I'm expecting an email response about this soon. I'll let you know what I find out...

Did you get any news?😕

For housing, why do people live in Graduate Hospital/Center City when rent is literally half as much in West Philly? I understand living there means you're closer to restaurants and bars, but is that the only benefit? Seems West Philly is much closer to Penn.

50th and Baltimore isn't that close, and that's around where a lot of the cheaper housing is. The neighborhoods feel very different. I imagine the folks who choose to live in Center City feel like they're getting what they're paying for or they wouldn't be doing it.

More expensive areas are usually more expensive because they're more desirable. Remember, cost is one of many factors that people optimize for when choosing a place to live, and affordability really depends on your personal financial situation.

Also, based on my limited experience, it seems much more doable to live without a car in Center City, which can add up to quite a lot with gas, insurance, and parking.

PM me if you want more specifics about my individual perspective.

On other threads (Columbia, Yale, UChicago) some people have been announcing being accepted off the waitlist. There hasn't been any news like that on this thread so far. Is it because Penn has not started using their waitlist yet or are the newly accepted students just not on this site?
Have there been any new additions to the fb group since Wednesday?
Just trying to gauge what's going on 🙂

Hey guys, I've got a general question about waitlist I've been wanting to ask: After May 15, if you get off a waitlist from a school and accept the spot, does that mean you can no longer be accepted off the waitlist from another school? In other words, once you accept one waitlist offer, the other schools in which you were waitlisted will know and will no longer offer you their spot?

I'm not sure if the other schools will know you got an offer off a waitlist, but you most definitely can remain on as many waitlists as you want until you begin orientation in the fall.

There are the occasional stories of people who osmose upwards over the course of the summer, getting gradually accepted off wait lists at ever-better schools and switching multiple times. I don't think that applies to 99% of people because their wait list options are similarly ranked, or because they just don't like the uncertainty, but if people can switch four or five times, I'm sure twice is just fine.

West Philly is not that great of a place to live if you're not an undergraduate. The housing that's actually near Penn is not that cheap, and once you get further out (>48th), you actually start to tread into sketchy territory. Center city, especially Graduate Hospital has a lot of places that are actually very affordable. I would say 3/4 of my class probably lives in center city as opposed to west philly.

You can remain on other school's waitlists, even if you came off one. You will be able to remain on waitlists until the first day of your orientation, at which point no medical school can accept you off their waitlist anymore.

The schools you are waitlisted at will know which school you are currently planning to matriculate at (and your other acceptances for that matter). If there is a school you are still interested in after accepting a position off a waitlist, it would be prudent to let those schools know you are still interested.

No waitlist movement yet? Anyone here anything?

What's the best way to find roommates and housing? (I didn't attend Preview)

Probably by using the "roommate list," which is under the "accept" tab. I haven't used it yet, so I don't know how well it works...

Long time lurker here that finally caved and made an account.

I know it's been asked a couple of times already but I haven't seen any responses yet. I'd just like to reiterate that if anyone has any information at all about waitlist movement this year, I and most likely myriad others would be extremely grateful.

The uncertainty is quite agonizing at this stage!

Thanks for any news and tremendous congratulations to all students already admitted.

Incoming MS1 here. Full disclosure: I have not spoken to anyone in the admissions office, so I have no "official" information. Based on threads from prior cycles, it seems that the waitlist movement has been rather minimal (more like a trickle than a flood) in recent years. Having said that, I met somebody today that was accepted from the waitlist on 5/17. Take that for what you will. Good luck!

I'm a longtime lurker on here as well. I was waitlisted back in March. Gaye Sheffler contacted me on May 17th and I received a financial aid award this past week. I accepted and will be happily matriculating at Penn in the Fall. I look forward to meeting the other incoming students in August. Best of luck to those of you still on the waitlist!

Were you one of the lucky ones that got invited to Penn Preview weekend?

Would you mind posting your stats and general info (like gender, whether you're a nontraditional applicant or a traditional one etc)?

Sure. I'm a nontraditional, male applicant (finishing a PhD right now).
MCAT: 38
cum undergrad GPA 3.6
undergrad science GPA 3.8
grad GPA 3.96

good luck!!

Also a longtime lurker on SDN... Got the call from Gaye on May 17th as well with an acceptance off the waiting list, financial aid package info last week, and will definitely be matriculating. I wasn't one of the students invited to Penn Preview and am a fairly average Penn applicant (37, 3.97/3.98, fairly substantial research/clinical experience). Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Any word on movement since the 17th? Unable to obtain any clear answers from the Office of Admissions.

Anybody know when student health insurance starts?

Haha oh my god. For those of you who are not an "average Penn applicant" - I offer you hope, as I am not up to those standards, and am (likely) matriculating.

The application opens tomorrow, and you have the option of starting coverage July 1.

To clarify: The insurance office told me to email them in June if I wanted coverage starting July 1.

Thank you so much for replying and letting us know your stats!

I have heard people describe the Penn waitlist as "agonizing" (now that I am on it I completely agree) and I know that very few spots are offered (like 15ish), but does any movement happen in June? Or is it all over?

For the PA child abuse form we have to fill out, we're asked to check one of the boxes for the purpose of the clearance and none of the options really fit med student. Do we just check "school employee" or "employment with a significant likelihood of regular contact with children" even though we're not an employee?

Man... I went and left the application station site before printing the child abuse form 😛 oops! Anyone know if this is the right form?

Thanks, I appreciate it 🙂

Time to learn what a money order is and how to get one, wtf :bang:

Dear Applicant,

The class entering in August 2013 has been filled. Although the Committee on Admissions was impressed with your application, it has been unable to offer you a position in our first year class starting in the fall of 2013. Please check your status page for official notification.

Yup; in a way, I'm glad to finally have resolution/finality to this... though that may be because I ended up getting waitlisted 4 places 😛

I just got the child abuse clearance results in the mail and also realized this was due yesterday. How the hell was I supposed to get this form to Penn by June 28th when it took 2 weeks to get the results (and I sent the form with the money order 2 days after we were told about it under the orientation tab)!? Oh well, I guess my first med school assignment is late haha.

I took it to mean that we should send in the child abuse clearance form by the 28th so that we would be able to send in the results before orientation... Otherwise, they'd have people wait until a week or two before orientation to send in the forms and then be screwed by the processing delay. At least that is what I hope...
