2013-2014 Albany Medical College Application Thread

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr indeed! Perhaps they're thinking that some people (like our friend upthread) will auto-withdraw, which affects the other offers?
Yeah. The only thing I can think of is that they have a certain number of acceptances they want to send out at this point, so they're working their way down the list and deciding accordingly.

Maybe...but I'm just not gonna let it get to my head anymore. This process is driving me up a wall. First they say decisoins are released "sometime last week". That didn't happen. Then they said it's Monday. But only a handful of decisions are out. Now it's "sometime this week, but only once in the morning".

Isn't that what "under consideration" is for?
The way I'm thinking about it now is the following (complete conjecture, and I'm convinced I have no idea how this process actually works):
1) All those who interviewed and were reviewed at a committee meeting are currently ranked based on GPA/MCAT/interview.
2) At this point in the season, they want to have X acceptances out... where X is something like
([# interviewed so far] / [total # to be interviewed]) x ([class size or # acceptances that will likely be sent]).
3) They offer some number today, the first day, to the top (3.8-4.0 with mid 30s MCAT and a good interview; LizzyM ~ 70 +).
4) A certain number of these top people with decline/withdraw immediately. This leaves more acceptances open to offer to the next bunch of the list. Additionally, since it's now further into the season, X will be bigger than it was before. At certain points during the rest of the season (weekly?) they'll offer more acceptances to the top of the list. Rinse and repeat.
5) At some point, maybe after a couple of rounds not making the "top" group, we're notified that we're under further consideration out of courtesy.

This makes sense in my head, at least!

Makes as much sense as it could. This process makes no sense.

Have your statuses changes at all? Mine still says I have an interview scheduled for September..

Accepted! 😀 Interviewed 10/4

Has anyone that interviewed on October 30th got accepted yet? Sorry if I missed your post already.

Honestly if I didn't know this was for a med school, I would think this is some sort of pyramid scheme. I think what was said in the interview was like 1,100 interviews for 90 spots w/ good retention leading to only ~280 acceptances given out. So why interview four times that? Something doesn't really add up to yourstruly.

Anyway. Good luck everyone. What a process.

I think this may be more or less the strategy. I was accepted today, interviewed 9/20. Albany only gives 3 days to make a decision on whether or not to hold a spot.

What's the cost to hold a spot?

Just got an email that I was not immediately accepted but am under consideration. I'm disappointed bc I really liked this school, and thought MMIs went really well.

33 MCAT 3.49sGPA 3.62cGPA

Under consideration as well. Most likely will withdraw anyways.

Same, under consideration. For any neurotic pre-meds, they average the interview scores and rank us- that becomes the list of alternates, which they draw from after they finish interviewing. Final decisions in June. Good luck, everyone who hasn't heard yet!

Under consideration...It is gonna be a long process...

under consideration earlier today. I'll probably withdraw

whoops, sorry. They "rank on the basis of [your] average committee vote" post interview. Edit post wouldn't load. my bad for repost.

🤔 UC email for me as well.

Good luck to all those on this (seemingly) long list. If you do have other acceptances and would probably not attend Albany anyway, help out your fellow SDN brethren move up the list! (Shameless post lol)

Yeah. They say that they won't start drawing from the list until after interviews are completed, but it seems that, in previous years, they did accept people from "under consideration" well before June.

Edit: haha -- totally agree with nyc. Withdraw, all ye with other acceptances! ...Please?

UC email just received, and that's 0/3 so far.

Not accepted nor received a UC email. Must mean rejection? I must be really terrible at MMIs. Already 1 reject at MMI school.

Flat out rejected email, I was going to withdraw due to a better acceptance but not gonna lie I was leaving my app in for an ego boost. Oh well. Good luck everyone.

not post-interview right?

Rejected post-interview. I thought my MMI went very well, but if I have to pick a reason, it must have been my low MCAT verbal and some of my interview answers that might have been premature. Good luck everyone else and congrats for those with acceptances!

Rejected post-interview, although I did meet some great students on interview day who I know will make an excellent class there...

Mind me asking how low? I'm interviewing next week with so-so verbal.

31 MCAT with 8 verbal. But at the same time, since I got an interview at least, I am thinking that it was more about interviews that did not go well. I am not quite sure. I really hope for some feedback on my interviews, although I am already accepted elsewhere.

I have 7 on VR and I just received UC status this morning, so maybe it was more about the interview and the overall application. Again, I have no idea.

With regards to the UC status, I see movement from UC straight to acceptance from past years. However, in the email it seems like they were saying that they will only pull people into the class from the list after interviewing everyone. Now we just need to relax and enjoy the ride.

Thanks for sharing, mine is same as yours. I haven't done an MMI yet this season, only traditional interviews but have read up on them. Any pointers? Thanks again - and CONGRATS on your acceptance so far.... I'm at post interview committee complete for another school. Wait is torture!

I interviewed 10/24, still no news from anyone from those dates? I am getting a little anxious seeing all of the emails going out. :/

I was 10/30 and haven't heard anything. Not looking good though as no acceptances went out today.

Maybe they still haven't reviewed us yet. I would just LOVE for Albany to be an acceptance. Then I could know that I will be going to med school next year....

I went to the interview not expecting much, but I really liked the atmosphere and the sim room. It seemed like a place I would enjoy attending.

THAT's good news! I was getting very sad thinking that I would have to wait until June to know!

Post-interview rejection here as well! I am bummed because, as I said above, I liked it there, but I can't complain, thank heavens. To future AMC hopefuls: ignore the haters, it's a nice place, apply and let them decide, then go and check it out if you do get an interview. There is absolutely nothing wrong with AMC as far as I saw.

What the heck?! I thought AMC puts everyone who isn't immediately accepted on the UC pile after interviewing? You folks who said you've been post-interview rejected seem like awesome candidates. (Yes, I may have stalked your mdapps...:ninja:)

I'm kind of puzzled...

I would really like to second this.

Not that it is at all relevant to the school itself, but both of my tour guides had chosen AMC over similarly ranked schools. They loved the administration, environment, student body, and opportunities outside the classroom. The biggest thing that stood out to me was that the students were encouraged and supported by faculty to pursue their interests. If they wanted to do an away rotation at a hospital in a rural setting, for example, the administration would make it happen. Similarly, if they wanted to pursue research opportunities (an important factor to me) on campus, the administration would help bridge the divide between the graduate and medical school. The only significant drawback appears to be the price tag.

I am grateful to be given the opportunity to consider AMC my new home next year. Nevertheless, I left my interview day thinking that Albany had a rich history, proven track record, and amazing student body. I did not get the impression that the place scrapes the bottom of the barrel and accepts people who otherwise wouldn't have gotten into medical school. I have no doubt that many more people would choose to attend AMC over other schools if they lowered their tuition and updated some of their facilities. I also thought that they did a great job with their MMI in making it low-stress and conversational, very much unlike the 4 other MMI's I've been on so far.

Just thought I would add a different perspective.

Anyone else interviewing on 2/24? I know that's pretty late, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the long shot.

Your interview date has no bearing on the score that you receive. You will have the same chance of getting in as someone who interviewed a month ago.

Anyone interview on October 30 that has heard anything?? Acceptance hold or rejection?!?
