Can anyone comment on how important it is to have a car in Chicago or if we need to for school before m3/m4? Never lived in a big city before!

You'll be 100% fine for M1/M2 years if you put in even the slightest amount of planning in where you live. Only problem is grocery shopping, which can be a PITA if you don't have a car.

could you please elaborate a bit on this? do most students live within walking distance, or do most take the L?

thanks!

I've been waiting for quite a while...my application states "Acceptance and Deposit Received, Pre-Enrollment requirements not yet complete (Please see above)"

Seems like they're waiting on my transcript and hepatitis B form...anyway, how long does it take them to mail the campus selection back? I feel like I've been waiting for about 3 weeks so far...

I'm not a student (hoping to be), but I've lived in Chicago for the past 5 years. The medical school is located right off a pink and blue line stop on the L, so there are two train lines that run right by it.

I don't know if most students live within walking distance, but I'd be surprised if that's true. It's not a bad area or anything, but it's not great and with transportation it's really easy to live in a nicer area. College students all get an unlimited pass on the CTA too.

Having a car in chicago is doable and not a super huge hassle in most areas outside of the loop or near north side, but it does cost money.

+1 Same here!

I just logged in and my status has changed from "Applicant in Process" to "Interview Scheduling," and its a different screen with the 3 campus choices listed. Looks like I have an interview invitation pending??? Has this happened to anyone else? It says my Interview Letter Date is 2/15/2013, but I haven't received an email. Do they send interview invitations via usps postal mail or via email?

A lot of students, at least in the preclinical years, live within 10-15 minute walking distance from campus. I live about 10 min away and there's a ton of M1s and M2s around me.

Would you say a car is necessary? I'm very strongly leaning towards getting one, especially if it's needed for the M2 mini-rotations, but input would be nice.

That's an II, congrats 😀 They send both USPS and email, but sometimes the email is late. If you see a chart of dates and campuses, call admissions to ask!

Thank you! And thanks for the advice. Admissions said I will get something in the Postal Mail, but that they don't have any dates available right now (yikes-not sure what this means), so I will wait to receive the letter.

They get posted in batches. My guess is the last batch is full and they haven't posted the next one yet, so just keep checking in. The letter itself isn't too much, it just says you've been invited to interview, to check the chart of dates, and to call them (I actually think it was word for word the same as the email, so I'm not sure why they send both). And good luck 🙂

Thanks so much-that makes sense! 🙂

How did you go about finding an apartment and in what area? I've done a bit of looking, but I know certain areas are not the safest.

Congrats!! Definitely makes me feel better to se an II go out! I'm hoping for the best over here! Applicant in Process for 1 week now!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted since the last time I was here! Sorry for my absence, it's been a while. Although, I'm not too sure that coming back on here a week before our two hell weeks begin was a smart idea...

University Rentals owns a few apartments in the area. You can always contact them. All of these are about 10-12 minutes walking distance from school.

A few people also live in the Medical District Apartments. It's expensive, but offers the security of an apartment building and gets rid of the hassle of finding a place.

Craigslist and any other apartment services should also help.

I got an II as well today!! 2/15/13. So finally relieved! I have been in "Applicant in Progress/Process" for such a long time. Maybe we might get the same date.

But my concern right now is that since its already mid-Feb, I feel like my chance of getting in w/out being waitlisted is pretty low. I read somewhere on this thread that II/Acceptance rate is like 50-60%. Does that sound right?

Any thoughts?

During interview day the admissions person said they interview roughly ~900 applicants, accept ~600, and ~300 end up matriculating.

Congrats to you and everyone else who got an II today!

From the interview day presentation, the post-interview acceptance rate is ~75%, at least for in-staters. Though UIC is very clear that earlier is better, I'd still go. I mean, even if the rate will be a bit less than that for your interview day, you'd still have a pretty solid post-interview shot at acceptance in comparison to a lot of schools.

Oh I'm def going to the interview. I live pretty close to the Chicago campus. Just getting an idea on what I'm going to expect during and after the interview.

Hey everyone, congrats to the students who have gotten interviews and those who have already been accepted! Just received my interview invite by snail mail today (no e-mail yet) and I was wondering if anyone who's already interviewed could give any insight into their experience...any info would help. Thanks! (Sidenote: In-state, interviewing @ Chicago)

Has anyone who was accepted in the last round not received their campus assignment yet? Or am I the only one? 🙁

When did you send in your secondary? I sent mine in late, and was just trying to get an idea of when I would hear back on any change in my applicant status. Thanks!

Gotcha - guess I've seen a bunch of people recently who consider not attending an interview if their chances are low and I figured that was implicit.

Here's my sum-up of my Chicago interview:

The med school building is an older building with a lot of character - a plus if you're me, but perhaps a con if you want new and shiny. There are two groups of interviewees, morning and afternoon. I was in the afternoon group, which meant that as I was arriving, the morning group was just finishing up their interviews and getting ready for our presentation (I think I'm remembering this all correctly but I might be wrong). Then we had lunch, which seems to vary between different days. We had Chinese food 😀. Current students were there to answer any questions we had. I think the tour was after lunch. Then we all came back to the same room where we had been before and started the interview schedule. Everyone has three one-on-one interviews - one with a current student, one with a faculty member or other UIC staff member, and one with an admissions committee member. Admissions staff members or the interviewers themselves will lead you to your interview locations.

For me, other than the MMI, this was the interview where I encountered the most 'ethical situation' questions, some of which were very straightforward and others which seemed a bit like a guessing game. Two of my three interviews were very chill, and one of them was actually quite stressful. I left being pretty worried that I had screwed up the interview, but ended up getting accepted, so don't worry too much if you found an interview stressful.

As always, with any interview, YMMV. Good luck to you guys and everyone else with interviews coming up!

For those of you that had to complete the background check because of an acceptance at UIC, did your status change before or after receiving the background check request email? I received the email yesterday, and I think it can only be UIC asking me to do it, but no status change. I'm just insanely curious about what school has waitlisted or conditionally accepted me. Thanks.

So Little Italy/Pilsen? Do many students live in East Village or the Loop? Thanks for all your help!

Glad I'm not the only one! I might call soon to see if they mailed it.
Called today. The admissions office said they hadn't heard back from the committee about which campus I would be assigned to.

From people I've talked to, I've been told to stay away from Pilsen. Also try to live east of campus. Most of the crime happens to the West

Tomorrow could be another anxious day for those of us waiting for acceptances. :luck:

Idk, I'd totally live in Pilsen and have some good friends who live there. You know, just use your best judgment, but there are definitely some nicer areas/apartments with still very reasonable rent prices. Plus, tons of delicious Mexican food!

I agree, I live in Pilsen as well. Its not as a bad as people say. But, the medical district is not safe from crime either.

2 years ago a Rush medical student was shot pretty much right outside campus. Its sounds dramatic but this is the ONLY incident I've ever heard of happening in the immediate area. Its pretty chill up till western avenue, and really not that bad a little past there.

Ideally you want to live in close vicinity of Taylor street

Yea, we had pizza at my interview. It was nice that they escort you to your interviews. @ the MMI, I didn't know UIC had MMIs, but then again I didn't really know what MMIs were until after I interviewed there.

Nah, I didn't mean that UIC has an MMI, I was just comparing UIC to another school I interviewed at that did have an MMI. I think to count as an MMI a school would have something more like 6-8 interviewers. Though three is on the high side for one-on-one interviews.

Hi! My application status changed from "applicant in process" to "application is in process" I'm out of state and I applied a little late in the cycle. I don't think this is good news, but I'm wondering if someone had a similar experience and could share his/her result? Thanks!

Generally Little Italy. Most of your options will be on Laflin/Lexington/Flournoy/Loomis/Taylor. If you live here, it's a 10-15 walk to the school. Plus, if you're feeling lazy or it's cold outside, the bus is a short walk away.

From people I've talked to, I've been told to stay away from Pilsen. Also try to live east of campus. Most of the crime happens to the West

There's crime everywhere, especially if you're stupid. There's been a few robberies around me and I live in Little Italy. Best thing is to walk with friends (if you live on campus), take Red Car after 11pm, and don't talk on your phone or listen to headphones while you're walking.

Also, just FYI, the med building at the Chicago campus is starting renovations (for those of you that like shiny new things). Edelstone (the study lounge) is starting renovations this summer, and the lecture halls are starting next year. They should be done by the time you guys are M2s.

Does anyone know when UIC and other schools will release tuition rates for the 2013-2014 school year?

Also, I think for UIC undergrads, entering students are locked into their entering year's tuition (ie, they are not subject to any tuition increases in future years). Does this apply to the medical school as well?

The crime everywhere, especially if you're stupid, is really true in Chicago. However, garfield park is bad enough that it's smart to avoid at just about all costs. Violent crime rate was about 4,000 per 100k in 2005, it's been a really bad year city wide so far, and things usually get worse when the weather gets better.

Live at the med school or east of it is a good general rule.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Should I fill out fafsa information for UIC if I have had a few months of "no final decision?" I don't want to jinx myself, but I would also like to be able to afford to go to school if I do end up getting an acceptance. I really don't know the protocol for this so I was hoping someone with some previous experience could weigh in. Thanks!

Yes definitely fill it out. It doesn't hurt at all, and in the event you are accepted later this season, they will be able to give you a financial aid package quicker. Good luck!

Do you mean there won't be an Edelstone our M1 year?! It looked new when I toured, not sure why it would need a renovation. That kind of bums me out, I really looked forward to that space.

Judging by the website, UIC only requires a FAFSA (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and since pretty much every single school requires the FAFSA, all you have to do to make sure UIC gets a copy is put in their school code. So it doesn't take any extra effort, and you'll save yourself extra hassle down the road if you do get in!

As a current M1, I can't resist putting in a good word for Pilsen. I've had friends in the neighborhood for years and it just keeps getting better. Yes, there is gang violence, but I am a women and I feel perfectly safe here, even at night. My apartment is huge, dog friendly, with parking, and costs a fraction of what my peers are paying to live near Taylor Street. (Hint: Taylor Street is lame, there are way cooler places to live if you are going to pay the premium.)

Also, for those of your still waiting for interviews, keep your chin up! I didn't get my invite til the end of February, didn't interview til the end of March, didn't get accepted til the end of April, and I STILL got a spot in Chicago and here I am kicking ass and taking names. So good luck. UIC is amazing.
