OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! II just noe via email!!!! Literally jumped up and down like a 5 year old as I ran to my PI to choose a date! But dude, the airfare is gunna KILL me!

Any recommendations on hotels?

Congratulations!! So happy for you 🙂 I don't really have a hotel recommendation because my interview this Friday will be my first time staying in Portland, but AirBnB.com is a pretty cool site if you're on a budget and interested in getting a real taste for living in the area. It's kind of like couchsurfing except not as sketchy and you have to pay...

YAY! What day is the interview?

Just got my II too! It's like Christmas in February today! 😀

Whew. Was starting to get a bit nervous that after two app cycles (including interviews both time) they'd already seen enough of me and just didn't want to talk to me ever again. 🙄

That is awesome! You just get it now or earlier today? Also if you don't mind me asking what was your status before this?

At 3:15pm, just now.

Status was complete since 11/19, no further updates.

👍 That makes me happy that you have an II! I agonized with you in the thread last year and was really disappointed that you were ultimately not accepted. I really hope that this cycle is different for you!

Good luck on your interview! :luck:

Congrats !!!! Anyone else heard anything?

Alright! Congratulations!! I stayed at the University Place Hotel and Conference Center on Lincoln. It was decent quality for the money. I drove to my interview and it only took 5 mins.

Good luck!

Congrats!!! I'm on the edge of my seat now!

congrats guero...rachelkj i agree, yours is coming soon!

Thanks everyone! My interview is this Friday. And now I'm freaking because the flights are so long. Bluepotato, Dianyla and I are planning on getting a couple drinks Friday night. If it's cool with her, maybe all three of us can hang out? I contacted the host program to try to land a free place to stay. It'd really help financially. Let's hope they have some room left.

Who else is local and down for coffee (or other beverages 😉 ) this Friday... dsoz? rachelkj - I can't remember if you're local?

I won't be able to stay late - have some family obligations to tend to later - but it would be great to meet up with you guys.

I'm slotted for Feb 15th interview date. Now just trying to decide whether I want to go through the stress of suit-shopping again or just wear my favorite suit for the third year in a row. It is a rather nice suit, and hard to find a good non-black suit, but am I being totally silly and vain to worry that they'll recognize it from last year? 🙄

Yes! The more the merrier! Come one come all, meet Dianyla and Guero. Forewarning, I'm pretty heavily tattooed and look like a hoodlum when not suited up. 😛 Anyone who intends to meet is welcome to FB me, too. You'll know about the tats when you see me, so what the heck. LoL

No, I don't think that's vain or silly at all. But I don't think you have anything to worry about. They'll likely just know you're reapplying.

I ended up doing two one way tickets to save money by using some frequent flier miles. I got a nonstop back to Ca$hville and a much shorter layover out to Portland: $325 total, not bad considering they were quoting me like $800 for round trip.

Guero and Dianyla what was the latest date available for you guys? And congrats again.

Yeah, I'd definitely be up for drinks, just let me know where and when! It'll have to be after 7:30 for me though, but if you guys want to meet up earlier than that I can just come a bit late if that's all right.

Dang, Friday? That was fast!

So, SDN party at the bar? I am local btw, I live in NE. Maybe we can figure something out through PMs? Or is this too many people for that to make any sense?

Awesome! PM me.
Latest date offered to me was 3/15.
My latest offer was 3/1, so I guess they're filling up quick! How many people interview in one day?

Yup yup! If you guys PM me your names we can do a small OHSU interview group and message each other like that (my FB is hidden).
Maybe I'll have in interview to celebrate by then 🙂
I sure hope so!

Now off to bed for me...for real this time. LoL

Awesome! PM me.

/QUOTE]

There are only about 20 +/- 2 people in an interview day.

I already have plans for Friday. Sorry I will miss the gathering.

Once you all get your acceptances, then we can all go celebrate the right way!

Awesome, thanks for the info. And you're darn skippy! We will have the ultimate Portlandia celebration! 🙂 Do they send out final decisions in late March?

I think the final decisions, and the ranked wait list are posted in May.

The good news for you is that OHSU does admissions weird and it always holds a few spots open until the end so people that are interviewing later still have an equal shot at getting a spot. Do awesome at the interview, connect with the "longer, traditional" interviewer because he/she has about 40% of your score. The other 40% from the rest of the MMI, and 20% from your stats.

Have you done an MMI circuit before? If not, research the types of questions that come up. Most of the basic types come up here, but with a NDA I can't give specifics.

Good luck. Make sure you ride the tram down to the waterfront and look around down there on your tour day. You get a free pass. I should have done better research to know where the new building was being built. I didn't know which construction project would be the school for our second year.

2 Points. The tram is free going down and now you can't miss the new building off to the left. 🙂

Ya, going down is free. The pass that they give you is for getting back up the hill when you are ready to go back. I had an afternoon interview time so I went down to check out the health building at the bottom of the hill. I have lived in the Portland area my whole life (except a few years away at college) and watched the whole "tram fiasco" as it was being built. I had not, until my interview, rode the tram. It was a good experience to get over with. Now I can say that it will probably be part of my morning commute starting in August. 😛

When I interviewed in October, the "can't miss" new building must have been a lot less impressive, because I missed it.

I mean.. granted there's a lot of construction in that area.. also with the new pedestrian bridge and road construction... but it just fit with the map as well. Definitely one of the smoother trams I've been on (good for a commute bad for a midday thrill ride :meanie:)

I would enjoy it then for the .5 - 1 year you'll get to do it in the pre-clinical part. Is there a definitive date of opening for the new building. I got a different time frame from nearly everyone.

Katy said on the interview day that it would be open for our second year. I am not going to hold my breath hoping that it happens sooner. For me, it was just a matter of not trying to get my hopes up too much. I didn't do a lot of the research that I should have done before I went to the interview. I knew that there was going to be a new building, but I did not look into it more. Then when I was there I was curious to see it, and I could not figure out where it was going to be. At the time I only had a dumb-phone so I could not look it up while I was down there. Now that I have my smart-phone I would probably just pull up the map and figure it out.

As to all the construction, don't forget the light-rail bridge that is being built that crosses the river... That is going to be nice having the light rail go out to Milwaukie (I live in Oregon City). Too bad that it won't be done until 2015, at the END of my second year. Just in time for clinical rotations.

Thanks a bunch! The B&B lady suggested this place, too. And man, they are NICE (and cheap)! I can't wait to make it out to Portland!

So far our beer group is at 3 people, including me. If anyone else wants to grab beer or morning coffee, feel free to PM me. I created an "OHSU Beerfest" group, lol. *dances off singing about OHSU*

The beer group is for this Friday? Bummer! I'm a local (currently living in Seattle) but my interview isn't till the 15th. Super excited for the interview though!

Does anyone know how much they alot for cost of living? I see the OOS tuition, fees, and insurance figure, but no CoL figure... Perhaps someone that has already interviewed has this figure?

I asked a little earlier in the thread and was told that there's about $20,000 leftover after tuition and fees for CoL.

Thanks! Do you mean that we receive a $20k refund after disbursement for CoL? Or do you mean we need to request an additional $20k in loans beyond the tuition and fees?

It sounded to me like we receive a $20k refund, but I'm not totally sure.

HOORAY!!! I GOT IN!!!

Accepted 2/6/13 via email
Interviewed 12/21/12

I think you ask for loans equal to the Cost of Living. You get a big check. You give most of it to the school. You get about $20,000 left over for the year. It is probably distributed based on semester or quarter (however the school is organized), but you get the idea.

dsoz

Congrats!! Would you like to celebrate with us at OHSU beerfest this Friday? We hope to join you soon!

Unfortunately I live 3,000 miles away, but drink a beer for me anyway! 🙂

Yeah, that seems more in line with what I expected: You ask for an additional $20k beyond fees, tuition, and insurance for CoL. So for us OOSers, we're looking at ~$80k per year, which is what I'd be paying at GWU. But they do have the student Co Op, which charges rent as low as $250/month! That'd significantly reduce your CoL. In DC? I'd be paying $1500/month for rent.

Hah, me too. You wouldn't believe the length of the flights from TN to OR when they're last minute and chock full of transfers. Some were 10hrs long! Thankfully I was able to land a 6hr return and a 6.5hr flight out.

Anyway, congrats again on getting in! I'll tip some beer for my homie. 🙂

Were you direct admit? Or placed on hold first?

No hold that I know of, but I assume it was direct. I checked the portal last night--no decision. Got the acceptance email this morning.

Congrats! And yea as far as I know the 20k is on top of the tuition and fees. Also Geurro the co-op from what I have heard is hard to get a spot in(don't know first hand obviously)but once you did get in you'd be set

Thanks, I figured as much. I'll stop by and ask them if I can apply for a spot before being accepted. I always prefer living closer to the school and cheaper over luxury.

Also, am I right in that OHSU's pre-clinical curriculum is true P/F? I can only find info that says passing is >/=70% (except in anatomy, >/=75%).

They have honors, near honors, satisfactory, fail or something like that for all 4 years. There may be a grade between near honors and satisfactory I missed.

More likely than not, there will be others that are looking for roommates. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a place that rents for less than $1000/month and share it between several people.

My mortgage is just over $1000/month. The only problem is I am about a 35-40 minute public transportation ride away from the bottom of the tram. It is less than 20 minutes if I could drive, but the likelihood of getting a parking spot is low. It will be tri-met for me.
