I am in-state, and was complete in October. Still nothing. A really irritating system. I've got two other acceptances, and am really debating the pros and cons of even attending the interview should it be offered. Anyone know what OHSU's merit aid is like? Are there scholarships available?

Supposedly there is nothing for MS1. There is a small amount that can be given for a few MS2.

Don't count on merit aid. It will all be loans. But for me, OHSU is the lowest cost of the three schools where I was accepted.

Good luck to you.

There is merit aid available, full tuition for all four years. Scholarship offer received approximately a month after acceptance to the program.

Just gave the Admissions Office a call. And, much to my surprise, I talked to a real person...a real nice person to boot. (Luckily I was adequately prepared for this moment after what happened to Guero.) Looks like all interview decisions will be made "about mid-February." It's been a little over 4 months for me without a decision (I'm an OOS MD/MPH applicant) & I'm ready. Lay it on, Oregon.

I know, right!? TELL MEEEEE OR-E-GONE! LoL At least we all know a decision is coming. (I'm in the MD/MPH mission group, too.)

I wonder if they do the MD/MPH interviews all at once...at the end.

I had mine a month ago; there was one other MD/MPH applicant interviewing with me. My impression is that applicants for this program are sparse and scattered throughout the season.

Has anyone who interviewed around mid-December gotten a status update yet?

Interviewed 12/14 and no word yet. However, I have a somewhat ominous feeling about tomorrow 🙂

That's complete and utter nonsense if true. I am an Oregon resident, and with the scholarships that I recieved from the University of Chicago, it would be cheaper to go there right now. I still wanted OHSU to be a possibility, but policies like that discourage qualified students from coming to Portland. Is it even worth making the trip back to Portland at this point?

I knew a few people that got 5K a year scholarships. Nothing too big.... Some people are saying they have increased the OSS percentage of recent classes to get more $ (and as a result lots of ISers on the wait list).

I have also heard that OHSU doesn't have a very big scholarship pool (and has one of the most expensive in-state tuitions in the country to boot). I don't really have anything to substantiate that with though.

Out of state tuition for University of Wisconsin will be cheaper for me than in-state for OHSU, but I'd still prefer OHSU. I already have connections at the school and in the community that I could build on over the next four years. But if I had gotten into Pritzker with that kind of scholarhsip (they "continued" me, boo) that would definitely make staying here a little hard to justify, even if OHSU was a better fit. A free $160k is no small thing.

Personally I'm cranking out a bunch of essays for third-party scholarship apps right now 🙂xf::xf:Point Foundation:xf::xf:) and hoping for the best.

OK, I'll try once more.

Regarding merit scholarships, see post #852.

Interview invite! OOS with Oregon background. Complete around mid-october..super stoked!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message Board for Guero:
NOTE: 1/24 - The MD/MPH program regretfully is not able to offer you an interview. Your file is in screening for a potential MD only interview. If you are offered an interview, you will receive an email from Katy Guertin.

So, since I was only in the MD/MPH group, I guess this is essentially an outright rejection, yes? My MCAT is less than 32 and I'm not a resident. 🙁

I'm very sorry to hear this. I had my mind made up that things would work out better for you at this school. So much for the legitimacy of the CGI Magic Eight Ball...

LoL, nice. Thanks for the kind words. I so would've dropped all of my other schools if I landed an interview and got in here. I've been to Portland many times, love the area, and have family owned rentals in Dallas, OR. Too bad that doesn't count. 🙁

Just to chime in on the scholarship issue. I think that the common situation is somewhere between these two posts.

For those who entered more than two years ago, it was true that very few students received merit-based aid, and that those scholarships were applied for at the end of MS1 year, and awarded for MS2 year.

However, there was a big scholarship endowment in 2010. From what I've heard from various sources, the entering class of 2011 was the first to benefit. At the time, the school also said that their goal was to provide small scholarships for as many students as possible - I've heard estimates that around 40% of students receive something, and that the maximum scholarship is 50% the cost of IS tuition. Granted, all of this info came from press releases and town hall meetings a couple of years ago...the school may have ended up doing some things differently.

Regardless, unless you are entering the MD/PhD program, expect to take out loans. The overwhelming majority of students pay for most or all of their tuition that way.

^The full tuition scholarship was for this cycle; I never said it was typical or common, just that it was given. But since folks here seem more interested in asking questions than reading the answers to them, I'll let you all carry on.

Huh. I was always of the impression that if you apply MD/MPH you couldn't revert to MD-only if the MPH side said no.

Their status message to you almost implies that they are granting you this possibility, otherwise it just would have said Buh-Bye, no?

My thoughts exactly. I'm not sure. The fact that they sent a bunch of people that were indeed in a mission group a "sorry, you've been rejected because you're not in a mission group"-type status, I imagine it's the reciprocal for me: They probably accidentally gave me hope. 🙁 Maybe I should call again? I really, really, really love this school; but I know nothing I can say will get me an interview. I'd just be calling for clarification.

Plus? What's really bizarre? Is I'd figure the MPH side would say yes and the MD say no. I have public health related publications and years of experience working in the field. Wtf?

I was told on the phone that if my mph app fell though we are still considered for MD.

realize I forgot to quote you so my question seemed more to the crowd instead of directed to you.
Mind sharing stats and state of residency please?

I am interested, and jealous. But then there are a lot of people that are jealous of those that just have acceptances.

The MPH program has a tiny number of seats.

And is rather political.

To be fair, a lot of public health work becomes political whether you want it to or not. Those are waters that you have to learn to swim in to some extent.

Very true, as with any research field. I don't mind waiting until residency to do my MPH anyway, the far cheaper option. All I can do is hope and pray for an interview at this point.

OOS URM, Still on hold...

I guess this school ain't got no love for a strong, independent, big, beautiful black woman who don't need no man.

But I got in somewhere else already, fortunately. This place also might be mad cause they mirin.

Shame, though. I like OHSU. Liked, I guess, cause the feelin ain't reciprocal fo sho.

Interesting. Is it political because of the nature of MPH research and/or funding, or because of intrinsic OHSU hierarchy?

Your post makes me want a pic. I bet you're hot. LoL Man I'm a weirdo. And I'm not even drinking yet on this fine Saturday evening, just waitin' on my extra hot Prince's fried chicken. Yeah, you be mirin. 😉

On that note, good luck everyone. I really hope we see some more interviews go out soon.

Based on this, I expect I may also get booted from the MPH camp. I don't think I have the public health stuff quite as well-substantiated as that.

+1

I also received full tuition merit support for 4 years in December. I had a meeting with a Dean after I received the scholarship and they're definitely trying to change the perception and use school funds to get students to matriculate there. OHSU pulled me away from Duke, Emory, and Mayo with this scholarship. I'm fairly excited about the new focus the school is taking.

Whoa, n=2 now! This is definitely a neat turn of events. If only I had an interview...

That is surprising in a good way. Hopefully they also give current students scholarships 🙂

Why would they? They've already got you in the bag... many scholarships are primarily used to influence matriculation.

I know of a few schools that do this (after you're in the bag); so I wouldn't doubt it off the cuff. But it is rare.

They are definitely there. (Hear Say)

I don't know if one of these individuals is person in question, but when I interviewed one of the natives mentioned his friend got offered a full ride when accepted a month ago.

Anyone know where they are ion interview season? When is the latest someone has been invited for an interview for?
