Us news and reports data. Whatever unc submitted to them I guess.

I believe that is 147 IS matriculants--which would make sense. The total class size is 160, so 147 being 91% of the class is on par with all other statistics I've heard regarding IS to OOS ratio.

So the good news is, if you have an interview invite, you have a great shot a an acceptance!

Yeah I wonder if everyone who interviewed got that email. Of course my applicant mind is over analyzing the wording and thinking it means good things to come

My thoughts exactly. In the words of my adviser: "Take it as a good sign and move on with your life until you find out something more concrete."

Where did you get 147? That would mean 32% of the 215 total accepted students are OOS. That's not right. I believe only about 10% of accepted students are OOS. Which would mean they accept roughly 193 IS, which is 41.5% of those interviewed.

That link doesn't give enough info to accurately calculate the percent of in-state interviewees who are accepted. I don't have anything in front of me right now to reference, but the stats i've seen are more in line with what GrabSlamBoot said...about ~30% of in-state applicants who are also interviewed are ultimately accepted.

This is somewhat speculative, but i imagine there is a much higher percentage of "accepted" OOS applicants than "matriculated" OOS students because they are more likely than the average in-state UNC applicant to get into other really great schools (like hopkins, penn, etc). To summarize: % of OOS students in the student body =/= % of OOS students offered admission. Check out this page; it's old data but you can see what I'm talking about: http://www.medicalschoolsinusa.com/university-of-north-carolina-chapel-hill-school-of-medicine/ 81% of in-state accepted applicants ended up matriculating, vs only 42% of out of staters. Also note the ~30% acceptance rate for in-state interviewees.

In any case JoeM, to answer your original question about how important the interview is; stats could possibly hold you back even after interview, but it is true that at UNC, your interview plays a bigger role than it does at other schools. This is because one of your interviewers is a voting member of the admissions committee and will advocate on your behalf to get you in. Bottom line: if they really like you during interview, you'll probably have a great shot. At other schools, interviewers have little to no role in the actual selection process; they simply fill out an evaluation form and forward it to the admissions committee. In these circumsances, the degree to which your interviewer is impressed with you might not get conveyed clearly enough.

According to the MSAR, there are 147 IS matriculants and 23 OOS matriculants. So, if 42% of OOSers that are offered admission matriculate, then 54 OOSers are offered admission and 161 ISers are offered admission. So, about 35% of IS interviews end in an acceptance. I guess we were both a little off.

It's worth noting, however, that of the 20 or so reapplicants who posted on SDN in the last two cycles combined, 75% who were offered an interview were accepted. I'd heard many times that UNC sees reapplicants as "determined and resilient" which didn't make much sense to me because they have such high standards for improvement from the unsuccessful cycle. It seems that if you improve your application enough and are able to get an interview, being a reapplicant is actually a plus. Now, obviously this is very unofficial data, but still...

I think you are probably right about grades/MCAT scores after interviews. I do believe that they wouldn't invite you for an interview if they really had a problem with your stats--that's what screens are for. It would be a waste of their time interviewing someone that they knew on paper would never be accepted. Although that doesn't mean that stats (or other parts of the application, for that matter) don't come back into play later on.

When you interviewed last cycle, did you not do as well as you would have liked for both interviews or just the adcom member interview? Reason I ask is that I feel like I did not do well with my adcom member, but did much better with the second interviewer. Wondering if I shot my chances with that. I realize that both the interviewers meet, but maybe the adcom just overrules or something. Thanks

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but I was in precisely your situation. My ADCOM interview was really bad...it was my first interview and I was too nervous and over-prepared. My second, non-ADCOM interview went pretty well. I can't be sure of what happened behind the scenes, but I truly didn't give my ADCOM interviewer reason to have confidence in me, so I doubt he advocated for my acceptance.

That said, you never can be certain how your ADCOM interviewer perceived you...maybe you did better than you thought, so don't count yourself out yet! Also, if you ultimately don't make it this cycle, please remember (and recall what others have said on this thread) that UNC is very re-applicant friendly. In any case, good luck! :luck:

Thank you for letting me know. I was too nervous as well, so definitely didn't feel like I made a good impression on the adcom. Thanks again.

+1

I've read countless posts by folks who thought an interview went horribly (including a girl who started crying during the interview) but were then accepted. Like NCPremed said, it's hard to know how the interviewer perceived you.

I just found this: "As a state-assisted institution, we give preference to North Carolina residents. Approximately 20 non-residents are accepted each year."

http://www.med.unc.edu/admit/admissions-standards

If that's true, then a lot of OOSers who are admitted choose to attend. No surprises there, it's an awesome school!

And. . .. it's OCTOBER!!! anyone know if the committee will meet on the 15th? then the REAL waiting begins. . .

Last year, they started calling people with acceptances some time in mid-October. They typically called every other Monday night if I remember correctly. It was always very sad getting unidentified calls on Monday nights that were not from UNC haha.

I'm sure the committee has met by now. Interviews started sept 10th and last year they started calling the first Monday after the 15th. This year the 15tg is a Monday so I expect we may hear something. Fingers crossed!

I'm sure someone will hear on the 15th. Like GrabSlamBoot said, according to the threads from the last couple of years, it's usually the first Monday after the 15th that they start making calls.

Did anyone else get an email from "Prospective Student Recruitment"?

I'm guessing people who already interviewed wouldent receive this.

That's true. I'll be there next week.

They may not have done this for the earliest interviews b/c it's run by students and they were just getting settled in to the semester.

KDiz- please just accept at harvard or hopkins and withdraw all your other apps- I can't possibly compete when your app is also on the table.

seriously...how do i compete with this.

we don't, we just have to be thankful that there is only one KDiz, who can only go to one school. actually, KDiz could probably handle two or three schools academically, especially with one of those time things Hermione had 😉.

seriously though, I'd kill for those stats but didn't have that kind of motivation as an undergrad- best of luck to you ballers and hopefully I'll be lucky enough to call some of you classmates.

Interview Invite yesterday afternoon! I'm a re-applicant and was complete a few months ago, but UNC originally lost my application (it was sent to the wrong program) and then it took a bit of detective work to track it down. This application has been a huge headache, so glad to finally get some good news.

Congrats!

Congrats! When did you actually submit your application? I am a re-applicant and submitted in mid August. Have not heard anything since and I was just curious. Thanks!

I submitted 8/29 but the MD admissions office didn't actually receive my application until much later. Some how it ended up with the MD/PHD office. I know there has been some speculation about filling out residency paper work, I got the residency forms on 9/9 so maybe if you did too that could be a good sign???

Rejected today, OOS, 3.7, 37Q. Good luck to the rest of you.

rejected as well, OOS 35Q, 3.75, 3.75

Rejected. Good luck to everyone else still in the running 🙂

Rejected post-secondary. OOS. 3.8 cGPA/3.7sGPA. 35Q.

For those rejected, when did you submit your secondaries?

Tough luck for those OOSers getting some rejections, but UNC is well known for being unfriendly towards OOS applicants.

Looking at some of the amazing applicants that are being rejected, I am VERY glad that I am a resident of North Cackalacky

How long does it take for them to verify NC residency? And do they notify you when they receive the form? I mailed mine earlier this week and think they would have gotten it by now, but I haven't heard anything from them yet.

That residency form will only matter if you're accepted. It's used for tuition purposes, not acceptance.

Rejected yesterday as well. OOS. Complete 7/31.

Interviewed 9/17. The interview day was very relaxed and somewhat boring as we spent most of the day sitting around in the same room.

So anxious to hear back on Oct. 15. This is hands down my top choice school. I would love to spend another 4 years in Chapel Hill.

Has anyone that's OOS received an interview here? If so stats please?
