2013-2014 Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Application Thread

Rejected also. This was my final school I was waiting to hear back from. I really can't complain and am very fortunate to have gotten into a bunch of schools, some of which I'm really excited about going to, but I can't help but be just a bit perturbed by the fact that not a single "top" (aka US News top 20) even gave me an interview. It just makes me feel like I never really had a chance and they just took my money and ran. Anybody else feel the same way? Really don't mean to come off as a complainer, just something that's been bothering me....

I understand @cyberchicken001 Although I was fortunate enough to get an interview at one top 10 school, all my other interviews have been from schools ranked #30 or lower. It's a really weird phenomenon that I can't explain. Idk what to make of it. Maybe the one top 10 was just a fluke. And coming into this cycle I thought it would go a lot differently, but everything happens for a reason. I've had to stop comparing myself to all my friends (which is a good thing).

The whole thing is a huge gamble man. I'm waiting on a decision from an Ivy in March but I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm very happy to have been accepted to my state school and that I'm going to be a doctor without having to go DO or to the Caribbean, in the end that's all that matters. Out of 45,000 people applying, we made it 🙂

On the flip side, coming into this cycle I thought I might not get into any MD school and DO would be my only option. Let's all be grateful 🙂

You've been accepted to incredible schools and have interviewed at the best of the best. According to your MDApps your MCAT is 28< x >31 and your sGPA is 3.0< x >3.3. Applicants with your stats rarely get into any MD school, and struggle to even get into DO. Congrats!

True I guess, but they don't have my life😉

Regardless it's good to keep perspective. I'm grateful for what I do have. And thanks!

Man, I think everyone who had a disappointing run feels that way. I'm especially irked by Sinai because they refused to transfer my app from MD/PhD to MD consideration back in December, and now they have the nerve to send me a rejection saying "We carefully reviewed your application..." No you didn't! You literally didn't look at it!

I know I can't blame the school for their admissions policies, it's just a mental defense mechanism so I don't end up blaming myself. If I knew my cycle would have turned out this way, I'm not sure I would have tried so hard in undergrad.

I totally understand.. I just hope all those hungry interviewees enjoyed the lunch I sponsored lol 😉

I empathize with the disappointment. I was fortunate enough to be interviewed at one of the top 20, but have largely been ignored or rejected by the others. Among those schools, you either have to have super stellar numbers and accomplishments or be part of group that they're specifically targeting.

I was rejected pre-interview by Sinai today and it was my top choice going into this cycle. I was also recently wait-listed at NYU, which had been my number 2. But I'm not sad. This has been an incredible cycle and I've been lucky to have many options available to me, which cannot be said of a lot of people on here.

Our choices may be limited now going into med school, but at least once we are doctors we will have nearly unlimited options on where we can practice!

Rejected this morning pre-interview. I'm a reapplicant who interviewed here 2 years ago and substantially improved my app. 😕

I still haven't heard anything...but I assume I've been rejected as well.

Oh god.

I've been waking up with a start at ~5am-ish recently, checking my email to see if I got a late-night rejection/acceptance/waitlist from this school. I had a January interview date and was told that we would hear back "mid-February" (which, to me, is defined as 1-9 = early Feb, 10-19 = mid-Feb, and 20-28 = late Feb).

Slowly dying...

Room in your casket for another? I'm back to forwarding my emails to my friends because I die a little whenever I check.

I have some sad news. Many of us were waiting for sinai, however a friend that interviewed there last week told mr he had interviewed during their very last week of interviews and that admissions decisons will be out in 1 to 2 weeks. Heres to my rejection!

Does anyone else think we're going to hear back today? I'm refreshing this and my email like it's my job

I fell in love with the place when I interviewed. I have been praying to multiple religions to get in.
I just think Sinai had such an unfound combination of student support and happiness, intellectual opportunity,
experience with a diverse population. Both my interviewers were legitimately kind and supportive.
I really just hope for a waitlist at this point, I will take what I can get.

Just called. They said that they haven't made decisions for anyone who interviewed Jan23rd and on... The woman I spoke to also said that she couldn't give me a timeline for when decisions would be made--could be this week could be next. I was told middle of February but it looks like that's not the case...

Just got the email that I was placed on the alternate list. 🙁

Winterchill- I feel you there. Was also placed on the Alternate List but I'm declining my spot.

Best of Luck Everybody!

+1. Not too upset. There were a couple reasons why I felt that Icahn wasn't a good fit for me. Best of luck to everyone still waiting for news.

Waitlisted just now. I loved it when I was there, and didn't want to leave. Fingers crossed.

Alternate list here as well. I wonder if there's much movement on their waitlist..?

Alternate. Not sure yet if I'm going to hold out for it or not.

I hear you ifeay. I'm considering staying near home for med school though so I'll stay on the waitlist until I hear back from the other NY school. If that's a bust also, I'm out. 🙂

Is alternate list the same as a waitlist?

Yup, exact same thing.

Just got an email that I'm on the Alternate list as well. Kinda bummed but am glad to still have a little hope. I would still love to go here but I don't know how much movement there usually is on their waitlist.

Get it Handstand!!! I was starting to think that they just put all of the most recent interviewees on the alternate list as a sort of safety measure. Glad to see that someone got in!

Interviewed 2/6 and was put on the alternate list as well :/

Does everyone who interviews get put on there?

I interviewed back in October, was put in the "continued review pile" and just got a waitlist email, which I guess is better than a rejection and gives me some hope...but still, Mt Sinai is my top choice so it's a bit disappointing. :/ Congrats to everyone who was accepted though!

Also got put on the wait list today from the "deferred" list. I'm holding out until the first day of classes! Lol

Alternate list today as well. Did anyone else receive a background check email from Certiphi today? I was under the impression that they only sent those for acceptances..I'm still waiting to hear from another school post-interview so I'm not sure which school that email was regarding..

Maybe you're getting into that other school. I got one of those emails a few months ago but it wasn't necessarily pre-my first acceptance.

Alternate list today. Interviewed back in November and put on hold. Don't know if I'm staying on the list though. Loved the school, don't know if I'm a NYC girl though.
