For the pic I would just get a parent or friend to take a shot of you with your back to a wall in a brightly lit area. You should try to look somewhat professional if you can; just throw on a shirt and tie for the picture.
 
No secondary yet for me. :/

Then again, I'm applying MSTP so the timing may be a bit different.

I'm also MSTP, haven't heard anything as of yet either. Hope that is the case haha 🙂

Me too. Is anyone an in-state re-applicant that has received a secondary? UNC uses different committees for re-applicants vs. first time applicants (as well as MSTP) so the timing is likely different for all of them.

Judging from last year's thread (probably not a very accurate way to judge these things, but the best I can think of), MSTP secondaries didn't come out until a week or so after MD only secondaries. Really hoping to get a secondary to UNC, it's an amazing place!
 
hey to anyone who's uploaded a photo to the secondary -- did anyone figure out good dimensions/size for it? mines showing up but looks weird and i don't know if its going to stay like that with my app or what.

Mine got all distorted too, I ended up cropping my photo (taken with an iphone) to be perfectly square, then reduced the size to 192x192 pixels, worked like a charm
 
I verified 6/5 and still haven't gotten the secondary. IS 3.9/3.9/29P anyone else on the same boat as me??

Sit tight. Historically, as an IS (first time?) applicant with those stats you will get a secondary/II

yeah nothing here..verified 6/21. I'm a wolfpacker as well, hopefully us state people will get some good news tomorrow!

I got one last year with similar stats. you should get one!

btw IS reapp here no secondary yet 🙁 i agree with above that they have different committees so the timelines are a bit different. its a little nerve-wracking tho....
 
Any ideas on the probability of acceptance given an interview at Chapel Hill for IS and OOS applicants? Moreover, I'm interested in UNC's emphasis on clinical experience: are volunteering and shadowing enough?

Look at the MSAR for chances. And UNC doesn't require clinical experience, but like most schools, they like it if you have it.

From what I've heard: if you don't have really high stats or lots of research experience, then they like to see clinical experience that's more hands-on like EMT/CNA/Phleb/Scribe/etc. It's not impossible to get in without any of these, though it's more of a crapshoot.

Nearly 60% of IS applicants get an interview. Only 3% of OOS applicants get one. It's one of the most OOS-unfriendly schools in the country.

the MSAR says that in 2012, 517 IS were offered interview of which 147 got in(28.4%), and 122 OOS got interview and 23 got in(18.9%)
 
Thanks for the info tarheel and grape. I'm currently an NC resident and will be applying next year. In the meantime, I was looking for a bit more clinical experience. Grape, I noticed you mentioned scribing. Are any substantial scribe companies in North Carolina that anyone can recommend?
 
I'm starting to wonder why I applied here when they're so averse to OOS applicants.
 
How do you insert a paragraph or line break in the short responses? Every time I generate the report it puts my two paragraphs together...

Does the picture have to look professional? I have a picture of myself holding a pretty fancy origami I made lol. I don't know if they want the picture for formal purposes or if they just want to know more about us as a person.

They use it for identification. That's all.
 
Do you have to answer the re-applicant question if you are a re-applicant but not to UNC?

It's not a requirement that the photo look professional, but I recommend that it is a passport style photo. You want to make a good impression on the adcom the first time they see you, and remember, you are applying to professional school.

Does anyone know how to make line breaks in the secondary?
 
Hey, here is a simple method I used because I didn't have anything fancy like Photoshop:
1) Right-click the picture file and click Properties
2) Select the tab that labeled Details and note the Horizontal and Vertical resolution.
*Usually it is 96 dpi [dots per inch (linear)]. So, If you want a 2" x 2" picture, you would calculate:
(2 in x 96 dpi) = 192 pixels.
3) Resize your image in a photo editing program (ie. MS Paint) using the Pixels option.
4) Set the Horizontal and Vertical Pixels to 192 Pixels.
5)Save and Send

Statistically speaking you have a ~1 in 3 chance of getting in as an NC resident if you receive an interview. However, I cannot overstate the importance of the interview at UNC. If your interviewer likes you, they personally advocate for you as a voting member of the admissions committee. On the other hand, if they don't like you, they wont even bring up your application for discussion at the committee meetings, and your chance of getting in will be extremely small. For this reason, I would recommend doing mock interviews as the best way to increase your chance of getting in to UNC, unless you have a significant lack of clinical experience or any other important aspect of a good medical school application, in which case you should focus on that first.
 
I called them up today and they said they're not even going to look at the photo; it was supposed to be taken out. So no worries about that!
 
Any reapplicants get secondaries yet? still waiting... :/

I'm not sure I've ever seen someone with a "T" on the written MCAT subsection before hahaha. Hang tight, I'm sure your secondary will come soon!

honestly i think they assign MCAT writing grade letters at random...i got cut off on my last essay because i ran out of time.
 
Secondary Received for MSTP today. Does anybody know if secondary=interview for IS MSTP applicants? I would guess not since MSTP programs aren't supposed to have a state bias, but I can always hope right?

not sure but i doubt it. i think the 2ndary=ii is just for first time IS MD apps
 
On the secondary - when it asks if you are a re-applicant, does this mean a re-applicant to UNC, or a re-applicant in general?

Also, for those of you who have already filled out the secondary, how much is the supplemental application fee? I am OOS and wondering if I should even apply considering only 3% OOS are granted interviews...

Does anyone remember seeing anything in any of the emails about unc being receptive to in the area emails? I'm not really wanting to do one but I know other schools in NYC are okay with it and traveling is expensive 🙁

.. Although I probably won't get an ii anyway since I'm out oos haha but thought id ask! 🙂
 
Giraffe, I've never known for an in-the-area email to hurt your chances, so I would suggest just doing it
