2013-2014 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Withdrew my acceptance yesterday. Good luck!

For those that got accepted off the wait list, did you send a letter or anything to them? I know Albany is very open about not really caring about that stuff, but I can't get rid of my urge to do something.
I got off the alternate list earlier this week and I did not send them anything. They do not like updates, so I don't think it would improve your chances to send letters.

Facebook group has increased from 60ish to 97 over the past few days... Starting to lose hope that I will ever be pulled off of the AL (sigh...)

im being so paranoid about all this, how do we know if we are actually on the alternate list? all that confirms this is "your form has been successfully submitted" and it takes us back to another form. should i call and make sure?

And there it is in black and white....

The acceptance rate was 1.7% for the most recent class to matriculate at Albany School of Medicine.

If they want to address the alleged doctor shortage, spots in US Medical Schools need to be increased dramatically. Not sure what they're waiting for.

Around 40-45% of people applying to MD programs end up with at least one acceptance.

Besides, the problem isn't acceptance to med school - it's residency spots. That's where the bottleneck is. It would be irresponsible of MD programs to dramatically increase matriculants knowing that the number of residency spots will remain static.

Where did you see that, anyway?

You're right of course that my frustration simplified the matter too much. The current residency match program is facing many challenges with funding for training positions. However my understanding is that for residencies such as family medicine, primary care, and pediatrics the match percentage is still quite high. It is also interesting to note the relatively large number of international medical school graduates still securing US residency placements. Clearly it is a complicated situation that needs to be addressed, revised, and improved at all levels. Easier said than done, obviously.

Here is the link for the AMC acceptance rate: http://medical-schools.findthebest.com/l/102/Albany-Medical-College
However also, I know someone who just finished their first year at Albany med. At the white coat ceremony the incoming class was told that the acceptance rate was closer to 1%, as approximately 40 students from each class (of about 140) come directly from the Combined Degree programs at local universities.

Just received an acceptance via email (my one and only)!

My stats:
Undergrad (2008) Science GPA: 3.3, Overall 3.39
Graduate GPA (MPH 2013): Overall 3.85
MCAT: 31R
Six years of patient-care/clinical work experience at Medical Center (anesthesia tech)

Anything is possible! Don't lose hope 🙂

I'm guessing they will send out acceptances every Monday until they fill the class. They give each person 3 days to respond so this strategy makes a lot of sense

Congrats, mind sharing stats? I'd like to get a rough estimate of where I rank on the list.
Not sure if stats alone are going to be indicative of your standing. Seems that Albany values applicants as a whole rather than just with stats (at least more so than the average school is the impression I have gotten). Who knows though

Indeed, hence it will be a rough estimate at best, but better than nothing.
(PS, I'm just freaking out over the wait.)

Hi guys.

I have been a long time viewer of SDN but this is actually my first time posting. I feel the need to share the information since this thread has been relatively helpful to me as well.

I got into albany yesterday.
Stats 32 mcat 3.6 GPA cumulative 3.55 science.
Interviewed November 20th, UC in December, AL in June.

I called the admissions office last week and they said that the alternate list is composed of about 400 candidates as opposed to the 250 candidates that were on last year's alternate list. Last year they offered an acceptance to around 80 of the alternate list students.

Just some stats for you guys.

Wow 400 candidates... thanks a bunch for the info but jeez thats brutal and definitely demoralizing

Congrats! and thanks for the info. It's a bit demoralizing to hear that there's 400 of us on the list, but it is nice to know someone with similar stats to mine has got in😀

I called and they confirmed the 400 statistic with last year 80 people getting in. With such a large wait list it would be nice if they could give us an idea as to which third or fourth of the list we are in. Did anyone else have success squeezing out any other information?

Has everyone already been notified of AL status? I noticed last year AL invites were sent out in waves.

Being granted AL status gave me a bit of hope initially, but now knowing how large the list is..... :/

Per admissions website's FAQ: When do classes start? For admission in 2013, orientation and registration (both mandatory) were August 6 & August 7. Thursday, August 9 was the first day of classes. Dates for orientation and registration (both mandatory) in 2014 are tentatively scheduled for August 4 , August 5, and August 6. Thursday, August 7 is, tentatively, the first day of classes.

I was recently accepted and emailed the admissions office because I was unable to locate an academic calendar. She told me orientation is Aug 4-6, first day of classes are the 11th. Hope that helps.

I need some serious help.
I was accepted to Albany 6 days ago and didn't see the email -- it was in my spam folder.
WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?
I need this acceptance. anyone have any insight? I will obviously be calling first thing in the morning.

For those that are currently planning to matriculate...how long did it take to receive word back from Fin Aid?

I got an email from the financial aid office the day after my acceptance.

right...I filled out the FAFSA and the AMC fin aid form...received a confirmation email a few days after...but still waiting to hear in terms of financial aide award/loans.

I filled out all the info and promissory notes around May 22/23. I got some emails confirming receipt of documents June 3. I also called them on May 28 or 29 just to verify and they were happy to pull the file and make sure I was complete. The award letter came through May 30.

I had submitted the FAFSA to AMC back in March when I got the II.

Oh okay ...thanks! I only recently submitted my forms ...so it may still take a while I am assuming. I may end up calling the office if I feel like I should.

I think it's a little under 40% per 2012 data

Did anyone have trouble getting added to the facebook group? I haven't been approved yet and it's been a few days.

Do they only update applicants on Monday?

Also has it been confirmed that the UC list has been dropped to 200? No one on SDN, came out saying they were rejected when that supposedly happened right?
