They do! Here's how it works:

  1. Decide what demographics they need to fill (female, URM, IS, non-trad, various other demographics)
  2. Choose the best applicants that fill the demographics. If they need 20 IS students, they select the top 20 ISers on their list, even if they have to dip into the second or third tiers. Same goes for all other demographics. You are a superstar if you can fill multiple demographic needs 🙂
  3. After picking for need, they determine how many spots they still need to fill with any type of student
  4. Fill those spots will the best students available

I would harken it as similar to the NFL draft. Sometimes a player is selected based on the team's need, while other times players are selected because they're they best athlete available. No matter which reason you're accepted for, you were accepted and that's all that matters in the end 😀

Great so it basically comes down to judging people by race and gender.,,,, I"m screwed.

Not necessarily. Some of the demographics are things like: strong research experience, interest in public health, abroad experiences, etc. etc.

Member of the essentially rejected middle tier ..sad.

I think it works such that they accept you if someone very similar to you (demographics, race, general numbers and ECs) turns down their acceptance. At this point, they aren't specifically looking for, say, URMs. It comes down to pure luck at this stage.

Representing the lower-third tier of the waitlist. Got the email yesterday as well. I guess I really bombed that MMI.

Yet you still have the enviable opportunity to choose between multiple acceptances. I suggest any school but VTC (it's my top choice).

...I wasn't complaining about my waitlist placement, I was putting my info out in the thread to let others know that Cinci's WL is truly divided into 3 tiers, and that your chances are probably good in top third. Unlike other schools (*cough* EVMS) that seem to place everyone in the top third.

Sorry to say but I decided on VTC awhile ago, my mdapps doesn't show that. But their waitlist does move a bit despite the small class size, so don't give up hope yet.

Chiming in for the middle tier, here. Keeping hope all the same and hoping my demographics help- female, OOS, non-trad, and perhaps even my ethnicity but it isn't Alaskan or Native American so not even sure that it matters, lol.

For all people on the mid-tier:

people last year got in off the wait list from the mid-tier before some people get in off the upper-tier. You still have a chance.

for the lower tier, sorry but I think you may be out of luck.

mid tier here as well.

Here's to hoping I hear something before July or never...The school I'm going to now starts on July 15th and I would hate to have to decide on what to do once I've already moved or even worse after I've already started (it's a DO school so I don't think the normal rules apply that once you've started you can't move but I could be wrong).

You would think they could come up with a better system, or at least move the may 15th date a few months earlier so there's not all this scrambling at the last minute..

Can someone post their top tier email? Just curious about what it said.

When do acceptances off the wait-list start going out approximately.. ?

Keeping fingers crossed!

Dear Applicant:

The Committee on Admissions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has finalized the Alternate List. We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for a place in the upper third of the List.

Although all positions in the class are currently filled, we anticipate openings within the next several months. Acceptances will be offered to applicants on the Alternate List as vacancies occur. It is important we have a current address and phone number where you can be reached. You will be receiving information from the Financial Aid Office over the next several weeks.

While we would like to provide you with a more specific estimate for an acceptance; unfortunately, we are unable to do so. The chances for an acceptance are greater for those in the upper third of the Alternate List than those in the middle or lower third. However, our experience over the past several years has varied greatly. If changes occur, we will communicate with you immediately. Please be patient, and we will notify you promptly of any change in your status.

We sincerely appreciate your cooperation, and thank you for your interest in the University of Cincinnati. Best wishes for a pleasant summer and for your future career.

Sincerely,

R. Stephen Manuel, Ph.D.
Assistant Dean of Admissions

We don't have to pay a deposit for May 15th do we? Just withdraw from other schools and fill out the Code of Conduct & Supplementary Form?

Did anyone else find "Dr." Stephen Manuel to be somewhat rude, condescending and arrogant? He always seems to have this tone of superiority and the things he said to people were really off-putting. And that ridiculous comb-over of his. I want to shave him bald.

:troll:

Got the estimated financial aid letter today...

100% loans 😡

Same. I also am confused as to why these are "estimates" and we'll receive the final letter in July. I know there is probably no reason to worry, but this makes me uncomfortable knowing that there is the possibility for change before July.

I'm a little upset about the just loans, but I don't think UC has that many resources to give to med students unfortunately. It's disappointing...

Isn't IS tuition around 30,000? And if you're OOS, you can qualify for IS tuition in the following years. How bad can it be?😕

IS tuition is only 30,000 for the first year. The next two it goes up to around 48,000.

Not to be crass, but I hope this discontent with OOS fin aid turns in more OOS withdrawals.

No, right now I'm going to OU-HCOM. Only first year students start in July...they do something called immersion for 5 weeks. It's anatomy (and some OMM) only just to get everyone on the same page before classes start.

I'm really upset about UC. Cincinnati is my hometown and I was really hoping to go back there (and the school is fantastic!). I interviewed back in September and called Dean Manuel after I was waitlisted to see what I needed to work on. He was pretty positive about my whole app, said my interview was great, they just had some questions about why I waited so long to apply (I'm a nontrad) and 2 withdraws I had during my postbacc, and basically told me I'd have no problem if I could explain these. I had good explanations for both so I was pretty surprised at my mid-tier spot on the waitlist. I'll be happy at OU, just wish UC hadn't given me such false hope....

oh well, life goes on and I'm still gonna be a doctor.

Is he pretty receptive of getting calls asking how you can improve your app? I was thinking of calling just to learn something since I'm waitlisted too, but I hear mixed things about him being nice about it or being not so receptive since it's a busy time.

I called back in January. You need to schedule a time with the admissions office so it fits his schedule. He actually called me a couple minutes ahead of schedule (surprised me haha). Our conversation was very brief and he sounded a bit rushed, but I got the information I was looking for to write a strong Letter of Interest. Could be a bit late now since the wait list is already ranked, but I see no harm in trying.

I talked to him back in October or November and he was very nice to me but it was a lot less hectic and stressful at that time (at least for me it was)....
like pachewisc said I'm not sure how much good it will do at this point since the list is already ranked and everyone says they pull based on demographics.

Alright, thanks for the info- I did write a letter of interest after my interview, so I guess I have done all I can do at this point!

What tier are you in on the waitlist?

What tier are you in on the waitlist?

I think I posted it somewhere in here already, but I am Mid-Tier. Not hoping for much, but hoping all the same.
After a really rough couple of years, it would probably make my whole life to get in here, but I understand anyone granted a spot on a waitlist at any school probably feels the same way 😛

Reading the Cincy wait list from 2008, it appeared that OOS and female tended to be the ones with the greatest chance od acceptance from the wait list. Do you think that will hold true now, or was it just the demographics of that cycle?

Although I'd like it to be true for this year, I think it's sort of difficult and also a bit reaching to try and extrapolate from what happened 5 cycles ago. As people say every single waitlist is going to be a bit different because there's a different mix in every app pool. It also depends on who drops from the accepted pool- they will likely be looking to fill a similar role.

withdrew today. IS non-traditional applicant. good luck everyone!

mmmm can't log in to medone anymore. not the best sign.

You might just need to update with a new PW. Happened to me a few weeks ago and then I had no issues logging in. It will say your PW is outdated.

Working fine for me now.

it let me log in again. not sure what that was all about. thanks for the help though.

anyone in upper third receive financial aid packets in the mail? last year's thread had some posts where this happened.

Withdrew my app a day or two ago -- Godspeed to everyone!

Anyone get off the middle tier waitlist yet?

I don't think it has started moving yet. Previous years' threads showed that the wait list began moving May 19-24. But who knows?

Which I find a bit strange. Both schools in my state have sent out a bunch of new acceptances on May 15th just as people gave up their spots.

Bump.

This should be the week we see the most movement, right? Maybe tomorrow?

meh, probably next week if we're being realistic. despite us all being ranked, i'm assuming they need time to sift through who they lost and who they want to replace them with.

Anyone get any wait list movement yet? I'm on the middle tier of the list. Realistically, does that mean my chances of getting an offer are slim?
