2013-2014 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
received the alternate email today, was previously UC. I'm a little confused--the email says there are spots still open. Is this a result of people not responding to acceptance offers yet? Or are they going to offer acceptances immediately from the alternate list? I'm just a bit confused on why they still need an alternate list if they have not filled the class.

I'm guessing they're waiting on open offers and/or want to wait and see who is still interested before offering acceptances (no point in offering to people on the UC list if they would no longer consider attending, right?).

I believe that, at the point they make the alternate list, all interviewees have been reviewed at committee and this is the "final" step in creating a ranked list to fill the class.

johnamo, makes sense! So stressful though. :/ sorry about your tough spot -- this is why I think this whole process needs to end sooner. This whole keeping candidates hanging for months on end needs to stop. There should be a universal date where schools have to finalize their classes and that is it. I've heard too many stories of people getting accepted off wait lists as they are driving across the country moving into their other school's housing...

I just checked last year's thread. Alternate List emails/invites are sent in batches. I guess that means the sooner you get it, the better chance you will get an offer?

Wow, this is stressful. Whether to take a waitlist spot and see what happens... or not and just go with my current plans. I'm moving tomorrow morning to my DO school.. plus I've already paid some tuition, signed a year lease, and bought a car there 😕!

Which DO starts that early??

Michigan State-- orientation starts 6/11 and classes 6/16! Haha I definitely wish there were a few extra months.

@dr2453, thanks for your nice remark. I'm thankful to be in a position of having at least one acceptance, but it definitely could turn into a tough decision.

Oh wow what?? Are you doing an optional program there for the summer? Or do classes actually go from June to June?

MSUCOM starts anatomy in the summer as a foundation for the Fall block of classes. It's just how the curriculum is planned! I like the idea in theory, but it definitely chops off a serious chunk of decision-making time.

If it's any consolation I've heard that MSUCOM is well-respected and if you're in-state the price is very reasonable. Anyway, made the alternate list again so I get to get my hopes up again only to have them crushed mid-August.

A bit off topic but did SDN get rid of PM's? I haven't been on in a while.

Anyone else see the "Alternate Response" link on their online application system? It just appeared on mine and when I click it, it says that the deadline for Alternate Response is passed. Does anybody know what this means? Also, is the email issue fixed? Got no reply when I called admissions...

I don't even have that link.... I still have the supplemental application, application status, etc. stuff that was there before. Welp.

Amc sent an email telling me to access their online application to answer the question. I declined the alternate list because I can't stand the way this school does things especially with how it is ranked. I just wanted to find out if I would get accepted so that I could deny them. I'm over that now.

How's AMC's financial aid? Getting some money would be the only reason for me to stay on the waitlist.

I was actually curious about this too. I read in one of the previous year's threads that you get like 3K if your EFC is low on your FAFSA. But apart from that, there are no significant scholarships for first years (at least that I've heard of). During my interview day, the students did say you would get slightly more as an upperclassman, but nothing big.

I think that's what I heard too. Thanks!

Check again, mine just updated from this weekend. The page now asks if you want to be considered an alternate candidate for the freshman class of 2014. You should have until June 3rd to respond.
I don't know if this matters but my "Alternate Response Form" says to respond by June 4th, 2014...

When I got the form yesterday, I noticed it initially said June 3rd and then later in the day changed to June 4th.

Now that I think about it, I recall initially seeing a June 3rd deadline... or maybe it is just me being paranoid.

Didn't the email say to fill it out within 3 days of receiving the email?

I knew it was MSU. Good luck! Which campus did you get assigned to?

Just got the email that I was put on their alternate list... so are you guys saying that not everyone from UC list makes it onto there?
+2 Do you guys know if I can/should send them a letter of intent/update now that I am on the alternate list?

I felt like they were pretty clear during my interview day that they do not accept update letters, but maybe I'm remembering incorrectly?

Im pretty sure you're right. Once you're ranked there is nothing you can do to change it so sending letters of intent or further support won't do oyu any good

Just got accepted today via email! I dont know what to do, I was all set to go to NYIT-COM

Do you want to go to a school where you have 225 classmates with an average MCAT of 27, or a shcool where you have 130 classmates with an average MCAT of 32? Tuition appears almost identical.

I think you know what to do 🙂

Yea but NYCOM is 20 min from my house, that would mean a LOT less debt... before I interviewed at NYCOM I would have said Albany in a heartbeat but now I'm actually a little torn.

First of all - congrats to all of you getting in off the alternate list!

Quick question - were you guys originally on the alternate list or were you recently moved from under consideration to the alternate list? I'm still unclear as to whether or not the alternate list is ranked, and if those of us who were just recently moved from UC to alternate have a lesser chance of getting in.

Thanks!

I got the email just last week about being selected from UC to being placed on the alternate list. I think being moved to the alternate list greatly increases your chances of acceptance.

I concur...I was placed on the alternate list last week...so its looking good for AL status people 🙂

Congratulations to all those accepted this time around. Hang in there everyone else who has to wait for the next round!

Just rejected via email.
Interviewed Sept 9
UC Status email Nov 19
3.6, 30

Good luck to all those still waiting! And congrats to those accepted!!!

Do they tell you your financial aid?

After I signed the acceptance and paid the deposit, I got an email from the finaid office. They had an online form to fill out, then I had to fill out some promissory notes and loan counseling at the studentloans.gov website. About a week later I got the award letter.

For those that got accepted off the wait list, did you send a letter or anything to them? I know Albany is very open about not really caring about that stuff, but I can't get rid of my urge to do something.

I didn't get off the waitlist yet, but I wouldn't do it as they explicitly told my interview group that they would accept no updates. It might actually hurt your chances if you do send a letter after they told you not to.
