in common with? Maybe tutoring kids in poor neighborhoods or working with migrant latino workers? I mean, if you go work in a predominantly african american neighborhood in a lower socioeconomic part of town you'll see more than a majority of families that consist of mainly grandparents or even just single moms working two or more jobs with no father figures, in which kids are dependent on state services. You can bet their value systems concerning education and health are far different from your average indian, asian, or caucasian family made of your prototypical two parents and two kids in a nice little suburb. You're going to have to relate to ALL of these people in the clinic. You need to somehow show adcoms you can do that successfully.

Columbus itself is an extremely diverse city, especially for the midwest. Some of OSU's care point clinics are in upscale, pretty much rich caucasian only neighborhoods (like in Dublin, Hilliard, etc.) Some clinics are in predominantly african american (like OSU east clinics). Some are in rural Ohio (like the Marysville clinics). You will see extremely diverse cultures in all of those areas, different value systems for the worth or health care, religion, education, diets, etc. You can't brush aside cultural differences, it is going to have a huge impact on patient care.

I submitted earlier and my application status still says "Incomplete." I paid the $80, clicked submit, and got taken back to the app. Anyone still have this that has submitted??

I think it takes a few days for the info to update on the status page. Mine is the same

Got it. Would be nice if they gave some indication like "application submitted...reviewing for completion"

The fact that they changed the wording of last year's question #3 from "describe any experiences..." to "describe experiences where you collaborated or worked as part of a team..." is interesting. Does this mean that working at a welfare office and teaching kids from poor neighborhoods doesn't count? Because stuff like that isn't really teamwork or collaboration. I'm confused as to how to answer this otherwise.

I honestly don't know how much can possibly be said about social justice vs its advocacy. Define each, compare, examples of each, conclude. 100 words. Am I missing something major here?

I don't really think so...

I agree... dumb, simple question. But I think they are looking for more than 100 words.

I usually subscribe to the idea that the more unnecessary stuff adcoms read on your file the less attentive they become. That being said, it does seem lacking to have 100 words on a 600 max prompt. How would you expand on it beyond the things I said without repeating and going into information the prompt doesn't ask for?

I would argue that you don't know much about the topic of social justice then. Not to sound mean or anything!

No you don't sound mean, but I don't agree with you. Social justice isn't a hard topic to grasp and I've had plenty of real life experience with it, and it's constantly being brought up in politics. I just don't see the prompt asking me to go in depth and analyze it like a philosophical paper would. I chose to keep it neat and simple rather than keep writing without necessity to add extra words.

Either way, I submitted so godspeed to us all. :luck:

I have a question.

As it turns out, with regards to the who have you worked with question, I accidentally copy pasted the response from last year's question(" Describe one or more experiences you have had with people of different racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic backgrounds or belief systems than your own, and what impact this had on you. " Is it worth asking the admissions office if I can rectify this or should I just let it roll?

i did the same thing and didn't notice until uofp complained about it. please share if you call and what they say.

I did the same thing haha. OSU isn't high on my list, and I wasn't expecting to write about social justice, so I was lazy and just went with the response I wrote ahead of time for that question.

I mean, if you didn't get in last year, I think re-writing your essays for every university and having somebody look over them would probably be the best approach. But if your essay from last year was good, I wouldn't worry about it.

I actually didn't apply last year so I don't know if I would have gotten in. My essay is good, no doubt, but it doesn't answer the question as "head-on" as I'd like for it to.

I appreciate your input and am sure you have good intentions, but giving this info to a bunch of pre-meds who will say whatever an adcom wants to hear, thus not giving a genuine response, is not a good thing. As we speak, plenty of people are changing their answers to say exactly what you just told them. Do you really think someone is going to leave their genuine answer the same if it doesn't align with the information you just provided? There are so many factors going into this admissions process, so for those of us who already wrote and submitted genuine essays that reflect what you said, how do we stand out from those who will just BS it now that you have given the answer? You are an adult, it is your post, and I cant tell you what to do with it, but I think you should erase it for the sake of being fair in one aspect of admissions that is fair (expressing our genuine feeling on a prompt) and for the sake of your school which I am sure would like to admit people who genuinely fit in that group of social justice advocates, not just people who regurgitate the correct answer despite being everything but a social justice advocate.

I agree with this 100%, plus it's not fair to have this kind of unfair, 'insider' insight for those who have already submitted or are not aware of SDN

Weezy, I talked to them exactly about that before I wrote any of this out. I had specifically asked them in the first place to give me a explanation that they were fine with giving out on the internet. They thought that this would be more obvious to applying undergrads than it ended up coming across as. But, you raise a good point. I'll take the post down for now, and I'll re-post if people are still confused in three weeks. Thanks for telling me.

Well it's all good now. I just realized by quoting you, I immortalized your post.

+1

Also, Weezy, you might want to delete your post that quotes it...

Having read your initial message from the adcom, I'm just going to say that flat out, the way the prompt was written did not point me as an applicant in the right direction. I read it over and over, and had a lot of my friends, including some philosophy majors, and no one came to the conclusion of what the adcom is looking for. It read it as, "what is the CONCEPT of social justice", versus what I guess they intended which was what are real world implications. I think it would have been a great secondary prompt if it was written more clearly and I would have had a great time writing it!

Oh well, life goes on.

edit: I also wanted to thank you for taking the time to look into it for us in the first place.

Ok I figured it out. Thanks. I hope I didn't come off as harsh. I do understand that you had good intentions.
Nope, I totally understand. This process is hard enough already. The offer to help still stands if you guys have any questions about Columbus or Ohio State. Good luck, everybody!

I am actually curious to know the content of your post, Bender Offender. For those of us that have already submitted our secondaries, it would be a nice piece of mind to know whether we responded to our essays correctly -- especially if your post was approved by the school. Please PM me if you feel comfortable sharing it.

Also, if anyone is incapable of a genuine essay, it is really an irrelevant concern since it'll come out in their interview anyways, if they get that far.

Interview invites came out last year starting 7/18...hmm...you think they're that far this year?

Maybe if you beg more he'll do it lol

so, if you submitted, what benefit would it be to you? it's a moot point now. Also, his post (most importantly) was not school approved.

Side note: FIRST ON PAGE 4!
