2013-2014 Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey all, first post on sdn and I wanted to share some information for future applicants. I was put on the "deferred" list after my interview in November and was accepted today. I sent in an LOI in January. People do get into Sinai after receiving the "continued review" status without being put on the waitlist. Best of luck to everyone on the waitlist and congrats to those accepted!

Congrats! That's nice to hear. I also sent an LOI/update in January as well after being deferred in November and was wait listed earlier this week 🙁 who knows though, maybe that letter got me on the waitlist instead of being rejected lol.

Has anyone actually been outright rejected yet? (post II)

I was just accepted in the last round -- does anyone else who was accepted recently know if you need to email them or do anything to hold your spot? The email said you only needed to respond if you are declining the offer.. but it feels weird to not have to accept the offer...

Does anyone here know anything about merit-based scholarships at Icahn? When do they usually hand those out?

can previously accepted people tell me what the acceptance packet contains? so anxious for it to arrive!

It has a letter of admission, a brochure and info sheet about the Global Health program, and paperwork for the drug test to be done through Quest Diagnostics.

To people who wrote LOI, did you get any confirmation that they got the letter?

Has anyone actually been rejected? Looking back through this page, it seems that people who interviewed have either been alternate listed or accepted .. that would toss a wrench into your predictions.

Yes, at least 1 person has reported being rejected after the interview. There is definitely reporting bias so others probably don't write that they were rejected.

Hi all, I had to turn down a PORTAL offer today. This means a spot will be opening up for someone. PORTAL seemed great, I would have loved the program! Good luck!

Hey guys, question for you all. I'm on the alternate list at sinai. I found the alternate list email to be very encouraging. I was wondering if everyone receives the same alternate list email? Or are there a few different emails that go out based on how high you are on the list?

My email said:
We are writing to inform you that you have been placed on the Alternate list for the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai's class entering August 2014.

We are very impressed with your application and your accomplishments. While we are not yet prepared to offer you an acceptance at this time, your application is still being considered by our committee. Please know that your application is important to us and that we appreciate your patience as we continue our review process.

As you weigh your options for next year, we encourage you to review our Dean's Reportwhich provides greater insight into the innovative and creative programmatic developments occurring every day at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Please feel free to send updates to your file to[email protected] and do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further assistance.

I got that letter too!

So probably sent to everyone? I find it a much more encouraging letter than other waitlist letters I've received

Maybe! But I guess we can't be too sure with such a small sample size.

You're right- it was definitely the nicest waitlist letter I've received as well.

+1 got the same.

Definitely the nicest one I've gotten too, maybe along with Columbia's as well.

Oh I didn't apply there haha, what did it say?

"Your application for admission to our 2014 First Year Class has been carefully evaluated by the members of our Committee on Admissions who determined that you are well qualified for the study of medicine."

"I hope that you will remain under consideration because I believe you would thrive here."

"With warm personal regards,

Sincerely,"

Certainly removed the sting from yet another waitlist ha.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm sorry to hear that, but seeing as you have a fair number of very good acceptances, you don't really need my condolences. 😉

Hi all,
Long time lurker here. Is anyone going to revisit weekend? The dress code is business casual for both days right?

So, I just got an email inviting me to second look even though I'm on the alternate list. Apparently, they invite a few waitlisted people to second look every year. Is this a good sign about my chances of getting of the list? Also, if I don't go, (which I may not be able to because I may not be able to afford the time off from work) does it make me look disinterested? If I don't end up going, I was planning to email admissions and letting them know that even though I can't go, I am still very interested in the the school. Thoughts?

Same. I went ahead and checked last year's thread and it didn't seem to be terribly indicative (e.g. someone got off the waitlist w/o receiving this, someone who attended and showed continued interest did not). Since it's fairly short notice I don't see how they could hold it against us if we can't make it! I'm sure sending that follow-up e-mail could only help and i'm leaning towards doing a similar thing myself.

I just withdrew my acceptance from MT S. Good luck everyone!

Anyone ever heard of admissions sending personal emails to pre-med advisors in regards to a specific applicant?

I'm trying to contact the financial aid office and I received an automatic reply saying that the office is closed due to constructions until May. 16th. Anyone, have any idea what to do? I wanted to make my decision this weekend and need to clarify one or two things about the award letter. I can't believe they would shut up shop before the deadline like this.
