No problem! I submitted on 8/2 and was marked completed 8/10 so it's been a little bit of a wait for me. Good luck with your application; I hope it works out!

Thanks so much!

Good luck with your interview and enjoy PDX. Don't forget to visit Powells and eat at a food cart if you have time!

Do you know if you can speed up the audio recordings when streaming?

Unfortunately, I have no idea. I never used the audio recordings, and in my day the whole system was student-run and probably worked differently than it does these days.

Maybe someone else can chime in?

Also, I feel old.

There is no way to speed up the recordings. You have to listen to them as is.

I'll be interviewing at OHSU this Friday, 12/14. Anyone else interviewing on the same day with me?

And for those who care, I'm OOS from California.
Secondary submitted: 8/12
File complete: 9/12
Interview invite: 11/28

I wish you luck in your interview. The MMI section is actually rather fun once you get into the swing of things.

Stats?

It looks like there is an MDApps. If you trust it, looks like a 4.0/37.

Very nice! I am impressed!

Just remember, at OHSU, stats are only 20% of the formula for acceptance. 40% is the MMI and 40% is the longer "traditional" interview.

It is the traditional interview that you want to score major points with. He/she is your advocate at the admissions committee. Be a person that they want to have in their classes for the next four years, and will represent the university well for the rest of your career. Be confident, yet humble. Your stats got you the interview, now impress them with your personality to seal the deal.

Only the traditional interviewer knows anything about your file. The others only have a photo (if you sent one in).

Go into the MMI with the attitude that the person that you are speaking to is your aunt or the parent of a good friend. Talk to them in conversational tones. Don't talk down, be at their level. There is nothing to be shy about, and the person wants to see the best of you. Talk to them on a personal level. Show compassion and empathy in the "acting" stations. Explain your thinking in the "How do you feel about..." stations. And pick a side and back it up in the ethical dilemma stations (don't waver. Medical ethics are what they are, and there is a more correct answer. Pick it and stick to it!)

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your advice 🙂

I would add a modifier of caution to that advice. If you have a decent background in philosophy or biomedical ethics (at least one upper-div college-level course), or perhaps if you're just really perceptive and talented, then I agree that you should be able to sense that 'more correct' position and articulate it well.

If you haven't, you're more likely to pick a bad position (based on your personal beliefs/bias) and dig a hole defending it. If an ethics scenario seems easy as an obvious 'right or wrong' or 'black or white', this is a big red flag that you're failing to recognize the nuances of the question. In such a case, I'd actually advise someone to do a little thinking out loud, considering the perspectives of all the stakeholders involved, and acknowleding the uncertainty of knowing an exact 'right' way to proceed.

Does anyone have a means of contacting the admissions office (preferably a phone number)? I am going to be in Portland for the next month (I am an undergrad at University of Oklahoma but am coming home for Christmas) and want to let them know! Thanks in advance for any help!

Don't try to find the phone number from the school of medicine page. It takes you to a page that does not have phone numbers. If you start at google, and type in "OHSU medicine admissions phone number" you will come up wi
Ith something. Even if it is the main switchboard. Ask to be transferred to the school of medicine. Then ask for an admissions counselor. You may get a voicemail that never gets returned. 🙁 however, I have had success with trying this method last year.

Thanks a lot! I'll give it a try. Better that than not to try at all, right?

It's been almost a month since my secondary was marked complete. Is it too crazy to hope for an II before Christmas? 🙄

In state? Mission group?

I'm OOS, in a Mission Group, and I've been complete since September...

8 weeks complete, IS and no II. I think it's safe to say I've been passed over :-/

Don't give up. The admissions office is overwhelmed with applications, and they interview through March. You may get an II as late as February and still have a good chance at a spot. They keep spots open all along for people that interview late. That is why they have such a large pool of people "on hold"

Katy told us on my interview day that they typically have over 5000 primaries turned in. When I interviewed they already had more than 5200 for the year, and the deadline had not been reached yet.

That is a lot of applicants to sort through. They will get to your application soon enough. It seems that as soon as you give up they will email you with the next step... Maybe your giving up is a sign that they are close to contacting you.

Good luck

In state. I'm sorry you've been waiting so long, that's a bummer 🙁

Uh oh. I guess I probably have a ways to go then. But honestly after looking over this thread, I would try not to draw any conclusions from the long wait. It seems like that's just how OHSU works, unfortunately. And don't they notify people or at least update their status if they've been rejected post-secondary?

I'm In-state, multiple mission groups, and I've been complete for 8 weeks also, for a grand total of 14 weeks they've been sitting on my app. I'm starting to wonder if I managed to say something alarming in one of my essays.

Argh, that sucks! Maybe they're just stunned by what an amazing candidate you are and they need some time to collect themselves and determine the best way to win you over?

In other news, your GPA makes mine look very sad and if they aren't knocking down your door then I doubt I have much of a shot.

Getting an II at the 1-month-post-completion-date is pretty much the fastest track possible. However, as I can attest, speediness of II has basically no bearing on your likelihood of admission post-interview. Two years running, I've gotten a nearly immediate II, and an outright rejection.

Plenty of current students at OHSU were on hold, got invites 8+ weeks after completion, got waitlisted, etc. Don't read too much into any of this, one way or another.

Are most accepted students at OHSU put on hold first before being matriculated?

I believe so. Hold and then wait list. 2 years ago I think the wait list went into the 90's and last year went into the 60's.

check out last year's thread. there is a graph that you can download on post 1389 that shows waitlist movement over time for the past few years. Two years ago there was record movement (almost 100). Last year was only in the 70's.

There is a high probability that people on hold will get in when May comes around.

Pre-interview hold: Generally a bad sign, rare to get an II.

Post-interview hold: Very common. Only the top 5-10% get an acceptance offer after the interview, and the bottom 5-10% get outright rejected post-interview. Almost everyone else (80-90% of interviewees) goes on Hold til May 15th. So it's important to remember that being on post-interview hold is very common and in no way is it a bad sign.

On May 15th, you'll find out if you're accepted, rejected, or your position on the numbered waitlist.

I noticed on the secondary status page that it says: "To applicants who meet one or more Mission-Based groups: Your file is currently being screened in the interview selection process. Please note that due to the large number of files in our applicant pool, this screening may take up to 12 weeks. As soon as a decision is made on your application, you will be notified. The Admissions Committee interviews prospective candidates from October through mid-April."

This is sort of troubling to me, because I have been complete since 8/7, so 12 weeks would be sometime around the end of October or beginning of September. I am in one of the mission-based groups. Is there anyone else in a similar situation as me? I haven't heard a peep since I became complete. I'm starting to think that maybe I should send an email or make a call?

According to the information that they told us on the interview day, there are over 1800 people that qualify for a "mission based group" and only about 500 interview spots for a class that will be 144.

It would not hurt to call the admissions office to see how your file stands in the ranks.

Good luck.

Have you really been complete since 8/7 or is that the date you submitted your secondary? It took them 6 weeks to mark my application complete after I submitted it (the complete date is noted on the web page). I'm hanging at 9-weeks since being marked complete, but it's been 15 weeks since I submitted.

It says complete on 8/7. I submitted 7/27. Mine went really fast I guess. Maybe because I did it so early.

Yea 12 weeks would have been November 30th did you try calling?

I called today got a woman, she said they are really backed up. I hav been complete 12 weeks myself. She said that my app was still being reviewed so basically in a nicer way she said just be patient! Which we all realize is HARD!

Just checked portal, got the hold status

I am so sorry.

It is better than outright rejection.

The hardest part now will be waiting for May, hoping that you are high enough on the list to either get the good news then or having a good shot at getting in off the wait list. That, and having to keep going to interviews just because you are unsure of the whole situation here.

Keep positive and keep hoping. You are in good company for being in the hold pool. I hope you get your good news in May.

Yea I thought the waiting this long was bad now I have another few months to go. I just really am hoping to not have to reapply but also realize that that is a big possibility and not the end of the world if I have to. I am just hoping I either get in or waitlisted on may 15th and not rejected.

Wow..I've been complete since 10/17 so I guess I've got an even longer wait ahead of me. Oh well.

Yup, I've been complete since 9/18, now over 12 weeks. Man, I really love this school and wish I had better numbers.

Still nothing in my portal. I am a very sad Panda amidst this school's queue.

Some of the previous interview dates were also notified on two different days. Probably has to do with who your long interview was with.
