If you have a computer that works, definitely wait until a couple weeks in to see how you study. In med school it only matters what works for you. A lot of people changed how they studied as school began. It took me until a couple weeks ago to figure out what works best for me. The first 3 weeks are like a freebie course so you will have plenty of time to decide what you like buy a computer then - if you need one. This is a lot more than you wanted, but in a nutshell: don't buy a computer yet - most computers will probably get an upgrade between not and July too.

have there been any acceptances lately? It seems like there was a small flurry of acceptances in Oct/Nov timeframe and that lately things have been quiet. Am I wrong?
 
I received an interview today as a reapplicant. My status was "Remains under consideration for an Interview." Looks like if there are two reapplicant interview days set aside they are going to be 2/21 and 2/28 because those were the two I could select from. Hope this helps any reapplicants who have been stressing for the past 5+ months like me!

I believe there were approximately 4 SDN acceptances in October, 3 in November and 1 in December.

Yes, that's about what I remember. I just wonder if that's normal - a small flurry of acceptances for a couple of months and then silence. I'm really hoping to get accepted. 🙂

I have multiple family members that currently attend UAB and while they were accepted early in the process (extremely good stats) almost all of their friends were accepted in March.

So do those that get rejected just keep the "Secondary Complete & Under Review" status until rejected? I've been like that since October while it seems as though everyone else has "Remain Under Consideration for Interview." 🙁

Did you apply to USA as well? If so, have you heard anything from them?

Yup, reapp with much improved MCAT: 23O ---> 29Q.

No, I didn't think they'd even give me a chance. I thought UAB was more accepting of OOSers.
 
Have you tried contacting them this season and making sure everything is in order?

I think the breakdown for SDN members getting accepted last year was:

October - 3
November - 2
December - 1
January - 0
February - 4
March - 3

There were also at least 4 people on the wait list (1st tier) that were accepted but did not list the date.
 
For FAFSA, does anyone know if you need to include your parents income for UAB? I know for South Alabama you do not include it.

Yes, you have to for UAB at least that's what I understand.

That seems to mirror what's happening this year....acceptances dropping in Dec and Jan. I wonder what the % of UAB acceptees post results on SDN? 5%?
 
The year before last, they sent out acceptances on the third Friday of Feb, so I'm guessing that's what will happen this year. Since Feb 1 was on a Friday, it makes sense that they would wait until a little later.

Were you ever interviewed? Are you an instate student? What are your stats?


I'm still waiting (and hoping) for an acceptance. Interviewed the first week in October and haven't heard anything except a campus choice request.

it seems to me that UAB locked in some applicants early and is waiting for the rest. Maybe they wait to find out if some will withdraw?? I wonder how many they've accepted so far.

No interview here...yet? But I'm not sure they're still even sending out invites.

My stats are slightly above the average for accepted students here. I'm OOS but I went to undergrad here. No interview, although I have a feeling that being OOS and a reapplicant is the reason for delay. We'll see what happens :xf:

hey guys for those of you still waiting....there are only like 17 members in the UASOM class of 2017 facebook group.....im sure not everyone joins the group, but if there are 176 seats id like to think more people than just 17 wud join....anyways, i feel that there may still be a lot of seats open so dont be discouraged and good luck to all!
 
If it makes you feel any better, I really got the impression at my interview that not many people are accepted until March. Only outstanding applicants are accepted before Christmas, and then I'm pretty sure they don't do much in January from looking at past threads. Hopefully we'll be hearing something soon!

I hope that they accept a good number in March. Do you think they wait to see if students withdraw, so their acceptance yield is protected?
 
My status just recently changed from the "complete and under review" to "remain under consideration for interview" and I was complete mid-September, so maybe some of yours will change soon too?

? Really? Many of us have been waiting since last fall. I wonder why the decisions of those who've just been interviewed would get results first?

Was she told that she would get an email? phone call? online notification?

After no change since October, I changed to "Remain under consideration for interview" today as well. Maybe it means it something.

I was hoping that some acceptances would have come out today, but maybe the Adcoms spent today figuring out who they might still interview??

Hi all,

I'm a re-applicant and interviewing 2/21! After I interviewed and got rejected last year, I met with Nathan Smith and he gave me a list of negatives about my app. I have improved all of them the best I could with the time I was given (especially the GPA).

Any advice from those who have already interviewed? Good luck to everyone
 
I'm not sure if anyone has any input in these regards, but it has been a while and I honestly don't remember if this was covered during the interview day - does UASOM have any structured study abroad programs (summer or otherwise). If not, are they receptive to students' proposed international projects etc.?

I can't imagine they'd be against such endeavors, especially considering how good the school is. Have you tried perusing their website for more info?

Yeah, I looked through the website and wasn't able to find anything conclusive. That being said, it is a pretty big site so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed it ha.

they have a ton. they are sent to students as they become available and as the grants for them have to be submitted. if you don't see one you like, you can apply for an MSEP scholarship of $1000 to do an idea you have.

here's what they told us last year at the interview:
After you interview, you're given a rating out of 100. If you are already above their arbitrary score for acceptance, you're accepted. If not, you wait.
Mid March was their last interview day, and they want to have open seats until they finish interviews so they always have a seat for that person that knocks their socks off. Before March, the people mostly accepted are OOS and really awesome IS. They know that once a lot of the OOS realize they didn't get a scholarship (May 1 or 15 I think) they will run back to where they got a scholarship or their home state school where is is a LOT cheaper.
After all interviews are done, they move their threshold score so that all 176 seats are filled (186 this year). The rest of the people are split into the waiting list. As people drop, they go down the list. It won't move much until Mid to late May.
The other thing to remember is that they are always running behind, and this year has the added challenge of the Montgomery campus....enjoy waiting.
Last year 2599 applied, 385 interviewed, and 236 were offered acceptances. Buena suerte!

I wonder what the rubric is.

I think at USA it's

up to 3 pts for MCAT
up to 3 pts for GPA
up to 4 pts for Interview

so, 10 possible points.


I'm wondering if for UAB, it's something like:

30 pts for MCAT
30 pts for GPA
30 pts for interview
5 pts for diversity (gender, URM)
5 pts for ECs

I'd add in that more females and URMs are also accepted before March. I think being female with good stats is worth a couple of extra points. I think UAB tries to "lock in" the strong stats females early to help with gender ratio. JMO

They know that once a lot of the OOS realize they didn't get a scholarship (May 1 or 15 I think) they will run back to where they got a scholarship or their home state school where is is a LOT cheaper.

385 interviewed, 236 offered acceptances. Good odds, especially since some of those 385 might have withdrawn before an acceptance was offered.

Still hoping for an acceptance!!! 🙂
