2013-2014 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And for those who are curious, I see interview dates available on: 1/15, 1/30/, 2/6, 2/7, and 2/11

Interview in a couple weeks, any useful tips/information? How is the interview process? What are some thoughts about Albany compared to surrounding schools or areas? THANKS!

man my application status just says complete and ready for review ugh so frustrating. It hasnt changed , I was verified last week of august and submitted my secondary first week of september. Blaahhhhhh Albany can you show a Latino some love?

Yeah, it's potentially a long waiting process, especially since they don't update anything on the status page after that (i.e., no "under review" or "reviewed" or anything else)!

The waiting sucks. Good luck!

Just spoke to admissions, and for those wondering, decisions for those who have interviewed will be sent out "around the second week of November". This is for (apparently) all students who interviewed before that time.

Hope this helps, and best of luck to everyone.:luck:👍

That's a little annoying. I wish schools would be a bit more timely in their decisions.

I hope so man. Why did you withdraw? I hope you got into a school of top choice man!

Well, it's November! The month where we get to start hearing back about interview decisions... 😕

Does anyone have any idea the rough percentage of people who are outright accepted/under further consideration/rejected? Probably not, but I just though I'd ask...

So should we expect decisions in roughly a week? Also, does anyone know whether interviewing early here improves what appears to be a pretty crappy post-interview acceptance rate?

I absolutely loved AMC when I interviewed here, but the chances of gaining admission seem pretty low.

Yeah, within a week or two is what it sounds like? I know they kept pushing it back and back and back last year, but that's probably because they were just starting the MMI. I hope early interviews count for something!!

I think Endure is talking about the fact that they will ultimately interview ~1,100 people for ~100 spots this year. Historic acceptance has been ~300 people, and traditional interviews used to be done with only ~600 people. So the post-interview acceptance rate has gone from somewhere around 50% to somewhere around 27%.

Basically, a near-doubling of interview spots has likely cut acceptance rates in half.

On my way to Albany today for an interview tomorrow! Any last second pieces of advice?

Your MMI might start first thing in the morning (lol didn't know that until I showed up to my interview). Some people in your group will do it as soon as ya'll arrive, the others will do it later in the day. So mentally prepare yourself to do an MMI at 8:30 am!

Wow... Why are they interviewing that many more people this year?

Well my application response form says check in is at 11:30. Did some people interview early in the day and others later in day?

Because they switched to MMI, which allows them to be more efficient with interviews.
Is their interview day consisted of only MMI or are there individual traditional interviews as well??

Would you say that anyone who received an interview invite here has a chance of acceptance?

The day consisted of MMI. There were no individual traditional interviews. If you interview here you have a chance, but it seems as if this school doesn't have a very good post-acceptance rate compared to most other schools.

Ah yeah, your start time will depend on the day you interview. It might still help to keep in mind that your MMI might be the first thing you do, though. Took me a little off guard at least.

Interview invite last week on 10/29. Out of state. Complete mid-August.

II! OOS and submitted my secondary on 8/5. There was one date in Nov, one in Jan and the rest in Feb. Took a Feb date to avoid missing class! 🙂

Is this for the interview invite? I don't recall having to upload a photo when I submitted my secondary? :-ss

Feeling more and more like it was a stupid idea to apply to Albany and NYMC so late in the year (early sept.) since Feb. is already filling up...

I had to download firefox JUST to upload the pic, FYI.... hahahhah

Don't want to raise an alarm, buuutt I just found an interview invite in my spam folder!!

Complete Early October. OOS.

EESH! I'll take my chances.

So even though it is just MMI and no traditional interview, should we still be prepared to discuss our interests in Albany and medicine in general? For those who have already interviewed here, how would you recommend preparing for the interview day here?

Thanks!

I would say there's not much you can do/need to do for the MMI. However, I found that there was an awful lot of time on tours and such... so, though the tour guides have no say in the admissions process, having some good questions is a great way to get real feedback on the school. Think about what your interests are in Albany and you'll have plenty of time to discuss and get honest feedback.

Is Albany anyones first choice? I don't see the passion that I do in other school threads. I have an interview coming up in a couple weeks and might withdraw. I was wondering everyones thoughts about the school. Can anyone tell me all the pros? Would anyone choose Albany above any other schools. Where does it rank in your list if accepted here and other schools?

The take away message from my interview day was that Albany was no one's first choice and they're there because it was the only option they had. Everyone kept saying, at the end of the day, you're going to be a doctor (which is true, but they were using this as a pro). One MS2 mentioned he had to apply 3 cycles to get into school, one MS1 said once, and another MS1 said a whopping 7 cycles before he got into Albany. Some pros that the students stressed were that there was a strong sense of camaraderie and that their medical cases were pretty diverse.

Prior to the interview, I was relatively excited for Albany. On a scale of 1-4, 4 being a top choice, Albany fell on 2 before I went to visit. It now falls on 1. Of the 6 interviews I've been on, I was least impressed with Albany.

Maybe someone would shed light on a positive experience here?

Echo literally all of this. My exact experience was that nobody seemed to pick it over elsewhere. If you've had several difficult cycles trying to go MD or if you're a very borderline applicant, put AMC on your list.

II yesterday. I didn't know much about the school, and with the cycle so far along, I may just cancel the interview. I hope one of you guys gets my spot 🙂

Anyone here actually excited about Albany? Just got an interview invite

I am really excited about the possibility of attending AMC. I enjoyed my interview day a few weeks back and am awaiting an admissions decision. I really loved the collaborative atmosphere amongst the students, with the highlight of that being "Teach to Learn, Learn to Teach" in the anatomy lab. AMC's location as the top regional medical center (Level 1 Trauma) allows such diverse cases. Moreover, its close to Montreal, Boston, and NYC. The curriculum is theme based so everything is integrated as opposed to detached. Albany's second year exams are designed with old USMLE questions which is great preparation for Step 1. Albany's reputation is solid and it has a rich history - Sir William Osler. Students match at prestigious residencies. The faculty, from what I gather, are invested in students' success. I have nothing but positive things to say about this school.

I really liked Albany when I went on my interview. The structure of course work fits my learning style well and I liked that the students I talked to felt there was a strong sense of community within the medical school. If anyone wants more specifics about it, private message me.

Also, don't forget that this is a very personal decision. It's very hard to know what you'll think of a school without visiting, so don't rely too much on other people's impressions.

I liked Albany when I interviewed there. It is true that the students I met weren't the most enthusiastic and a couple openly admitted that it was their only acceptance, but none of the students I saw appeared unhappy to be there. Keep in mind that a lot of pre-meds will have no choice as to where to go, and even those that get in will often only have one acceptance. I didn't see it as a negative, just that it's the reality of a very competitive application process.

I liked Albany. Though I also found that most students were very candid about how it wasn't exactly their first choice (or, in some cases, how it was their only choice), I enjoyed the interview and was pretty impressed with the medical center in general. Though the facilities could definitely use a facelift, students were really nice, relatable, and happy with their education. While Albany might not be the newest, fanciest, biggest, or best school out there, it's definitely still an appealing place 👍 (at least to me!).

Pretty much this.

I don't know about that. I've interviewed at quite a few schools (Georgetown, Temple, and Cooper stand out in particular) where they acknowledged that 85-90+% of their interview candidates are accepted to other medical schools.
