What do you do with all your time then?

Study. I study maybe twice as much as first year. Boards are always in the back of the mind of a second year. We also have much more patient care centered activities.

They shouldn't be until January. When I see you downstairs later, I'll make fun of you for this again. 😉

B's right though. You study more. My days were often shorter though because I could study more during the day.

Well I sent my deposit in Wednesday, so once the check clears I will have my seat reserved (I'm assuming they won't come across anything on my background check.....hopefully)!

I noticed there is a pre-orientation usually in June, can anyone shed light on what this is all about?

The pre-orientation is to give you an idea of what you're in store for. This includes things like housing, the white coat ceremony, and required paperwork (There's a lot of it). It also gives you a chance to scope out potential roomates etc...

Thanks for the response, sounds like a great day to creep on new classmates

And then second year, you don't ever have to go to lectures, there are no labs, and tutor group is 2 hours twice a week.
I was looking at the website and it says tuition is about $28,000 for second year. What exactly are students paying for if there are only 4 hours of tutor groups, no labs, and hardly any lectures?

The letters M and D.

Access to faculty, the clinical activities and labs, your malpractice, etc. etc. Med school isn't cheap, but you won't find a cheaper one in the state.

Got my acceptance letter on Friday afternoon! See you there in the Fall!

Has anyone got a facebook group started yet?

Linda will set up the official facebook group sometime after the multiple acceptance deadline.

Hey everyone, anyone ever known of someone to get pulled off the screener's alternate list for an interview? I'm a non-traditional SMP student and I just updated with my fall grades but wondering if anyone has ever actually had success after being put on that list.

Sorry, never heard of this happening.

According to my interview notes. AWPA comes by snail mail.

Officially snail mail. I got an email from Beth though as well.

Got an e-mail from SIU today... AWPA! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

AWPA today as well. Hopefully that official acceptance soon too.

I have just started looking for a place to rent from in Carbondale and have been having a difficult time. I have a family with a medium sized dog. I'm trying to find a nice townhome or apt that allows dogs, somewhat close to campus. Anyone have any advice?

They will send more info about housing in a couple months. With it being a college town still a lot of the cycles of housing are on a university schedule and many places have no idea when they will have what open. Murphysburo is very near and you can rent houses there, which I know some people have done in the past.

Thanks for the heads up, I figured I may have to find some place outside of Carbondale. I am now being hit with the reality of this transition. Having a family makes logistics so much harder. Then there's the fact that I wont really have an income except for the money allotted for single student living.

It's not easy, but it's doable. There is usually at least one guy in a similar situation every year. I can probably get you hooked up with someone from my class if you have questions / want advice or anything.

I'm the guy in that situation from 2016. I pm'd him w/my email 'n phone.

Hey guys I want to apply to SIU for next fall.. I Have my application filled out and ready to turn in .. and i am taking the DAT soon.. My grades are solid (3.8). I know this is late, i just decided that i wanted to apply to dental school. Do you think i would still stand a chance if i got my application turned in now and took the DAT in a few weeks? or is it too late?

Thanks!

This thread is for the medical school.

You guys have been very helpful, thanks.
You're welcome.

We try. The nice thing is that I think every class has someone that posts on here pretty regularly, which is good for me because I am far enough out from the process that sometimes I don't know things. When the MCAT changes I'm in big trouble.

Does anyone know for sure when the next batch should be released? I thought I read something about it being at the end of January, but now I can't remember for sure.

I know someone that was accepted yesterday

I sent a note to Beth asking her what she could tell me about the date. Once I hear back from her, I'll pass it along. 🙂

Alright, so Beth told me they sent a batch of acceptances out this past Friday (as others on the board mentioned.) She also said to keep your email address current due to between batch acceptances and that the next big batch will go out in early March.

So they sent out the batch of 25 spots ?

So does this mean that ~50 spots have been filled by 2 batches? The third batch is in early March, and the big date where people have to pick 1 school is mid-March?

No the date where all people need to choose is May 15.

They release the last batch end of March.

I heard Memorial is building a new simulation/teaching center that should be complete around 2014. Anyone know how much access SIU students will have to that?

I spoke with Dr. Constance in my interview and he expressed to me that the new lab will be focused on medical team skills. He made it sound like the med students would utilize it. I don't see why they wouldn't if they already use the current sim lab equipment.

We already use the old one, I'd imagine we'd use the new one too.

That is what I assumed but I just wanted to double check. Thanks!

While I do see the pros of PBL, the idea of self studying the majority of the major material scares me a little bit. I've read some posts by SIU grads on other websites saying that there is very little guidance on what to focus on. It seems like it could get extremely overwhelming and that the learning could be a little ADD and unorganized. Anyone want to debunk this myth or give a better explanation for me?

The big date where people have to pick one school is not until May 15th. If they want to accept you, they'll initially put you on the Accept When Place Available list. After that though, you might not hear anything until June. Beth said that a few years ago, someone was called and told he was accepted the day before classes started. So if you've been interviewed but don't hear anything, don't lose hope. :]

Just wondering for current students and cost of housing and what not... is there any wiggle room in the budget at SIU? Do you have any extra loan money?

I wouldn't say there is "little guidance" on what to focus on. You know what to focus on. The major struggle is knowing what depth to go to. Some people like to go WAY to far down and some people like to skim the top. The sweet spot is somewhere right in the middle. In this way, the learning is as "ADD" or "organized" as you are. As a representative of the ADD crowd, I can say that it has had me worried at times, but I'm actually doing great, passing and learning quite a lot. We still all struggle with the depth issue at times, but the benefit of not spending 8-5 in class every day in a traditional didactic school far outweighs the occasional uncertainty of PBL IMO.

In Carbondale most are paying $400-600/month for rent. There's plenty of wiggle room in the budget as far as I can see. Lots of eating out and going out to party etc... (I say lots, but let's face it, this is medical school. Lots means when we actually have TIME to go out and eat or party, we can afford it.) As far as "extra" loan money, look at the Y1 budget and that's what you're going to get. Not a dime more. The only exception to this is if you have children and have them in day care. You can get extra loans for that. If emergencies happen and your car breaks down and you have already spent your allotment for car repairs, you can ask for money to fix it under special circumstances I'm told, but really, they are very adamant from day 1 that what you see on the Y1 budget is what you get. I'm married with 2 kids and other than the day care supplement, I get the same as all my single classmates.
